Rented a car and took the short 30 minute drive to Montemor-o-Novo. The drive was easy and well worth it. The caste was awesome and a great hours walk. Great vistas of the surroundings and the town is quaint.

Unfortunately, much of Portugal's history is in ruins! This is one such case. The entire castle environs has history and, if properly restored, will be a great place to visit.

The castle ruins at Montemor-o-novo look far better from below in the town than from inside. While the walls look impressive there's little else standing inside the castle grounds apart from a chapel (entry is 1E, castle grounds are free) and a government administrative building....More

The town is quiet beautiful and the winding road to the ancient defense position is easy. Enjoyed very much the unrestored areas and the views down over the town and farmlands.

Worth the drive off the highway. Much closer to the highway exit than other castles. Quiet little castle with a gorgeous view of Evora

The beautiful town of Montemor-o-Novo sits below the large Castle of which remain the huge walls and some buildings. It's fun to photograph and to walk the perimeter with it's lovely view.
