Unique experience, the Castle is a must for its rise and its point of view. The steps to climb are impressive, the treasure trail for children is great as well as shields and swords. The booklet guide is very useful. Hang on tight and take the flashlight from your cell phones, the view is deserved.

Stunning views across a beautiful village. We had the place to ourselves as we navigated the many steep and winding steps. Going up was ok, coming down a little scary. You definitely need to heed the instructions to wear appropriate shoes.

An amazing architectural feat to have been built 1000 years ago. Enough information plaques around to give an understanding of how the original building might have looked. But where would the we'll have been, I'd love to have been informed.

we drove to and through this en route to Sarlat. We were a little jeg lagged and reallyl only stopped there to say good bye to our friend who had led us there. Stunning and very typical castle built right on a crag. We didn't go in. Looked like a typical French castle, which is to say one or two of these would be enough but it was really cool. There are just so many castles, cathedrals, bastides you can see but if you are driving through this area this is a worthwhile detour.

Chateau Gavaudun - fortress historic site and monument built on a rocky spur, towers over the village below and over the valley. In the middle ages Gavaudun valley was also the place where lepers got sent the "Lepers cave". There isn't a great deal to see inside the castle, fortress architecture, see the dungeon through the entrance carved in the rock.
There are breath-taking views down the valley from the top of the 70m-high keep.
There are audio and written guides and a small gift shop. Be careful there are a lot of steep narrow staircases cut into the stone to climb, but don't let that you put off.

This chateau-fort is a great place to visit with children, but probably not too young. My grandsons of 6 really enjoyed the excitement of it, but there are a lot of steep stone steps, not suitable for anyone who has problems with knees or hips! You are given good audio info with a torch, which is needed! Views are amazing once you reach the too.
I would not want to do this chateau in full summer as there was a lot of climbing. It was good to wander around the grounds afterwards and there was some sort of treasure hunt for the children
( in French) in the form of numbered scrolls.
Sadly the cafe at the bottom was closed.
It was a great success with the children and us adults! Reasonable entrance fees too. Children under 7 free

A very unusual site with the relatively small castle spectacularly built onto and into a natural rock. Climbs are very steep up very narrow stairs. The views from the top are fantastic. Interesting architectural features. Plenty of parking, nice picnic areas and a pretty little village make for a very nice half day trip. The €5 entry fee is well worth it.

There's not much left of what was once atop a 100 metre long crag of rock but what's there holds a fascination for anyone who enjoys ruined castles and the history of this part of France. A warning for anyone with a physical disability: this is a hard site to access and involves some serious climbing up very basic spiral steps hewn into the rock. It can be dangerous for the unfit. But if you're up to the climb you'll be rewarded with a genuine adventure and magnificent views from the top. Ask the person at the ticket office for a guide in English - there's a scholarly one available. If you make it to the top of the donjon (tower) you'll wonder how this place could ever have been captured.

Interesting, especially use of woods in paneling and tapestries hanging in some of the rooms. Open hours limited.

We took a visit here and we really enjoyed it. The audio gave the history in English for each stage. Be careful on the steps. The views over the valley below was lovely.
