- RossellaLondon, United Kingdom43 contributionsGreat experience! We booked the private tasting which was £30 each and included the guide only for us, the tasting of the classing rum and the aged ones, the entrance to the casks room where we also had the private tasting with a starter (cheese, ham, salame, bread and butter). Our guide Giovani was very professional and competent. He explain to us everything and answered to all the questions we had. He was so kind that even booked for us a table in a restaurant for my fiancé birthday. At the end of the tour you can also buy the rums. I recommend to buy from there as we saw higher prices in the islands and airport. I highly recommend to book the private tasting and to visit the Rhumerie.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 6, 2023

- SBellLondon, United Kingdom14 contributionsA must visit if staying in le morneThis place was excellent. We booked the private aged rum tasting. Very friendly/knowledgable guide, delicious rum. The tour itself was very reasonably priced given the quantity and quality of rum tasted. Make sure you stop by the restaurant for a couple of cocktails after, they were delicious.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 1, 2023
- xavengerWindermere, United Kingdom117 contributionsBeautiful location, great rum tasting - and a short tour of the distillery! We spent about 90 mins here today, went on the tour, tried several different rums and had a look round the shop. The tour of the distillery was fairly interesting, and the location is beautiful. Think we would have enjoyed it more going at a quieter time, the place was rammed with people, with group after group doing the tour. We still enjoyed it, learned something in the process and came back with a bottle of rum to take home!Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 30, 2023
- IS TEly, United Kingdom578 contributionsGreat visit to a charming small distilleryA lovely couple of hours spent at the site. Easy parking and the tour well worth the money and time from a very informative guide and good tasting session at the end. If you want to eat at the restaurant, would recommend booking in advance as busy with pre booked group trips. Thanks for a nice time.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 18, 2024

The staff's friendliness adds a special touch. The best part? The tasting at the end — an exquisite journey through Chamarel's finest rums. It's not just a visit; it's a sip of Mauritian spirit and charm. Highly recommended for a taste of paradise! 🌺🥃Visited October 2023Traveled on businessWritten March 7, 2024

My wife and I visited the Rhumerie de Chamarel because they did a rhum tasting at our hotel and it piqued our interest in visting their distillery.
The rhumerie is a surprisingly lovely building in a beautiful location close to several other worthwhile visitor attractions such as the Ebony Forest Reserve and the Black River Gorges National Park.
The rhumerie isn't very big so the conducted tour is quite brief but gives an interesting insight into how rhum is made. It also includes tastings of several different rhums. Unfortunately I was driving so I didn't participate but my wife enjoyed it😊. One minor criticism is that our guide spoke English with a very heavy local accent so I didn't understand everything he said.
The shop sells quite a large a variety of rhums and related products. We bought a bottle of 3 year aged rhum which cost 1500 rupees. This equates to about £36 which is quite expensive but it will be nice to enjoy a taste of Mauritius when we're back home in the UK.
We didn't have time to use the restaurant but other reviewers say it is very nice.

Chose any sunny day to visit this great place! The entrance fee is not too high and the ticket includes the tour inside (you can chose English or French language to be guided) and excellent rum tasting. Chamarel rhum is the best one in Mauritius so you must try it! After a small excursion which explains the way of preparing the most famous Mauritian rum you are guided to the bar to try 1 rum cocktail (already included in an entrance fee) and then - to rum tasting itself. After that some jams and local sugar delights are offered to you by the guide. The shop by the exit is expensive but nice so don’t pass by )

Having paid for a tour and tasting with a hard sell, we transferred to the Shop to buy gifts …. Challenged the female manager as over charged for the jams we purchased and showed her the signage they had with the price showing. With that she snatched the sign saying old stock and removed the sign. Wouldn’t look at us and treated us in a very aggressive manner. We then said, out of principle, we wanted our money back. Again in a loud aggressive voice, ‘you can’t return the goods’. Standing our ground, with other staff watching, we said you have over charged us and we do not want the goods and had not opened the goods or left the shop etc and we wanted to see her superior. She stormed off, again wouldn’t look at us, offered no apology and came back, opened till and threw the cash back on surface, couldn’t even put into our hands. We were absolutely dumbfounded how a visitor/customer/ tourist should be made to feel. Appalling service. DO NOT RECOMMEND A VISIT! However, if management see this Recommend some more training for this person who certainly doesn’t know how to close a sale.

