The section of the Great Wall near the village of Huangyaguan is at least two hours from Beijing and is therefore not normally visited by tourists from overseas. However in 1999 the first Great Wall Marathon occurred and it incorporated this section of the Great Wall. Since then thousands of athletes from throughout the world have experienced this unique event involving a section of an ancient and amazing structure.

This is a classic event, but don’t do it if you are after a PB. There are now four events; the marathon, a half marathon, a 10km and a 5km. Participants get the opportunity to check out the 3.2km section of the Wall that the marathon entrants will traverse twice and those in the half marathon, 10k and 5k will cover once. This distance may not seem much, but most of the Wall section consists of steps up or down and after about half way the Wall narrows (with a parapet on one side and a drop on the other) and then becomes a ‘goat track’ for the final descent.
I walked (with some running) the half marathon and thoroughly enjoyed the experience as well as the opportunity to explore the country town of Jixian (where our group stayed prior to the event) and Beijing.
The event is well organised and organisers obviously relied upon China to provide appropriate support. Overall this symbiosis was successful but there were some interesting occasions where cultural differences did not fully sync. This just made my experience more interesting.
For more information about this event check out the Great Wall Marathon web site and various YouTube clips.

Visited Huangyaguan for a daytrip from Tianjin. It wasn't that convenient but highly recommended if you have time in Tianjin. Do note that there are buses that head straight to Huangyaguan from Tianjin via Tongsha bus station. These buses depart at fixed timings though, there should be a 710 and 1010 bus in the morning. Overall journey takes about 2.5hrs.

I had expected the place to be touristy but it wasn't so I had to engage someone to bring me up to the top to hike down. The great wall was quiet and I dont think I saw more than 10 people during my hike. Total distance was 2.4km and would take you about 1.5 to 2 hrs to finish.Took lots of nice photos as there was nobody around at all

Going back to Tianjin was troublesome but try to catch a bus to bring you to the Jizhou Passsenger station and grab a bus to Tianjin.

Amazing experience. If you are anywhere nearby I suggest you take the time to visit. The wallis a tough walk, so you will need to be prepared for many steps and lots of miles. Well worth it for the view and to experience this treasure.

This Great Wall is a little bit inconvenient, people have to drive cars or order taxis to arrive there. However, I truly think this amazing place deserves it. Unlike the Great Wall near Beijing where always crowded with people, travelers can enjoy the trip in the great(quiet haha)atmosphere here, which I really cherish and adore.

Once in a lifetime experience. Really recommend this. The facilities like toilets are horrible and not much to eat but the race was very well organized and they really looked after us

We booked to hike from Jiankou to Mutianyu with Zhang (John) from hereisbeijing, so glad that we did! You get dropped at a ‘wild’ section of the wall, and hike to the restored Mutianyu section, where you can walk down, get a cable car or jump on the toboggan. The hike is fine, it gets you breathing but nothing anyone of average fitness couldn’t manage!

John was awesome, spoke fantastic English, made sure we had all the information we needed, answered any questions on anything we had to ask on China in general and just couldn’t do enough for you. Definitely worth getting in touch if you want to see the wall (check his website or +86 136 8113 9171)

Once english speaking woman on the street offers to visit her pub, beware coming there.
The pub probably has double prices, the most expensive offer to foreign visitors is provided only, from the board on the wall (no prices there).
Usual meal for very unusual prices, which you can see later only, after ask the bill.
In more detail, we had lunch for 4 people (4 meals), almost 800 CNY (RMB). See the photo of the pub and beware going to "Restaurant Coffee Beer" pub.

Ran from the entrance of the Great Wall to Yin Yang Square twice for about 6 K on this section of the Great Wall for the Great Wall Marathon in mid May. I also walked this section of the Great Wall the day before the race.

It took about 2 hours by bus from our hotel in Beijing to reach the Great Wall at Huangyaguan. This section of the Great Wall was in very good shape for walking. There are several steep sections with many steps to climb up and down. Comfortable shoes are highly recommended. Being in good physical condition would also be a benefit. There were also vendors on the Wall selling refreshment and souvenirs. There are no toilets on the Wall itself.

I completed the Great Wall (half) Marathon on this part of the wall in May this year. The wall itself & the views are just spectacular & it was such a privilege to have the opportunity to experience this beautiful place. The surrounding villages/township was also a hightlight for me.... the people are very friendly and kind. I left with wonderful lifelong memories.

Amazing experience running the Great Wall Marathon here. I absolutely recommend it!

It's STEEP though. Take it slowly and be sure stay hydrated in summer.

The wall is well paved in this section.
