La chiesa è meravigliosa risalente al 1200 ma per colpa delle amministrazioni locali è stata di fatto resa un rudere e abbandonata. Infatti il terremoto del 2009 l'ha praticamente resa pericolante e tutto è andato in malora. Per visitarla si devono chiedere le chiavi al bar adiacente, ma dovete fare attenzione perchè è decisamente pericoloso.

Come testimoniano i ruderi, faceva parte di un complesso abbaziale. Da notare le decorazioni del portale, la cripta e l'affresco nell'apside.

Chiesa medievale certamente annessa ad un convento/abbazia (monaci basiliani?) oramai inesistenti. Sorge su un'altura posta sulla sponda destra del fiume Mavone, ai piedi del Gran Sasso; ha tre navate, un'abside semicircolare rivolta ad est (particolare basilicale) ed una cripta. Si ha l'impressione comunque che tutto sia abbandonato nonostante le impalcature facciano pensare a dei lavori in corso. Per visitare l'interno basta chiedere la chiave all'annesso omonomo ristorante.

La Chiesa di San Giovanni al Mavone, risalente al XII secolo, sorge su una posizione rialzata quasi a fianco della strada provinciale. La Chiesa faceva parte di un complesso abbaziale del quale restano pochi ruderi sommersi dai rovi. Oggi si può ammirare solo la Chiesa, la cui facciata è caratterizzata da un bel portale romanico sormontato da un curioso archetto e dalla terminazione piana (la prima del genere in Abruzzo). L'interno a tre navate (chiedere la chiave al vicino ristorante) è tutto transennato a causa dei recenti terremoti. Particolare l'affresco dell'abside a forma di mandola.

Monumento storico,dimenticata dalle istituzioni.Grandissimo valore architettonico danneggiata dai tre terremoti incorsi fra il 2009 ed il 2016.Stato completamente d'abbandono,restaurata intorno agli anni 90' con poca prudenza e scarso interesse artistico.E' stata un'istituzione di bellezza e di arte nell'epoca post medioevale,nei nostri splendidi paesaggi,situati alle falde del Gran Sasso d'Italia.Oggi è impossibile da visitare perché pericolante,in più la scarsa manutenzione la colloca fra le erbacce alte anche un metro,fra i rifiuti dei posteggiatori e con il pericolo per i pellegrini di infortuni poiché i gradini risultano completamente sgretolati.

Vecchia chiesa romanica, pregevole per posizione e struttura. Il problema è che non fruisce di alcun intervento, nè a livello conservativo che restaurativo. Un vero peccato

In qualunque altro paese questa chiesa romanica sarebbe valorizzata; invece siamo in Italia e quindi la si trova chiusa, abbandonata, non sono visibili nemmeno i cartelli per raggiungerla, seppur si trovi sulla strada principale. Dai Abruzzo, hai tanti gioielli...valorizzali!
