To reach the Boca do Inferno view its necessary to walk on a trail. Bring your trainers and comfy clothes. Its totally worth it (and its windy)

If you have to do one view on this trip (and you should do as many as possible - the island is beautiful!) then it's this one.

A tip if you're doing this and the other nearby attractions (the view point to the west, Miradouro da Vista do Rei, and also the Sete Cidades town by the lake) on foot if you are being dropped off by a taxi - there are no hiking routes north or east round the lake from this point (from what we could tell) so you need to walk along the road going west. You can walk by the side of the road in the first half, then the rest is on the road itself - it's wide enough to walk along and we found the road to be fairly quiet, but of course, be cautious all the same.

There are great views along the way but consider a tour or going by car if you are expecting a dedicated trail between these two viewpoints!

Great view over the craters and lagoons. Excellent view point setting, easy to park and spend a little time to enjoy the surroundings. You have to hike a little bit to get here, but it's absolutely worth the effort!

Go in the morning for best photographs and to get ahead of most visitors (sun at back). If you can't walk very far or are short of time, don't park in the parking lot by the main road. If the gate is open, drive in and follow the dirt road that everyone is hiking along to the very base of the ridge where the trail goes uphill to the actual "miradouro"/viewpoint. There is room for several cars there. The view is amazing. If you have bad knees, bring trekking poles. It's about 5 minutes uphill to the viewpoint, depending on your uphill capability.

The view from the viewpoint is spectacular. The trail is very easy to navigate, and well worth the leisurely hike to the viewpoint. In fact, there are several other outstanding sights to see within a relatively short drive.

First of all, read the other reviews about how you can park closer to the start of the trail (down the brown dirt road).

Second, it you get there and it's a bit cloudy, stay awhile and hope the clouds pass. Or do what we did, drive down to Vista do Rei and when the skies begin to clear, go back to Boca do Inferno. It's really not that long of a hike to the viewpoint, if you park in the closer parking lot.

This viewpoint is the image that first got me interested in going to the Azores. It was surreal being there in person!

Make sure you plan enough days on Sao Miguel to get to see Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo on clear days or at least semi clear days. Going to this island and not seeing these places would mean that you missed out on the best sights.

We have seen pictures and videos of this place many times before and we thought: this is the demo version. But once we got there, the place was as incredible as expected!
From the main road, it takes about 45 mins to reach this spot and then you need to get back. The hike is trivial. The weather is changing very fast and from a perfectly nice weather you can get to no visibility within minutes. Second time we visited the place we could not see anything!

The Boca do Inferno viewpoint offers a fantastic view of the caldera lakes surrounding Sete Ciades. We went in late afternoon as part of a tour and there were a lot of other people hiking to the viewpoint. It wasn't overwhelming, but it was busy for Sao Miguel. We're used to it being quite quiet and chill in Sao Miguel.

Despite the other tourists, the views were well worth it. On a clear day, you can see the different colors of the lakes.

The hike from the parking lot was mostly flat with some uneven "steps".

I went there, out of the tourism peak and still the view point was full of people...the view point is AWESOME but try to go there very early on the morning so you can get all for yourself, the view the silence the tranquility will payoff those less sleep hours...you can go by car almost to the view point, but please don’t, you will ruin the walk for the people that goes walking from the road...always moving from the cars... :( very annoying. The walk is easy, you have only a small hill to climb at the end, other than that enjoy a good walk for the extraordinary forest...

We loved this hike (mostly flat, some hills and stairs) to an incredible viewpoint to see multiple sparkling lakes below. You can drive down the dirt road or park above. We were worried about getting stuck because it was raining. Must see this viewpoint during your stay!!
