- Sally WBeaconsfield, United Kingdom42 contributionsWell worth the journeyOff the beaten track but well worth a visit for stunning scenery and close up animal experiences. We managed to tick 22 out of 29 of the animals off the list including a walking tour to come within 10 meters of a cheeta and her cubs feeding. Evening/nighttime Safari tour also well worth the money. All guides were extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. We stayed in one of the Rock villas which was well kitted out and had stunning views of the park. Recommended to stop in Cradock to buy supplies for mealsVisited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 19, 2024
- ettelbruckHelsinki, Finland701 contributionsLovely National ParkThis was our 12th SANP park to visit. We stayed four nights on rest camp unit #23, and enjoyed every minute. This unit was on top condition and very clean. Nice braai, good housekeeping, short walk to reception. The whole park is full of unforgettable scenes and nice animal sightings. You MUST book cheetah tracking, and misters Richard and Andrew are really top class guides to find you something unforgettable to see. We also highly recommend You to book night drive. Despite really unpleasant weather we saw eg. bush pigs and some other rare animals. Restaurant is also very nice, really enjoyable stew and shank - as carpaccio, too. On all routes You can find unbeliveable nice sceneries. So remember to drive all self-drive routes. Including the southernmost one! At reception they have really five star staff! If something to complain, Park Shop does not have such a great variety of food items and wines - but distance to Cradock Spar and Tops! is relatively short.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 5, 2024
- Navigate097578898181 contributionWonderful experienceWonderful park set in a beautiful mountain setting, we really enjoyed our visit to the park. The chalets were clean and well equipped. They have the most amazing views!! The game up on Rooiplat was great - black wildebeest, blesbok, Cape mountain zebra. Pool was nice, the staff friendly and the restaurant was solid. We will most definitely revisit the Mountain Zebra ParkVisited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 14, 2024
- IssyallUpper Beeding, United Kingdom47 contributionsMountain air, views to die for, comfy accommodationAbsolutely stunning scenery and driving. Mountains and plains, experience a slice of the Karoo. Relatively quiet compared to national parks boasting the Big Five, mountain zebra is as much about its scenery, clean air, and experiencing the high plains as it is about its animals. Herds of springbok and red hartebeest roam the plains, with wildebeest, jackals and ground squirrels. An abundance of birds to enjoy too. The accommodation was modern by SanParks standards - make sure you select a place with a view as some views looked far better than others and it was priceless watching the sunset over the mountains unencumbered. Two good pools to choose from and a good restaurant, it was a really relaxing and beautiful place.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 9, 2024
- Brett NEast London, South Africa66 contributionsSANPARKS Never DisappointsWe were absolutely blown away by this National Park. All the staff from the entrance gate, to reception and cleaning staff were most friendly and helpful. The bathrooms were clean, however the shower cubicles are extremely small. Big guys will find them a really tight squeeze. We unfortunately didn't see any cats on the game drives. The Sonnenrust 4x4 route yielded the best game viewing for us. The park is small, and we managed to drive all roads in our 2 night stay, with the Northern part of the part produsing the most game. An overall great experience and we will definitely be back.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 4, 2024
- dyan bCape Town Central, South Africa86 contributionsFind your inner peace in this space! The accommodation in the rest camp is very comfortable. Lovely hot shower! There are also 2 short walking trails in the rest camp which are worthwhile doing. The Black Eagle Trail (2.5km) and the Imbila Trail (1km). The vast expanse of open veld, fresh air and silence make this a special place to find peace in nature. I highly recommend both the Cheetah Tracking and the Morning Walk. Both give one an excellent opportunity to see most of the game, especially if you don’t have a 4x4 vehicle. Tumelo was the guide for both outings and his knowledge and expertise were excellent. I will definitely be returning to this park!Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten July 14, 2024

Mountain Zebra is a beautiful park with scenic mountain views. It is a very well maintained park. The chalets are clean and well equipped. The restaurant is the best we've experience in any of the national parks and I will highly recommend it. Excellent Karoo birding spot. Mountain Zebra is definitely worth a visit.

This is one of our favourite SANPARKS game reserves. It is impeccable, well maintained, has a variety of game and we enjoy the picnic spots. We overnighted at the main rest camp - in a chalet far away from reception with a view. Our two-bedroom chalet was comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped. Everything was spotlessly clean and well maintained: the kitchen, lounge, stoep and braai. Most crockery and cutlery appeared new! We appreciated the excellent service and friendliness from all the staff. We enjoyed two meals at the restaurant at the rest camp – generous portions, quality ingredients and excellent prices. Ideal as the perfect base to explore the game reserve for a few nights.

