About
There are almost 200 steps to the top of the Castle, where you can take in one of the best views in Jersey. As you explore the network of staircases, towers and secret rooms, you’ll discover hidden treasures and gruesome stories of castle life through specially commissioned artwork. In the turrets you’ll find the medieval ‘wheel of urine’, and in the cellars ‘the witches in hell’. High on the battlements with a view of the surrounding countryside and distant French coast, you’ll stand shoulder to shoulder with wooden soldiers who ‘guard’ the Castle from invasion. Don’t miss world-renowned artworks “The Queen” and “Equanimity” in the Medieval Great Hall, by artist Chris Levine and holographer Rob Munday, commissioned to commemorate celebrate Jersey’s relationship with the monarchy.

- Anne Wren19 contributionsFascinating - but lots of steps!!This is a fascinating place but there are an awful lot of steps!! 274 to the top and maybe another 100 in and out of the many rooms! Even though I have COPD I managed just by not rushing and it's well worth the effort. A really interesting history explained quite wellWe are delighted that you were able to manage the steps at the castle despite your health condition - well done for making it to the top and that it was well worth the effort to do so! - RhagnarSpennymoor, United Kingdom315 contributionsNot more steps???Fantastic castle in very good repair because the Germans used it and even added some lookout towers. However there are about 2 million steps to get to the top, but take your time because it's worth the effort. There are all sorts of nuiks and crannies to look into on the way up.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 12, 2023
- Michael CLondon, United Kingdom398 contributionsThis is a real castle - not to be missed. It is clear to see why this castle was built from its location which also provides extensive views. It is a real castle with encircling walls, defensive gate ways, hidden passages and accessible roof top and other battlements. There is a climb up from the harbour by a narrow stairway but it is well worth the effort. The is a small shop with coffee and snacks. Other options are available nearby. There is a choice of bus services from St Helier that give direct access to the castle entrance.Thank you for your feedback with regards to your visit to Mont Orgueil and that you enjoyed exploring our medieval castle as well as the the fabulous views over the island and to the coast of France. Thank you for highlighting that the castle is easily accessible by a very regular bus service too.Written January 11, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 26, 2023

We were greeted by Sir Walter Raleigh himself, who led us around the castle. He was entertaining and educational (didn’t get the actor’s name, but you were great). If we’d just wondered around on our own wouldn’t have got so much out of it, so if you go try to time it so Sir Walter is your guide. Great fun. Highly recommend.Thank you for leaving this review. - Kev DPoole, United Kingdom28 contributionsFascinatingI was spending a few days visiting the sights of Jersey and had several places lined up to visit. One I was most looking forward to was Mont Orgueil Castle. I walked there from St Helier on Wednesday 27th March and arrived around midday. There was a sign about tours but the next one wasn't for 2 or 3 hours. I was planning on heading to the zoo after the castle so thought I'd have a look around before then moving on. The place was so fascinating I never made it to the zoo! There were a lot of corridors, rooms and stairwells to explore so just when I thought I'd been everywhere there was another area I hadn't been to. Some places were locked due to the high winds causing safety concerns which was a shame but I still for to see most of the castle. With the amount there is to see and info plaques to read it's almost overwhelming how much has happened at the castle. After over an hour and a half exploring I tempted to hang around for the next tour. I enquired at the reception and they said the next tour would be conducted by Marlene at 2:30 so I had 45 minutes. I went to the cafe and soon Marlene arrived. It ended up just being the two of us and she was absolutely fantastic. As I'd already been round I knew some of the things she would explain which allowed us to chat about the events of the past and she provided a lot more insight into everything that had been going on. Although it was great going round and exploring when I arrived, to then go round with Marlene has made the visit to the castle the highlight of my time here on Jersey. I can't thank Marlene and the others at the castle for being so helpful and friendly and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the island.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 28, 2024

We learned a lot about the castle and Jersey, and had fun as well. Thank you from a fellow volunteer guide from the UK.Thank you for leaving this review from a 'fellow volunteer guide'. - Voyageur544165 contributionsVisit to the Old CastleVery nice exploration of this old castle in Jersey. Enjoyed looking around the various rooms which are open. Some have things inside to see, including animal sculptures/models and a king on a horse! Great views of France across the horizon (my 'phone even picked up the French mobile network temporarily at one point!). I visited with my 4for3 Jersey Heritage Pass which was great value and I would recommend it. I stayed in St Helier and took the public bus from Liberation Square station to Mont Orgueil - journey time was approx 35 mins and a really nice drive along the coast road, enabling me to see more of Jersey than I would have had I not ventured out of St Helier. The bus only costs £2.35 one-way anywhere on the Island by card payment (I believe there are bulk ticket purchases from Liberty Bus Co if you want to travel on them more).Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 12, 2024
- Gill OAscot, United Kingdom689 contributionsWell worth a visitWe had a guided tour with Roy (free) and he was very knowledgeable. Took about an hour but we covered the whole castle and so much history. A fascinating place with fabulous views over the bay. He left us lots to explore afterwards and we did take advantage! We parked on the road after the castle entrance and there was plenty of room. There is a tiny cafe here and we enjoyed a pre-tour cuppa in the sunshine. Would highly recommend, so much history!Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 20, 2024