As it turned out, the factory itself is only running between July and December, we were a bit disappointed at first but you can't leave with a heavy heart after the tasting. There are tours in English and French in every 20 minutes. They explained the process in around 15 min and at the end you can taste their regular rums and liquors, 9 of them. For and additional fee, you can taste the older, 3 years and up, rums as well.

People bring the value of this place down when writing reviews of "extensive" tasting as if someone is forcing them to drink it all. Yes, the rum samples are seriously largish, but if one can't master the tasting principal of not actually swallowing and restrain themself to free alcohol, than they will really be able to enjoy the whole experience and learn the different flavors, which by the way are of a good varieties. My favorite was the Coffee Flavored one, while the Vanilla wasn't much behind. Bothe the drive to Chamarel and the Rhumerie Farm were very charming with the different flowers & vegetation wild arrangement. On my visit we had some off and on summer rain, which totally cooled off the air and brought some spice to the experience. We were told that it always rains in the mountains, all year round. In the Rhumerie there is a very nice Restaurant as well, so if you have the time to relax and let the spinning in the head pass, before you continue the Mauritian Exploration.

While visiting Mauritius in June 2022 we hired a mini-bus and did our own version of the Southern Tour and the Rhumerie de Chamarel was one of the stops.
The distillery is beautiful with immaculately maintained gardens around the distillery buildings. The tour was basic and reasonably well presented and was followed by tastings of their entry level rum and several flavored rum's.
Their premium rum was particularity interesting to me and i purchased one of them to enjoy at home. The gift shop was great with some interesting purchases like Vanilla paste and nice jam.

Educational tour of the rhumerie and the guide explained very clearly the different stages to turn sugarcane into rhum. It was shorter than I expected but interesting. The best part is of course the tasting of 6 of their 'rhums arrangés' and 1 white and 1 dark rhum. For the higher quality rhums, you will have to pay extra by the glass. You should definitely try their 10-year anniversary rhum, a-ma-zing!
Their souvenir shop offers nice discounted price compared to what you would get in the local supermarkets or online.

The tour was a bit bland , the only mechanical item that was working during our tour was the guide who spoke almost robotic. None of the actual machines were in use so imagination was essential . The process was shown on tv screens which to be honest would be available on YouTube . The only part of the tour we felt was value for money was the actual tasting where the amount of rum tasted was good for the value of 400 rupee per person which is approx 10 euro per person . The website should mention that the machinery is only in use for part of the year . Over all a nice place however would be far better if the experience was more involved and not just visiting a dormant factory during part of the year .

We visited Rhumerie de Chamarel as part of a South West Island tours.
The place itself is lovely. Really nice gardens and buildings. It's enjoyable to be given a guide as to how the rum is made, and to see all the machinery.
Our tour included rum tasting and food. The food was of a really good standard in the restaurant, very pleasantly surprised. Although I'm not the biggest rum fan, I did enjoy the tasting, although I did prefer the rum cocktails :)

Is possible to find Chamarel rhum also in Mauritius’ airport or only in the rhumerie?
Written August 24, 2019
Chamarel is a local product, so you can find it in the alcohol beverage section of big stores and the airport duty free shop. But if you do have the time, then please visit the Rhumerie. You can combine it with a trip to the Chamarel waterfall if you like.
The ambience of the Rhumerie is good, they have a lovely garden there. There is opportunity to taste different products and choose the flavour of liquor you want, the proof (strength) of the Rum you like and so on. The guides who take you around are very helpful too. There is a small cafe and also a nice shop where you can buy both local alcoholic products and spices and coffee and some souvenirs. The whole experience would lake you 60 to 90 minutes, and the time would be well spent.

La rhumerie est elle ouverte le dimanche ? Si oui quel est le tarif d'entrée ?

Bonjour je ne suis pas sur du tout que la rhumerie soit ouverte le dimanche
Bonne visite

Hi Delia,
they vary in price. We bought the 9 year single barrel rum which cost us 6400MUR, about $240AUD, this was the high end scale of pricing. The VS, VSOP, Xo and single barrel are over $100.00 AUD
The premium rums from memory was $10.00 or so and over.

Prices vary dramatically from 20 to 300 Euros. In my opinion, the rum is not very good compared to the Caribbean and Central America. If you really need a bottle, the Lazy Dodo is quite cheap and makes an okay souvenir. I tasted rum throughout Mauritius and then chose to buy at duty free on my departure.
