Unexpectedly nice medieval small town. Small streets that lead to a nice square. Not very spectacular, but there are less beautiful towns in Italy. The modern part of the city is not worth a visit, but if you are in the area, have a drink or an ice cream on the small square.

We came here for a day, for a bit of a walk and to check out the old town. It was a friday, but the town pretty empty - only a handful visitors and mostly locals on the central piazza, enjoying some coffee.
We did park just across the river by the supermercato DPiu. A good option and only a short walk away.
The town itself is beautiful. Most sights and landmarks are easy to find, it's mostly all along the main street in the old town (Via Armani Ricci/Via Garibaldi). The Torre dei Seratti marks the south end and the Porta Parma the northern end of town. And of both sides the river Magra. Beautiful bridges crossing it on both sides of the town.
The old town is full of wonderful old buildings and the Piazza del Duomo marks the heart of the town with the Concattedrale di S.Maria Assunta and the Torre del Cacciaguerra. Here you will find most of the restaurants and Cafés. It's a nice spot to enjoy and drink, a bite and watch the world go by.
There's also a small park in the south, the Parco della torre with the river flowing on both sides. Nice spot for a picnic or so. From here you also can do some nice walks along the river (west of town).
And then of course is the Castello del Piagnaro. The big castle towering above the old town. Walk up there or take the elevator behind the Porta Parma.
There are also some specialty shops with nice products from Tuscany.
All in all a very pretty old town. Not too busy...we liked that. It's a nice place to spend a few hours in.

This area was an important center conquered by the romans in the second century before Christ.
Apua gave the name to the Alpes Apuane.
With the stone bridge, the churches and the ancients palaces it is a very nice city to visit or have a rest in one of several and good restaurants.

First time in Pontremoli, for business. Nice town, that I knew for being the birthplace of the mythological goalkeeper Enrico Albertosi, known as Ricky. Pinocchio is also involved but nothing to do with the goalie of Italy Germany 4 to 3 of 1970. City well connected to eastern Liguria by the Cisa motorway. Fresh in summer and therefore attractive.

Charming town and a river runs through it! Wonderful place for a stop, lunch, and a stroll. Right off the Autostrada. The locals are very friendly, even the Police! Put this one on the list,

Pontremoli, and Lunigiana as a whole, is largely unknown in the Uk and this is amazing and UK travellers should try to visit as it's a largely untravelled gem of peace and beauty

If you are travelling between Parma and La Spezia i recommend you a stop at this tiny village, the historical center is a gem of medieval art, charming and attractive with its churches and the magnificent castle.

Wednesdays and Saturdays there are two markets (one in the old town and the other in the newer part) which finish about 12.30pm Lovely place to wonder around, lots of places to eat, interesting things to see. The Castle, the ancient 'gate' entrances to the town, its medieval centre. In August there is the famous 4 day Medieval festival, really worth visiting. The old town is flanked by two rivers and the newer part is not so interesting - like all built after the 1960s, but has everything you need. If staying there you can get to Parma, Pisa, Bologna, Florence, Milan, Genova and the world heritage site of the Cinque Terra coastal villages by train. Surrounded by sweet chestnut forest covered mountains its ideal for walking, trekking, exploring natural waterfalls and swimming in the river.

Pontremoli is a somewhat ordinary town along the river valley towards Parma. The non autostrade main road is a picturesque winding route through the hills.

we went here by train arriving in the early afternoon. It was hot and quite deserted (very normal in Italian towns). The are a few sights to see but not many. Charming if you are in the neighbourhood but not undispensable

Muchas gracias.
