About
Sail In Asia is International Yacht Training (IYT)'s premier sailing school in Asia and is located in the beautiful and unspoilt Ao Yon Bay. We specialise in recreational sailing courses, with our 14-day Zero-to-Hero course by far our most popular which covers 4 internationally recognised certifications and enables graduates to charter in most countries. We offer many shorter courses that cater for all. Many of our students continue with their sailing career across the globe after learning with us! Our fleet means we take people on trips to islands with a choice from our trimaran (6-8 passengers; good for families), our 36ft racing yachts (5-7; good for adults), or our 26ft sports yachts (2-4; good fun). Send us an email or come and chat to us to find out which is best for you! As the only IYT school in Asia able to train instructors you can rely on us to provide you with excellent skippers who can do it all or teach you as you sail around our beautiful islands. Check out our website.

My friend and I came from Bali to Phuket for the 14-days „Zero to Hero“ course. We had a great time and a lot of fun and good sailing days during the whole course! Mike and his Team are all really nice, super professional and know what they are doing! Our sailing instructors Dave and Dan are excellent sailors and could transfer their knowledge in a very comfortable and fun way! Dan was our main Instructor and his Theoretical sailing classes were excellent and methodically well delivered!
All administrative topics were handled perfectly by Jun, she helped us as well to get a very good deal at the Bandara Resort Hotel close by where we stayed during the course.
Mike and Dan us also a lot of good tips for sailing around Phuket since we chartered right after the course a Sailboat for a week to „Test“ our new skills!
I‘m super happy with my experience at Sail in Asia and will come definitely back for the next course „Offshore Skipper“ once I collected enough NM in my Sailing Logbook!
Thanks again Mike & Team for this great experience and keep up the good work…, I‘m looking forward to see you all (hopefully) soon again!!!

I have recently completed the Zero to Hero course, without any previous experience or exposure to sailing. I can only say that it was a wonderful experience, that I would suggest to anyone interested in learning how to sail! I have met amazing people during this course, crewmates, instructors, managers, helpers! I have found not just a very professional school with extremely prepared and professional instructors that will always make you feel safe..but also a family like environment, I will always be happy to go visit again! I can only recommend this amazing school, where women even if outnumbered are not just extremely respected but also empowered! Thank you to each single one, and a special thank to JUM, Mike and Dan! Looking forward to meeting you all again one day!

I just finished the two week zero to hero sailing course. What can I say. The staff, boats, and location were amazing. We had a great group of 8 students, on two boats. The conditions are so good for learning. I would highly recommend this school if you want to learn to sail. I want to do it all over again.

We absolutely loved our Inshore Skipper Zero to Hero course with Sail in Asia.

The standard of professionalism is really high. We were taught by incredibly good sailors and more importantly, incredibly good teachers. We learned how to sail well and how to sail safely. Almost everyday we were in the water and there is so much to learn that even in light winds you are never bored.

We did a lot of research into different companies in South East Asia and into Europe, and this was by far the best reviewed and also if not the cheapest, incredibly close (even with the flights from Europe factored in!!). The value is so good, especially considering you get 14 full days of tuition.

The boats are maintained very well, and you sail on a variety of them, from monohulls to trimarans. From pretty much the get go you are sailing the boat, with the instructor clearly telling you what to do and why you're doing it. For the 14 day course do be prepared for classroom theory.

The location is great, perfect, clean sandy beaches with lots of cheap restaurants close by. It's in a quiet area of Phuket, but this is nice as after most days of sailing we wanted to chill locally. In saying that, a taxi and a short ride later you are in central Phuket with cool night markets. Many places close by also offer motorbike rental, money exchange, laundry, etc and supermarket right by the course location. The school can set you up with accomodation close by that massively beat booking.com in terms of rates.

I cannot recommend this course enough - it was simply amazing. Thank you to the whole team.

