The Jewel in the Frescobaldi Crown
Apr 2017 • Couples
15 minutes beyond Nipozzano, much higher in altitude and thus colder, you will find Castello Pomino. Away from the frenetic pace, heat and frustration of Florence, Pomino sits above the Sieve valley and close to Vallembroso, much visited by Grand Tourists. Castello Pomino is a fortified manor house surrounded by the estate vinyard where life is slow and, above all else, quiet. If you seek solitude and dark nights then this is the place for you, the only disturbances being the owls and the ghosts. For those seeking TV and radio, look elsewhere. For the macabre, Castello Pomino has its very own chapel complete with mummified and desiccated guest. For breakfast you can rely on the excellent Silvana, Miriam and Marie-Chiara; for dinner (absolutely essential and the best dinner in Toscana) request the private sitting cooked by Manila; she is delightful company and knows how to deliver the best in seasonal Tuscan cuisine. Away from Pomino, Ravenna is a two-hour drive over the hills (no traffic in April) to view the mosaics of the late Romano/Visigoth period; Castello Poppi is 30 minutes away (to the East); Borgo San Lorenzo is worth a trip (30 mins to the North) just to have lunch in Gli Artisti (good food, good wine, knowledgeable staff, reasonable lunchtime menu); if visiting Florence take the train from Pontessieve (20 minutes by car plus 30 minutes by train) or Rufina (15 minutes by car plus 40 minutes by train) to avoid the heartattack of driving in Florence. Once again we were escorted by the excellent Stefania, hospitality manager of Nipozzano, who was faultless throughout and adds to the warmth and charm of the Frescobaldis. To the Allied sailors, soldiers and airmen buried in the nearby cemetary in San Jacopo al Girone (30 minutes) we are eternally grateful for their sacrifice.
