About
Charnwood Forest Alpacas is located in Boundary, a hamlet nestled on the Leicestershire and Derbyshire border and situated on the outskirts of Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Our 110 acre farm at Charnwood Forest Alpacas is one of the first, original and largest alpaca farms open to the public in the UK. We are passionate about sharing the wonderful personalities of not just our alpacas, but all of the animals at the farm, and offer experiences with lots of our animals to help share our passion with you. Or pop into our petting farm and meet our alpacas, horses, donkeys, sheep, pigs, chickens and cats. My father in law purchased a voucher to go and walk the Alpacas on the 90 minutes experience. My partner called to book it a couple of weeks ago and stated we had a 9 years old daughter and a 2 year old son, they expressed there would be no problem and it’s fine for kids from the ages of 0.
Last night before the visit we checked the website and it did say no pushchairs were allowed, which I can understand as the walk was very muddy and slippy.
Upon arrival the lady at the desk was rather rude and said will your child be able to walk 3 miles without you picking him up? Turns out due to health and safety at no point can you pick your child up and walk with them. At this time I was concerned my son has only just turned 2 and didn’t think he would be able to, 1. walk 3 miles without a helping hand 2. The conditions were terrible and slippy due to it being in farmers fields.
I asked if it was possible to change the date and come back another time so we could get childcare, they said NO and we would lose our money. If they had stated all this on the website regarding not being able to pick your child up, we would of made arrangements for someone to look after him, but they insisted it’s ok for kids from 0-9 years of age.
I then asked for the manager, who came our quickly, however when I asked if we could come back the following week, she raised her voice at me and said they wouldn’t have a business if everyone did this. AGAIN my response was they should state on website the walk isn’t suitable for young children!!
We decided to do the walk as didn’t want to lose the experience that had been paid for and luckily my son managed to complete it, I must say the guide that took us round was very professional and all times and very polite and understanding of the situation.
Safe to say we won’t be returning and I would urge the manager to change the wording on the website to state if bringing Children they must be able to walk 3 miles with the help of an adult and at no point can a parent pick them up due to ‘Health and Safety’ (Which isn’t stated on the site)
Very misleading

Just to let you know that if you are even 4 minutes late you will not be able to join the health and safety talk and therefore not be able to do your experience. We emailed ahead to say we were slightly delayed due to traffic and our eta was 1:35pm instead of the 1:30pm start time. We received a reply saying they would try to hold off a few minutes. They called us at 1:33pm, the call was missed but we called back just one minute later when we arrived at 1:34pm. The call was cancelled. We tried calling back 7 times in total! We then went into the entrance / gift shop and although the health and safety talk had literally just started we were not allowed to join. We had one very disappointed 10 year old just before Christmas. We were allowed to walk around and see some animals. We were hoping to be able to rebook for a discount but this was denied. Whatever you do arrive on time of you will be out of pocket £80!!!

Dear Reviewer
Many thanks for your feedback. We are very sorry that you missed your experience3 with us. We have to adhere to a stringent health and safety policy so if any or all is missed we simply cannot allow anyone to continue. At several points from booking including the day before there is a reminder of your experience and a request to set off to arrive 30 minutes before your time to ensure you do not miss the health and safety brief.
We also have other guests on each experience who may be on a time schedule (as are we as a business) so it would wholly inappropriate to cause delays to the majority because the minority are unable to set off in gopod time.
By arriving in the carpark at 1.34pm, it would take at least 5 minutes to walk to reception, book in and walk around to the start point. The health and safety brief starts at 1.35pm.
In all I do feel for your disappointed daughter, however, we cannot be responsible for that and did what we could to arrange a walk around the farm.

Had a fantastic time on our Alpaca walk experience I had Knowledge a beautiful alpaca walked round fields had a break halfway round gives you a chance to take pictures and selfies our leader Chloe also took photos for us and made sure everyone was ok with walking with the alpacas bought some feed for them a tip is do not let them see the bag keep it in your pocket and feed them a bit at a time if they see the bag they will rob it off you. Felt really confident going round very friendly and very lovable. Then had afternoon tea in cafe really tasty and good service. Can buy food and drink in cafe don't have to be on experience reasonable prices too also sell alcohol cocktail's bottled beers etc.