My girlfriend and I joined the 4 day Competent Crew course. We were well taken care of all through out and can confidentiality recommend the school.

We we're blessed with great instructors: John very gentle and patient in his approach which we needed and followed by David, a wealth of experience, literally being a sailing world champion!

I even ended up having the chance to partake in race event with the club which turned out to be a fantastic learning experience!

The area of Cape Panwa/Ao Yon itself is very cute and laid back – the ideal base for some down time and sailing adventures. We ultimately decided to extend our stay by a few weeks to head out sailing a few more times with SIA!

I've completed my Zero to Hero with Sail in Asia, that's awesome!! Good environment and helpful staffs! Mike and John (my instructor) are both very helpful, patient, experienced, knowledgeable and very friendly! Dan is great too, but I only see him on my VHF radio class. Jum also very helpful throughout my trip.! Highly recommend this sailing school!!

Sail in Asia Phuket,
Zero to Hero

Thanks to Mike, Dan, John, Jum, Sun, Noon and Cum plus anyone else i might of forgotten to mention by name.
For a fantastic 14-day intensive (it was intensive!) course.
I was in a brilliant group of 5 Wanna Be Skippers, which just made it even better we got on great as a team from day one.
The training took advantage of the weather conditions, using the mornings or afternoons of light winds to be in the classroom doing the theory and then straight out on to to one of the many training boats for some practical tuition when the wind picked up.
We started learning some of the practical skills on the smaller Platus, had a day on
the Trimaran and then onto Farr racing cruisers.
On the 13th day, we divided into two groups of 3 and did a day trip to Mai Thon Island with Dan (Dan is a great trainer ) helping on the boat of two and Cum on our boat who just let us get on with it, although always there in case of a problem.
One problem did occur trying to moor on to the anchor bouy at Mai Thon Island! No problem for Cum who sorted it out straight away.
A note about the theory: Mike is very progressive and is into using all available technology i.e apps Navionics
Windy etc. and got to check weather conditions every day and plot routs. This I found positive as this is obviously, the way forward. We did how ever do quite a lot of traditional chart passage planning work as well, Dead Reckoning / Estimated
positioning calculations using Almanacs / Diamond Tidal tables etc.
You might ask what happened to 14,,,,,no wind, in a couple of days it should pick up again another day trip is on the cards,
So, remember allow a few extra days on the end of your trip to Ao Yon Bay...happy sailing and good winds.
Completed day 14 ,,,another great day with a sail to Ko Lon, just the four now Day Skippers, with no additional help from a trainer or anyone else...we made it there for lunch and back in time for a few late afternoon beers !
Would I recommend the Zero to Hero ? YES,
AN INTENSIVE FUN PACKED ADVENTURE.

I really enjoyed my experience with Sail in Asia sailing school. I not only successfully completed my bare boat captain licence, but more importantly the entire experience has been nothing short of amazing. Shout out to Adam and Mike, my instructors, who have made this experience possible.

I had a great experience at SIA at Ao Yon Bay. Lots of practical sailing time coupled with focussed classroom learning. Mike, Dan and Dom made sure that everyone was comfortable and understood the syllabus. I consider myself very lucky to have coursemates who were extremely supportive- this course is really about having fun while learning.
Jum went out of her way to help us as well, helping us to buy stuff for our boat, hire motorbike for our errands and giving advice about visa renewals, etc.
Special thanks to Dan for the trouble he went through to bring us on a dive trip after the course. We had a great time even though the rough seas prevented us from diving in the good sites.
Special thanks also to the support team who daily helped us to drag our dinghy up the beach! Especially to Zhan who helped us to climb our mast to drop a line for our broken lazy jack lines.
You really can't go wrong with SIA- I can't recommend this school enough.

Spent two amazing weeks in Ao Yon Bay to get my IYT Skipper license. I was very pleased with Mike and his team at Sail in Asia. The setting is fantastic, a great place to learn how to sail or even just spend the day.
