Went there especially to take this train ride and was totally worth it. Took the 11 hour train on a nice sunny day ,went up to the lake and what a great view. I recommend it to everyone and better visit on low season, as...More
It's a long drive through the glorious mountains, but worth it. They don't really signpost the area too well but we followed the sat nav as we climbed ever higher. We arrived at the car park and this was free so a nice touch. We...More
We were booked to go on the train and had got to within about 5 km of the base when the road was blocked by a wagon that had caught fire. The police told us it would be several hours before cars could get through. In...More
This would have to be the highlight of my recent trip to France. The views are amazing, the birdlife we viewed was also incredible, the walk to the lake with its crystal clear water and on the way back down we saw many Marmites in...More
I highly recommend a trip on this train. As previous reviewers have said, the cable car journey to reach it is brilliant in itself. But then the train journey is better still. We arrived on a rainy day and went up the cable car in...More
This ride - although the train broke down for 10 minutes and we had to get another head loco to pull us the rest of the way - this just made for 10 extra minutes of views up the mountains which was utterly superb -...More
Other reviewers have summed up very well the pleasures of this small train that rides high in the mountains and affords its passengers superb views of the Pic du Midi d’Ossau - a spectacular sight - and surrounding peaks. I can add nothing other than...More
We went to Artouste late July 2018. The cost per adult is 25€ return trip, which we thought was really expensive until we realized that it includes return journeys on the cable car to the start of the train ride (about 15 mins each way),...More
Never heard of this train before being in the area. And expectations was not high.
Just approx. 20 mins drive from Laruns or 20 mins drive downhill from the Spanish/French border (Col de Pourtalet)
You will find the bottom lift station of Artouste.
Let me begin by saying that this trip is worth it and will seem like an adventure. We did it with our family (2 adults and teenage kids). We went there in June on a clear and sunny day during the coolest and wettest June...More

The road from Laruns is the main road to Spain and across the Pyrenees. It is with oncoming traffic, one lane each way, and has many twists and turns. You also have a good elevation gain. There are trucks on it which makes you sometimes want to tuck your belly in or hold your breath (that's what we do and then we laugh about it).
There are often cyclists on the road as well. Going up or down feels like a (safe) adventure, just like the train. The locals seem to be always in a hurry, ignore them. As a tourist, leave early enough and take it easy, go at a speed with which you are comfortable, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and stop from time to time to take pictures. It is a day trip don't rush it!
