    Great views of Mt. Fuji!
The view of Mt. Fuji from Oshino-Hakkai are among the best we've seen. The site is relatively close to Mt. Fuji and the mountain is seen from across the water, making for great photos, both in the morning and evening.

Extremely pretty during the sakura season.
We took the 8 am A1 bus from bus stop number 6 at Kawaguchiko station and stopped at bus stop number 25. From this bus stop, we crossed the road and walked past a car park to reach the amazing view of the fully boomed cherry trees on both sides of a river and clearly visible Mt Fuji in the background. There is one bridge along the river with the best view of cherry blossoms and Mt Fuji. Entry is free. We also saw some ponds with its very clear water. Oshino Hakkai are a set of eight ponds located in the Fuji Five Lakes area, on the site of a former sixth lake that dried out several centuries ago. The eight ponds are fed by snowmelt from the slopes of Mount Fuji that filters down the mountain through porous layers of volcanic rock over a period of several decades. This makes the mineral-rich pond waters remarkably clear and pristine. Oshino Hakkai are part of the Mt. Fuji UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, designated in 2013. There are regular A1, F1 and F2 buses plying between Kawaguchiko Station and Oshino Hakkai. First bus there is at 6:50 and the last bus back is at 19:07.

    Beautiful small village
Because of the weather, we could not see Mt Fuji. The village, however, was worth to visit. We enjoyed walking around to watch the beautiful ponds and houses, as well as taste the food at reasonable price. There were couple sakura trees along the river, beautiful enough to stop and take picture.

Lovely tranquil village with lakes & picturesque thatched cottages
Definitely get there early & avoid the crowds. Be aware that there are numerous lakes dotted around the village - not all together. It's worth doing some wandering & exploring - as the main 5 lakes are together & others further out. The village is pretty & the residents friendly & helpful. The main lakes area has numerous eating venues, drinks machines, seating area & toilets. The reflection in the lakes of Mount Fuji is great. Some areas need a ticket to enter & be aware of the opening times. The area is all level so easy access & walking. There are buses - not so frequent & taxis, if your travelling independently

    Rustic and serene
Mt Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan at 3776 m tall. The symmetrically elegant mountain is the icon of Japan. Many tourists like me flock our way from Tokyo to the Fuji 5-lake region at the base of the mountain just to admire her awe-inspiring and magnificent view. But Mt Fuji is still an active volcano and is destined to erupt though her last eruption was 300 years ago in 1707. More than 100,000 people died during that disaster. Seismic experts have raised the alarm that Mt Fuji has entered a standby phase for the first time in 300 years and may erupt anytime in 30 years following a major Nankai Trough earthquake. I wonder what would happen to this touristy village when Mt Fuji erupts? But why 杞人忧天 as if the sky will collapse. I think the Japanese government is prepared and is monitoring the seismic activities of this volcano very closely especially when there is an earthquake at the nearby region. Coming back to this small touristy village, Oshino Hakkai (忍野八海); it located at the base of Mt Fuji between Lake KawaguchiKo and Lake Yamanakako, has 8 ponds (八海) formed as a result of melted snow filter down from Mt Fuji through layer of porous lava resulting in very clear spring water. Entrance to the village is free. We were happy for a short while when we could see Mt Fuji from the very first pond near to the entrance. But it was just a very short glimpse and then the cloud started covering part of her beautiful face. I wandered around and could smell the aromatic smell of the grilled squid at a food stall. We tasted some wasabi nuts, and some pickled vegetables at some of the food stalls. The village looks rustic and serene with the thatched roof cottages like what we saw at Shirakawa go village. When snow shrouded these houses, the view would be picturesque. I was trying to find all the 8 ponds around the village as if on a treasure hunt but halfway, I was distracted by the ice cream stall, and I just lost count of how many ponds I came by. There is a signage near the pond which forbade the throwing of coins into the ponds as these ponds are not wishing ponds. We were here for an hour. When the bus was departing, I took a last look at Mt Fuji and I shuddered. What if it really erupts?

Worth the visit, even if Mount Fuji was hidden by clouds
We visited Oshino Hakkai hoping to see Mount Fuji. Unfortunately, clouds obscured the view, but we were able to see the crystal clear ponds and thatched roof farmhouses. There are a number of shops selling food and souvenirs.

    Amazing village.
Oshino Hakkai is a charming town surrounded by stunning scenery, with a clear view of Mt. Fuji from the village. The history of this place is fascinating, especially the crystal-clear ponds, which are incredibly beautiful. The water is cold and clean, and we enjoyed watching trout swimming around, making it an unforgettable experience. We also tried some local food, including grilled fish, fresh fruit, and sweet treats. Additionally, we purchased some souvenirs at very reasonable prices. Absolutely love this place!

I want you to cherish the beautiful pond
It is a place where you can enjoy the idyllic scenery while watching Mt. The kettle pond was very mysterious. This is my second visit, but compared to before it became a world heritage site, the souvenir shops, restaurants and walking paths are now neatly maintained, and the rustic taste of the past may have been lost considerably. There was also a pond where coins were thrown, which made me wish it had never become a World Heritage site. There were many foreign tourists.

It became a famous tourist spot...
It was also registered as a World Heritage site and was crowded with many tourists, including myself. I didn't really feel the long and quiet atmosphere you see in the pictures. It also feels like overtourism. The scattered ponds were said to be spring water from Mt. Fuji, so they were beautiful. The view of Mt. Fuji from here was also good, but I was keenly aware that Oshino has become a tourist destination.

