The typical thatched-roof houses of Madeira are listed. The houses ready at the town hall offer craftsmanship filing. They consist of a room in which a board wall separates living and sleeping. The children slept in the attic, accessible from the outside by ladder. Because of fire danger, cooking took place on a fire pit outside. Still inhabited houses have annexes with kitchen and bathroom.

We were on a Levada tour to Ribeira Frio from Funchal, but there wasn't any bus in the middle of the day back to Funchal, so we went to Santana to see the amazing ”Casa Tipicas de Santana”. I liked the houses, but there were very few of them left in the centre of Santana. It was a very winding road back in the dark from Santana to Funchal. It took over 2 hours for a journey of about 40 kms.

We called into Santana as part of tour. Very interesting to see the history and culture of the old Madeiran way of life. A couple of the houses are set up as how they would have been lived in others are set up for tourists ie souvenir shops and off license

The so called "traditional" houses are rebuilt "attraction parc" stuff. Inside the triangular houses, overpriced souvenirs are sold.

Not historical, but for picture taking purposes only!

Santana is a small village with shabby joints, not interesting at all, feeding stop for tourist tours.

These are a bit weird. Tourist bumph suggests the village has many of these structures but apart from the "tourist village" few we could only see about 2 or three others. These in the picture are recreations with a concrete base. I suppose it gives you an idea of what they were like but unfortunately they are all businesses (tourist).
If you walk up the hill towards a large restaurant on the left (maybe 300m) there is one that reconstructs the living conditions.

The traditional houses found around the centre of Santana have been converted to tourist shops and do not have an authentic feel to them. Fortunately our guide took us to one just up the road opposite a large ‘tile’ for Santana where the owner allowed us to see inside the house as it used to be when lived in and also gave us a small glass of Madeira wine. A somewhat underwhelming experience overall.

Take a BUS no 56 from Teleferico terminus Funchal. to Santana.
Bus travels up past Monte into the clouds surrounding the peaks,Around hairpin bends ,through forest ,past national park.'
Journey time 2 hours.
Part of the route twists up through small villages in a valley, turns around and comes back. and repeats in next valley.
STUNNING scenery.
The "Typical Houses" are obviously there for tourism and are genuinely representative of houses of the past, which if you look carefully can still be seen up on a hill,in back gardens ,now used as sheds or have been modernised and extended (look closely)
Public Toilets (with cleaner in attendance) by main car park opposite houses. The wooden huts on square above car park look like they may be tourist kiosks but were all shut up.
There is a theme park here ,and a Karting track.
Took a 103 bus back ,which still winds up the valleys but then went back down long tunnels to Porto Santo and the Airport
Really enjoyed the scenery on the bus ride, and not expensive.

We visited these houses as part of an excellent ‘Madeira East Tour’ which I plan to review separately. Our tour guide explained that these have been built in the style of the typical houses once found all over the island. But they are fakes! Each incorporates a different retailer or small exhibition. A wine shop, flower shop, a souvenir shop etc. We were later taken to an actual Casa Tipica nearby which has been in the same family for over 250 years. This gave a much better insight into the lives of such families. Though they don’t still live in it, members of the family showed us round & explained how they used the spaces. The furnishing and photos recalled an earlier life. Seek it out if possible ( maybe ask your guide). No entry charge, but donations accepted.

Probably one of the landmarks of Madeira.
We were here in 2017 at the thatched roof houses and were a bit disappointed. Not by the houses themselves, they are pretty and cute, but by the fact that you think there is a small village with houses here. But no, there are only 5-6 houses there.
In the houses themselves, souvenirs and specialties from Madeira are sold.

The traditional houses of Madeira are pretty much one of the symbols of the island and this is the best place on the island to see them - so quirky! Recommend about 20 minutes to poke around the 4-5 houses clustered together. Theres an underground car park with maybe 50 spaces on the opposite of the road which is free, which is a real plus point as Santana itself can get quite busy with busloads of tours.

Saturday 19th June and we visited Santana, which is located on the north side of the Island.

It is famous for it's Casas Típicas de Santana, the traditional style of house. Which is built in stone with a steep triangle shaped thatched roof.

One of the town's attractions is a small gardens, alongside Santana City Hall, which exhibits examples of the enchanting houses.

One of the houses is a florist shop, with a colourful garden.

Nice to have a quick wander around, thought it was going to be a lot better than it actually was.

Have posted a picture of an actual house (green door and shutters) along with the touristic one from the gardens.

This was a stop off on an otherwise excellent day tour. There really is only about 20mins of anything to see and that is being generous - all the 5 houses (except one clearly privately owned and occupied, set back) are just set up to sell crafts and souvenirs from, and not even one of them is 'dressed' as a house may have been occupied. (A 6th one is in a restaurant front parking area). Added to which, the iconic buildings have been replicated elsewhere on the island, including in the Botanic Gardens. It is fine as a quick stop off on part of a day trip, but not worth making a special journey there to see the houses - there are a couple of cafe/restaurants and that is all really of interest to a 'tourist'.

I think I saw mainly coachloads of German tourists than I saw the actual houses. Crikey. Went at midday on the way back from another walk, and hit it at it's peak I think.
It *is* interesting to see, but man there's a lot of people. Would recommend going early or late if you want a moment of peace.