I was gifted an experience for 2 including afternoon tea for Christmas just gone, I had originally booked a few months earlier but with COVID and lockdown that was scrapped.
Without even promoting them, they had made sure to keep me up to date with emails on what was happening and what to expect. This included an email with a brand new date to visit, along with a link to look at what safety guidelines they had in place.
So the day arrived yesterday, they made sure to have you wash your hands before entering the shop to book in. Booking in took seconds for both me and my sister considering I brought my 6 year old neice who didn't need a ticket but I still expected it to be a little longer to book her in but no. She was free of charge as well. You also get the option to buy food for the alpacas for 50p a bag which is a bargain I think.
We headed outside for our time slot which was 11am. Our guide (I forgot her name and feel awful for forgetting) came and collected our group and took us in a barn for a walk through of what to expect along with some extra facts about the alpacas and made it fun and enjoyable with her jokes and silliness which my normally shy neice enjoyed.
We then headed out to get our alpacas. I was under the impression there would be 1 alpaca between each party but we actually got 1 for each adult and my neice shared with me.
We had the gorgeous teacup, he was just an absolute gem. We were smitten the second we'd laid our eyes on him. And my sister had Jerome.
The guide then took us on a lovely scenic walk around the farm, past horses, pigs and sheep. Talking to everyone at some point and making it that much more personal, she really was a Ray of sunshine to be around.
Half way we stopped for some personal time with our alpacas. We fed them, gave the attention and had pictures. It was amazing. But what ever you do please listen to the guide when they say, don't show the alpacas the white food bag because they will not stop until they get it all, haha🤣🤣
We then continued our walk back to the beginning.
In the time you are out you really do get to see their funny, quirky and sometimes stubborn personalities it's hilarious. My neice was just in her element the entire time.
I cannot credit them enough for the health and safety they've put in place. And even more so for just how lovely the staff are.
I've done a few experiences like this but I find animal welfare is sometimes an issue but here every animal I saw was so healthy looking and none of them seemed stressed.
I will most definitely be doing it again and again.
Hopefully with my son next year when he's a little bigger to walk the distance on his own.
Thank you again for such a lovely experience.

We purchased vouchers for this attraction on-line in March 2020 and then Covid struck! However the proprietors of the attraction offered to extend the period of the voucher until Lockdown was lifted. So today with a lowering sky we joined our group for a 90 minutes walk with Alpacas. Tatum was our walk supervisor and her knowledge of the subject was excellent. Her radio-mike failed and she had to resort to 'old-fashioned' shouting but we all heard what she had to say. Our group was made up of 20 individuals of all ages. We each walked an Alpaca each over farm tracks, up and down hill. We learned to contend with temperament of our beasts and the threatening rain disappeared, the sun shone and the temperature rose. Just a perfect way to enjoy my day. On site there is souvenir shop, ice cream booth and a cafe where snack meals can be purchased at a reasonable cost. Covid restrictions were well managed.

I booked the 90 minute Alpaca experience for our family of 3 including a 12 yr old, at arrival on site there’s ample parking, a small shop, toilets and Chilli Bean Cafe.
Waiting for your booking slot there are other animals to view: Donkeys, Horses, Sheep, Alpacas.
Once your group is called there’s a 10 minute safety briefing with demo on how to walk & feed your Alpaca (small bags of food 50p extra from the shop).
You are then given your Alpaca for the walk & head off in your group around the fields.
Even though it was raining the walk was lovely, definitely need wellies or walking boots if it’s been raining. Dress appropriately as there’s no shelter!
The Alpacas were so gentle and funny, half way through the walk you have a break to allow for feeding them and photos. Our guide Florence came round to each group to assist with photo taking.
Florence did an amazing job keeping the group together, passing informative information about the Alpacas whilst on the walk.
I’d definitely recommend this experience and have done so since to family & friends. Great experience with a visit to the on site Cafe afterwards.