There are 200 steps up to the top and then you can work your way down through all the rooms admiring the artwork and the history. A wonderful hologram of the late Queen and information about how it was created. Great views over Gorey and the beach.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 7, 2024

What a magnificent castle is...we spent most of the day at the castle and surrounding area..the view's from the top of the castle were stunning. We bought a weekly bus pass and the trip was so easy from St Helier we went back again ...and the evening sun there made it even more special.

The day we went to Gorey and up to the Castle was a very windy one, which made some of the exposed places really blustery! They have the one way system pretty well laid out, but there were too many dead end rooms which weren't clearly marked as such.
However, all the other elements of a museum/fort experience were there, with very clear descriptions of what things were, and how they had been altered over the years. There is a great deal of climbing and descending on stone steps, circular staircases, etc.
Definitely worth a visit.

Very impressive castle, lots of rooms to see although they could have put a few more relevant things in some of the rooms apart from pictures of the queen.
Great views from the roof top ramparts.
Will cost you £13.60 per adult to get in, which in my view was a bit expensive.
It is well maintained

I visited early in the morning before the crowds began to arrive, so enjoyed the experience more. The setting for the cable is stunning with great views over Gorey Bay and out to the French coastline. The castle is unfurnished with just a few exhibits inside. Some of the steps are very narrow and areas of the castle are dark, but this adds to the authentic atmosphere of the building. Worth a visit when you are in Jersey.

I hadn't been inside the case for many years and had forgotten how wonderful it is, full of history between England, France and Jersey and with stunning views over the bay and onto France. Otherwise known as Gorey Castle, there is so much to see and learn about how the castle was built, how the French tried to invade and were repelled on many occasions, stories about the Governor of Jersey Sir Walter Raleigh, how Charles II was welcomed by the people of Jersey plus much much more. You can even dress up in medieval clothing for the duration of your visit (COVID rules apply). In the summer there will be more things to do, such as watching falconry and there is a children's play area.

We visited on a breezy Saturday and really enjoyed exploring this castle. While the castle sits high up in the hill top, we had an enjoyable walk up, taking in the views, sculptures and displays at each level. The views over Gorey harbour and the coastline beyond are incredible. We could even see the French coast. There are some interesting displays in the keep at the top, including the hologram of the Queen and how this was put together. There is a small cafe and toilets too. We took the Liberty bus to the castle, from St Helier bus station, and found this a reliable and fun means of transport. There are some lovely shops and cafes in Gorey, to round off the visit here.

Mont Orgueil is in a fantastically dominant location and is a very photogenic castle. There is parking in the village and entry from either the harbour wall or the village.
The castle is incredibly well kept and well arranged - there's a real plethora of information boards, layout and exhibits. The Jersey Heritage group have taken a holistic approach so as well as the military history side topics covered included medicine, witchcraft, diplomacy, punishment and mythology amongst others. There was the option for a free guided tour but we didn't take it.
The staff were friendly staff and helpful. Entry cost was £13.50 and we were there nearly 3 hours so it was excellent value for money. There is a great adventure play area as well as plenty of picnic areas so you could happily spend a day here.
The onsite cafe had great staff and my cream tea was fantastic.
A superb visit and one of the best organised castles I have ever visited.

We arrived at Gorey and the castle on an exceptionally wet and windy morning - not quite the scene we had imagined. Nevertheless, we made our way up and were very welcomed by all. A small group of us stalwart tourists joined Jeffrey on the guided walk. He was so knowledgeable taking us smoothly from 1066 to the present day, pointing out all the architectural interests with such genuine affection for the castle we didn’t even notice the grey clouds lifting and the sun shining out. Fabulous views can be seen from the top, wonderful sculptures and art work are placed in and around and Jeffrey’s enthusiasm shines through. Well worth a visit - whatever the weather.

Not far at all. The castle is in Gorey. There is a footpath by the castle which takes you down to the harbour.

Hello,
I've just read your comment about Mont Orgueil in Jersey.
Was dressing up in the costumes included in the entrance price or did you have to pay extra?
Thank you for your help,
Pierre.

Hello,
We see costumes for kids (I don't know for adult). It's free to use in the castle.
I hope I've helped you.

Is it possible to get to the castle with a slight mobility problem
Written June 26, 2017
Yes you would be able to get to the castle and have some access walking on the main gravel paths and some uneven stone foot paths. The castle is on a hill and some of the paths are quite steep. Beyond the main paths it can be quite a maze of steps and walk ways which would be very challenging.
