The mountainous Arcadia is full of monasteries and churches and is suitable for religious tourism. The road to the parking lot is full of potholes. The walk to the monastery is 15 to 20 minutes. Without some sort of ceremony women are not allowed to enter if they are wearing pants and men are not allowed to enter if they are wearing shorts. 3 stars because it's amazing how some people punish themselves by living in a sleepless and sleepy place thinking this is something God wants. .

The roads to the parking area (from Elliniko or from the road between Dimitsana and Stemnitsa) are narrow and not in a good shape. But it is definitely worth to drive there (or to make a walk there, if you prefer)! Already the view from the parking area is awesome! From there, a 15 minutes walk leads down to this extraordinary monastery, which is "hanging" in the cliffs since around 1600 AD. Note that the monastery is closed every day from 1 to 5 pm, but even with closed gates it is a great experience. If you plan to go inside, you should know that men with shorts and women with trousers are not allowed to enter.

This is what came to my mind when I first saw it.
According to the history this monastery was built in the 16th century and played an important role during the Turkish occupation when was serving as a hospital for Greek fighters. There are still bullets holes on the main entrance. Right now, there are only 6 monks, we met 4 of them, one was painting the rails of one balcony, the other was the host, chatting with us, a third one, an older monk was cooking lunch and there was another one around at the entrance.
Words do not make justice to this place. You need to be there and feel the vibe. It is amazing how they built this centuries ago with so limited technology. They used all the mountain’s rock formation and configuration to make it happen. The church was built in a niche and the whole rest of the monastery was built on the mountain ledge rudimentary supported. It is mystery how that structure still stands braced by old wood logs.
The monastery is not close to Dimitsana as most info suggest. It is off the road to Stemnitza, a small village some 14 km away from Dimitsana. Then an 8 km drive on a winding road to the parking and another 20 minutes of hiking, be ready for a challenge. It is worth the whole effort though. The monks will serve you coffee, tea, cookies and will let you rest in their guest room. Yes, it is rather commercial now, but isn’t everywhere the same? Just go, you will have an experience of a lifetime.
Be aware, the monastery is closed between 1 and 5, plan your visit taking this into cosideration

Very spectacular sight. You come out of the bushes, walk along the cliff, look up and see these hanging wooden "balconies". The real decoration of the first segment of the "Menalon trail" - of course, together with a delightfully picturesque gorge, where flows Lucios river. This is the peak, the apogee of the day track. You won't meet more such a combination of natural and man-made delights on the trail. Both Philosophou monasteries are not bad , but they are quite ordinary. In addition, they can be reached by car.

If your in the area you should definitely go to this monastery. It's situated on the hillside sloping down to the gorge. It's easy to reach if you've a car (30 min drive from Demitsana) if you're not afraid of driving in small mountain roads. It's a short walk downhill from the parking and you'll be there in 10 min.
I continued to the new and old philosopher's monasteries on the other side of the valley. It takes approximately 45-60 min one way.

So pleased that we made the effort to reach Prodomou Monastery. It is a very windy steep road down, with spectacular views all around. Then once, parked, it is a steep walk down (remember you have to get back up again!) to the Monastery through beautifully wooded scenery. It is worth the effort. The monastery is spectacularly located in the cliff face. Note the ancient doorway into the monastery. Inside, the monk guestmaster provides coffee and a welcome, and you are welcome to visit the tiny Church where prayers have been lifted for 800 years, with the ancient icons and frescoes just visible in the darkness. From the balcony are wonderful views of the monastery and the gorge. A peaceful and beautiful place hidden in the Greek mountains.

We hiked over from Dimitsana, it was a quite hot day to climb up the hill, but we had nice company along the way up. Interesting place.

This hanging monastery is spectacular. The walk from the parking is pretty easy, from the gorge below is a challenge but it's worth it. Note the opening hours! We arrived 10 minutes past 13:00 - but they close between 13:00-17:00 so we couldn't visit inside either the church or the actual monastery.

Our two weeks in Greece concentrated mainly on monasteries. Moni Agiou Ioanni Prodromou was probably my favorite. No crowds were present and we had an opportunity to talk to the Greek Orthodox caretaker. The chapel was tiny, carved out only for the few monks who had lived there. We were given coffee and sweets in their hospitality room. Just standing on that balcony overlooking the valley below was breathtaking and it was humbling to realize that others had done so for centuries.
The hike to this monastery is not easy, but doable for most if a person takes their time. Scenery surrounding Moni Agiou Ioanni Prodromou is beyond words.

Είναι κλειστή το μεσημέρι 13.00 με 17.00 αλλά και πάλι δεν είναι τόσο αυστηρά αν πάτε λίγο πριν τις 17.00

How much walking (and is it steep walking) is involved in viewing this monastery? We will be using a private tour guide.
Written April 2, 2019
If you are with a private guide, they should be able to slow down to your capability. By all means use the parking lot close to the monastery if you are challenged walking. However, I enjoyed the hike and scenery.
