The place is gorgeous, but requires some physical effort. From the car park it's about 30 min going down (and then climbing up). Quite steep (no real path, more like a forest walk).

We went to the Altfinstermunz from Samnaun *Switzerland(. We took the 921 Bus and got down at Vinadi bus stop (in Austria actually). From Vinadi one has to walk for around 5 minutes to get to the nearest walkway that would take one down to the spot. The walkway itself is an interesting one, going down the valley under a dense cover of trees. Notice that Cars would be parked at the entrance to the walkway on the Autobahn.

Once you reach below, you will find the crystal blue waters, very noisy due to the strong currents and this old medieval toll plaza with a wooden bridge. Some other pathways and cycleways that lead to the wooden bridge as well. The wooden bridge and the toll plaza is interesting. There is a small museum as well. A restaurant (good for lunch) and small children play area with swings and other rides are there too.

The valley itself is too beautiful. Kids would typically love this place. One can also take up short hikes around this area.

Beautifully restored in an idyllic setting (when the sun shines!). A good audio guide and there is also a good restaurant. Definitely worth a visit. Note: Sturdy shoes are advisable. One of the sections requires going up a sloping passage within the rock and good shoes are wise. Similarly, as others have said, arriving from the Swiss side is the easiest. We came from Hochfinstermünz on the Austrian side which is a steep climb down and up again with NO barriers. Again, sturdy shoes essential here.
However, definitely worth a visit.

Historical point of interest. Good shape - recently been restaured. Nice place to walk after skiing or snowy day.

I just love this place. We arrived at 1pm to Hochfinstermunz and took the Shuttle-bus down to the Castle. Shuttle-bus driver is very friendly can speak excellent English. The audio-tour was amazing and really enjoyed the 15 min short-film inside the cave. I would really recommend this place to visit, as you can explore this place with your own speed. If you get hungry you can order something small (Frankfurter, potato-salad) to eat. There is also a playground for your children. We took the last shuttle back at 16.45.

Altfinstermuenz is a historical toll place, directly on the Inn river, at the border between Austria and Switzerland. It can be reached from both sides. Via Claudia Augusta used to pass here during the Roman period. The place was restored a few years ago. There is a beautiful bridge, a fortress and a restored church, and also a cafe.

Very charming castle, a nice video at vist end.
Chaser doesn't speak English, just German.
Avoid our mistake, who drove till the caste on a very bad path: there's a free shuttle taking there.
