Amazing Fortress oozing History and charm
The views are amazing, we took so many photos. We spent a lot longer here then we first thought. Plenty to see in this historic fortress. Fascinating history and grounds that have been kept well. We paid the extra to use the funicular to ride up to the castle and take the tour. Glad we did, we visited on a rainy day so I'm sure the climb would have been better in nicer weather but the ride up saved us. The fortress has a great gift shop and the onsite restaurant was serving tasty food. On busier days there is also a fast food outlet in the courtyard, but the day we visited it was not worth opening for the few visitors. The exhibition on hex and witches was a nice bonus, and offcourse the falconry display was exceptional. Watching those birds perform amazing flights with the keepers was fantastic. The tour was a real insight into the history and we got to see some parts of the castle you can't see without the extra ticket. Do this as it's so worth it, you get to climb the ramparts, visit the jail, and climb into the highest point the bell tower! If your scared of heights don't do this bit! Amazing tour guide too. Handsets avalible for most languages. A good solid day out.... A dream of mine to visit. Ample parking if your driving. If your walking from the station like we did note it is a gentle climb up and then the path is next to the busy road. In busier seasons there is a bus service.. 10/10 P.s all the staff we interacted with in the restaurant, shop and the tour were friendly, happy and clearly enjoy there role. Good to see.

    Great few hours out.
Hubby, me and 14 up went by bus for the day. Saw the birds of prey show which was amazing (albeit we couldn't understand the commentary - our faults for not learning German!) and the tour was good fun. Views from the bell tower were superb. The tour is also conducted in German and English speakers have an audio which isn't as loud as the tour guide, however if there was some thing which sounded interesting I just asked her to explain it in English which she did. The trip was really good and easy to rea h from Werfen train station. The funicular was terrifying but fun!

Wonderful tour - make sure you see the Birds of Prey show.
We prebooked tour tickets including the funicular. We caught the train from Salzburg to Werfen, then walked from the train station to the funicular. The walk is about 1.5 miles and took 20 minutes. The cable car is very quick. We booked an English version and were given an audio handset that you could listen to as the tour progressed. My complaint - instructions on how to use the device would have been helpful, it was frustrating trying to figure out how to get it to work. Got it to work and then enjoyed the rest of the tour. The castle is very impressive. Definitely try and catch the Birds of Prey show. The Castle is the official Falconry of Austria. The birds are magnificent. We are glad we did this tour. Would definitely recommend.

    Stunning castle
The castle is stunning. We didn’t have to wait too long for the cable car. There are a few exhibitions which are relatively interesting. The best part was definitely the birds of prey show. We were at the castle for a couple of hours. We bought our tickets online, which meant we avoided the queue.

On a busy August day, you may find yourself waiting in line for a looong time here!
We did and it was super frustrating and disappointing.

After 15 minutes waiting to register (Covid Vaccinations) and more to pay (only one till open), we had to wait another 20+ minutes to go up in the packed & slow lift - all of which meant we missed the birds of prey display :-(

We then stood in line for tickets for the guided tour, only to be told that we'd need to wait for 1.5 hours for the next available spots. With kids that's a long time to wait so we decided to forgo that pleasure and spent 30 minutes looking around the various exhibits and then hit the road feeling like we had paid a lot and waited a lot with little reward.

Pros
Booked online to avoid queues. Caught lift up. Falconry display was excellent! Worth getting a seat at the bottom of the hill for full experience. Walked down and took advantage to a couple of extra exhibitions and well maintained path through woods to the car park.
Special exhibitions (witchcraft and where eagles dare) reasonable

Cons
Covid response not great. 20 people in the lift excessive. 5 would be more like it. Few hand gel points, limited bathrooms and mask usage haphazard
No map so difficult to explore and make sure you have visited everything
Bring cash: gift shop, cafe and audioguide are cash only.
Some parts of Castle only available when on a tour (German only) or purchase of audio guide (2€ but cleaning lax during covid and cash only. Not bookable via website)
While externally intact, inside is not particularly well explained, very limited and sparse.

A really nice castle which offers a lot of history and some really great views. There are also some nice walking paths around the castle, where I found several lizards on my way.

The bird show was spectacular as well, but as a bird enthusiast I can´t really say I enjoyed it very much. Always sad to see the birds sitting in their cages, waiting for their perfomance.

It was much more enjoyable to witness a couple of free Eagles in the mountains from the top of the castle.

Magnificent castle, immortalized by the movie "Where Eagles Dare" and that was the main reason for our visit. Easy access by highway from Salzburg, beautiful surroundings (plenty of nature activities), cable car facility to the top and one can also take a hike to the top. The main interiors of the castle (breathtaking views from the bell tower) can only be visited with a guided tour (mainly in German (tour guide) and only available in English on a tour audio guide system) and some shows about the history of the castle and also it's appearance in movies as the main filming location. In the afternoon, there is the impressive Birds of Prey show, with trained Eagles, Falcons and Vultures and it was quite enjoyable. Good cafeteria facility serving palatable dishes, so one can spend some time up here, we spent half a day just walking around and enjoying breathtaking scenic views from the Castle. The castle itself isn't very big, perched as it is on the top of a hill and if one were to watch the movie Where Eagles Dare and then go to the castle, it may be disappointing for some as expectations tend to build of up of something more grandiose whereas one has to separate fact from fiction and view it from that perspective. Also, the views of the castle that are portrayed on internet, one can't get that can't of a view from the ground and only if you were high up somewhere like on an opposite mountain range with a clear view, helicopter, wing suit or drone footage.

This is a great castle to visit, and thankfully has a funicular to help get to the top. You may need to pay in cash, card payments were not accepted when we visited which resulted in a mad dash to the nearby town. This did not dampen our visit and we were lucky to arrive in time to see a fantastic falconry display. The main area and clock tower is by timed tour but really worth waiting for. the views from the top are fantastic

We should have walked up. Charging €17 for the funicular (tour included) was too pricey, but we were in a hurry. They need to have a funicular only price. We did not take the tour, but in general, it appears like the castle was more impressive from the outside than the inside. You couldn't see much without a tour, but it didn't seem like there was that much of it to tour.

We bought ticket online while waiting in line but do it before.
We decided to take the lift up as it was raining and it was a cool ride up. And then luckily we arrived just in time for the bird show. Absolutely amazing to see the eagles, falcons and vultures perform and fly over you with less than a meter.
There was an exhibition on the castle being in the old war movie “Where eagles dare” and one on witches.
In the rush to buy our ticket I did not buy for the guided tour so we could not try it. So did not get to see much of the inside and there was not a lot of places you could go hence “only” 4 stars.

A very magnificent building where you can climb up to the bell tower for a stunning view over area. The tour includes the torcher chamber ! You go up by vehicular to the castle entrance. The ticket cost also includes the falconry show which is lovely.