A really enjoyable Friday afternoon. The experience was approximately 90 minutes, including a pre walk briefing session, which was very informative. Our guide, Grace was very knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions. A walk of roughly 2.5 miles. The alpacas were extremely cute, friendly and passive. My alpaca was called Selene, and my partner's was called Harmonia.
I would definitely recommend buying the alpaca feed (50pence a bag), it was fun when we fed the alpacas half way round the walk.
Although we didn't buy anything, the little shop had plenty of things to buy, and the food in the cafe looked really nice.

This was a re-booked 90 minute alpaca walk with sparkling afternoon tea which had been cancelled due to Covid.
The team at Charnwood Alpacas were so helpful at rearranging our experience and we were given clear instructions for Covid security. There's lots of hand-wahsing stations on site and a disinfectant to walk through before accessing the site.
Thy have one way systems, requests for wearing masks indoors and the loos are one party in one out.
Our guide Grace was informative and entertaining and a wealth of information.
Despite having 21 in our party we were able to sit for the briefing at safe distances and once out on the walk with the alpacas we naturally kept distance by having an alpaca between each person.
The weather was dull and misty but our spirits were still high and despite being bedraggled when we got back the walk was highly enjoyable.
I would say your enjoyment depends on what you are like with your alpaca, they are living creatures and scare at squeals and nervousness, if you're relaxed and confident then your alpaca will be well behaved and in some cases rather nosey - especially if you have a bag of food!
They all ahve their own personalitite and I had Edward in the third group.
The sparkling tea was prompt and well presented with a good variety of food. The staff at the cafe were helpful and friendly. It was so refreshing to get out and do something 'normal' after all this lockdown.

I booked the 90 minute Alpaca Walking Experience for my grown-up daughter, my husband and myself. The whole experience was excellent from start to finish. Our guide, Louise, met our group (3 of us, 7 in total) and spent about 15 minutes talking about Alpacas and how to behave and handle them during the walk. She was very knowledgeable and made it really interesting. She then brought in an Alpaca to show us their key features and the depth of its fleece at this time of year. They are the most adorable animals. Next we were all paired up with our own Alpaca. The walk is around the farmland and is great fun. There is an opportunity for taking photos and feeding them part way around. Louise wore a headset/microphone so it was easy to hear instructions and she answered numerous questions throughout the walk. The Alpacas are good-natured and each has its own personality which makes it even more fun. I felt quite attached to my one, Jamiroquai, by the time I had to release him back into the field. This is a well-run, informative and enjoyable experience which I thoroughly recommend.

We did the alpaca walk yesterday as a family of 6 and really enjoyed it. The walk was well
Organised and our guide was informative, chatty and patient. Masks were worn at all times to ensure COVID safety and you could take them off on the photo opportunity when you fed the alpacas and for photos. The feed is 50p per bag - highly recommend you buy some - the alpacas go mad for it! Loved the fact the guide knew all the alpacas but sight and their little quirks and characters. They are clearly loved and well cared for. Oh and Don’t forget your wellies!! We would go back to do this again someday - maybe when the babies are about!

Well behaved dogs are allowed on our site and can go on our farm walk with their humans. However, dogs are not allowed on our experiences or in the cafe/shop, with the exception of service dogs

I’ve booked to visit Charnwood Forest Alpacas for my birthday as they appear to be well looked after. I’m a vegan and adore animals and will never pay to go to zoos/safari parks etc as they are generally cruel and I diasagrer with locking animals up in confined areas etc. I like to see animals via rescue centres. Are the alpacas treated with love and compassion here? I they free to roam, eat well, bathed, brushed etc?

Absolutely they have so much space and are very well cared for. Also they are treated as individuals not just a herd. They all look super healthy and very content.

Sounds silly but do you have the afternoon tea after you've walked the alpacas? Have booked both and booked the time 11.30? I'm assuming it's the walk first but just to be sure