It was very cold when we went, and the road a bit slippery, but we drove from Tokyo and arrived about 1h40min at Oshino Hakkai.
There is a museum which costs 300yen and you feed the money into a machine and choose the number of persons you need to buy for.

Be careful though, they only give one ticket even if you choose 2 or more people, so you have to enter together.
The couple manning the booth were very unfriendly. They got irritated with us while we were explaining that we had bought 4 tickets but one of the four was at the toilet. And because it was one ticket for 4 persons, and the child and another already went in, they actually asked us to pay for the 4th person again when she arrived. Not a nice experience with them.

That said, the lake inside was beautiful, there were ducks and black koi and some trout in it and the view of Mt Fuji was amazing. You can climb up the stairs to a platform above the booth to take more photos, or go round the lake where there’s other nice areas for photo taking or just to sit on the bench outside the houses to enjoy the view. The houses have items on display and you have to remove your shoes to enter to explore. It’s quite cold in the houses.

There’s also another little pond with Super clear water, very lovely.

There’s some pellets that you can feed the ducks and fish with.

The village outside this paid area has a street with plenty of food. The yakitori was wonderful and we enjoyed that. The roasted chestnuts were huge compared to the ones we were used to, and very delicious.
There are other items as well but we did not try them.

There are 7 other lakes you can explore in the same area. Please DO NOT throw coins into the lakes/ponds.

Oshino Hakkai is famous for its fish ponds. There are a total of 8 fish ponds in the area. Experience the traditional Japanese town in Oshino Hakkai. Located between Lake Kawaguchiko and Lake Yamanakako, Oshino Hakkai offers several shops that sell locally sourced products such as fresh fruits, vegetables, sweets, souvenirs, and many more!

We visited this place at about 8-9 am and I can say with 100% confidence that this is the best time to visit, since we were alone! Beautiful nature, clean lakes, silence, dragonflies and sun rays.

This place will definitely lose all its charm if it gets crowded because it is tiny. But I really, really recommend going here!

It is full of Chinese tourists.
An aunt/granny(?) working at a rest stop next to a corn field a short distance away It was rude and very unpleasant for them. We bought soft serve ice cream and laughed at each other's conversation again, mocking our elderly father for asking about local food, a response he mocked the whole time, saying that his fellow aunts had asked us this when we hadn't left the store yet. I felt really bad.

Each pond is very clear and beautiful. However, it is smaller than I expected, so it feels lonely without taking a photo with Mt. Fuji.

I had originally planned to go on September 8th, but rain was forecast so I went a day earlier on the 7th. Mt. Fuji was hidden by clouds in the morning, but by the afternoon we were lucky as most of it was visible. An old man in the parking lot near the Oshino Hakkai bus stop said, "In the summer, you can hardly see Mt. Fuji, so we're lucky today."

By the way, it rained on the 8th as forecast, and to make matters worse, the Mt. Fuji Excursion train that I was planning to take was cancelled. The Mt. Fuji Excursion train and the Izu Odoriko train can easily be suspended due to rain, so it's a good idea to be able to change your plans flexibly.

Oshino Hakkai is the collective name for eight spring-fed ponds that are fed by underground water from Mt. Fuji. Seven of the eight ponds are relatively close together, but Deguchi Pond, the largest, is a little far away, so we toured the other seven ponds, Oshino Hakkai Sengen Shrine, and Toenji Temple. We received a map of the area around Oshino Hakkai at the tourist information center and spent about two hours touring the area. Each pond is filled with clear water, but the views aren't all that great. It's a place you'll want to walk around and feel the history that has walked alongside Mt. Fuji, enjoying some rice dumplings at the nearby shops and admiring the waterwheels and buildings on the ponds.

This time we introduce "Oshino Hakkai"

It seems to be a spring pond made from the underground water of Mt.
There were a huge number of tourists when I visited.
There are far more foreigners than Japanese.
There are several parking lots nearby, so you should park there.

There are several ponds.
I guess my Recommendation is Kamaike.
There are few people, but the blue color is extremely beautiful.
There are other famous ponds, where money has been thrown in.
Unfortunately, I could not feel the natural feeling.

It also has bad manners for tourists and is not a good tourist destination.

Our guide brought us to this restored village and we started by sampling some peach green tea (cold) and mushroom "tea" (hot) and ended up buying some of both to take home. Walked over to the restored house and walked through; very interesting to see what life was like decades ago. Took pics with Mt. Fuji in the background. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great, so the pics didn't come out like you imagine.
Fed the Koi in the pond and walked through the shop. A little on the touristy side (they were selling Mt. Fuji everything, including some things that had nothing to do with the mountain itself).
All in all a nice stop on our tour.

Due to COVID, hardly any people were roaming around @ 0900 on the weekday. Some serious photographers were there with their tripods & big cameras capturing the Sakura & Mt Fuji. Tranquil & beautiful ponds & trails!! Souvenir shops & a few places to buy food. Parking was close & free.

This small village with thatched roofs and no particular charm, is a victim of its success! It is invaded by mass tourism that takes away the pleasure of visiting it. Many shops have also squatted in the space and the crowds are swarming like an anthill. Sincerely go your way, there is definitely better to see elsewhere 😡