For those that are frustrated about the zoo-like experience of Kruger National, this park returns one to the silence, the seclusion, the chirps of birds, the rustle of leaves and the cricks of crickets that we hark back to, yearn for. The terrain is exquisite offering ipod-shuffle views aplenty. The landscape is rolling and flat and windy and smooth and dirty giving one a unique experience. The game differs somewhat from Kruger which is simply lekker. there are cats but unique buck too.
The rest camp pool was simply sublime, and its positioning and design set me to relax immediately.
The unit in which i stayed, a family unit was a wee tacky. The interiors could be so much more even on a budget. Bathroom tiling ill tiled, the kitchen fit out is pretty domestic if not rudimentary. The soap bar didn't have the SANPARKS sticker, that bothered me.
I did appreciate the dstv connected tv, i'm sorry to say it, but i liked it.

We stayed three nights during our holiday from the UK at one of the family cottages, ate twice at the restaurant, did our own game drives, and took two ranger guided drives, one at sunset, and one at night.
The game viewing was great and the ranger was very friendly and informative - our first view of aardwolf.
The accommodation is comfortable and well serviced without being luxurious.
We ate well enough at the restaurant, despite load shedding, and the service was friendly and prompt enough.
Our twin boys enjoyed the outdoor pool.

We went here for my partners Birthday and thoroughly enjoyed out stay. The different ecosystem and abundance of wildlife was incredible. We did an early morning safari and saw a lot. The guide was very passionate about his job, which made it even better. The accommodation is very comfortable and clean. We had a lovely Braii under the stars with the sounds of the bush. At the time we visited, we were in the midst of covid pandemic and they took a lot of precautions and made us feel very safe.

Mountain Zebra Park is in the Karoo in the Eastern Cape which can be a very arid area. When we last visited everything was brown and lifeless but in early 2020 there had been good rains and the area was lush and green. For those driving an ordinary car there are basically two loops. The Kranskop is challenging and requires good concentration. The unmade road takes you up one side of a deep valley with spectacular mountain views and at the far end the road bends sharply right and climbs up the other side of the valley and mountains. The views are even more spectacular and when you finally reach the top you are rewarded with a magnificent outlook over the Karoo and its flat-topped koppies. The views are amazing but animals are few. As you descend to join the Rooiplaat loop on the plateau there is a good selection of bok though often in the distance. A further game drive up here the next day did not include sightings of any more animals but the views continued to be stunning.
Accommodation was very good – we had one of the newer cottages which didn’t have the view of the older cottages but was well appointed. The restaurant has stopped serving breakfast and settled for brunch and dinner. Dinner was quite good and the shop has now been re-stocked and improved greatly from the last time we visited.

Beautiful scenery and family lodge beautifully positioned. Despite torrential rain, which caused flooding, the staff were helpful and friendly fixing everything as fast as they could. Super impressed with the unit

This was our 1st visit and most enjoyable . About 10min drive if you staying in Cradock , which we were.
The guys at the gate were very friendly & chatty . Our 1st drive could not have started better as within 5mins of the gate at the 1st dam we saw 2 buffalo & a kudu. There are a few routes 1 can self drive , all on reasonable gravel roads , fit for any vehicle.
Saw lots of plein game like zebra , wildebeest , springbok , blesbok , red hartebeest eland a few buffalo & some cheetah. The cheetah siting was incredible as we watched it from a distance at 1st & it eventually crossed the road in front of us & stayed relatively close to the road after that for some great pics. The stars of the show were definately the ground squirrels , they entertained us on a few occasions & were not afraid of the car & caused a few roadblocks. Unfortunately we never spotted the lions
The overall impression of the Park was that it was well maintained , the Reception area/shop/restaurant were also neat , staff at Reception very friendly. Last but not least the scenery is spectacular with picnic spots along the way

Three great landscapes in one park meet a rich animal world! Very impressive to watch. Good binoculars are helpful and for real photography enthusiasts very good lenses. Early entry and the drive with the sun at your back are highly recommended. The guided tours must also be good because the evening game drive - for outside guests because the park closes much too early (7pm in summer, even 7am is much too late) - was fully booked. We'll do it next time because the park is definitely worth another visit at a different time of year. Very friendly staff at reception, who you only have to go to to pay after the tour has ended.

How is the road from cradock to the Mountain Zebra park ,dirt or tar?

How does Mountain Zebra National Park compare to Addo? We will be visiting from overseas with our 4 year old and have would love him to enjoy the day, not be bored if there aren't enough animals to see.
Written January 10, 2019
Addo would be a better option with a child. You can sit at a waterhole and be sure that the elephants will come and drink!
