The lake is a gem squeezed in between two impressive mountains, the significant Loser and the steel Tresselwand. It has a nice view of the Dachstein glacier in the far background. There is a ca. 8 km easy walking trail around the lake. The village of Altaussee is picturesque with its traditional wooden houses and characteristic architecture. It is much more laid-back than for example St. Wolfgang and does not try hard to sell you things that you do not need. The lake is on the cold side but in recent years has been warm enough to swim in for much of the summer. Unfortunately, recently one of Austria's richest man has built some oversized holiday apartment complex and another one a tacky restaurant, so I recommend that you visit before outsiders manage to ruin the place.

This is such a beautiful lake and the fact you can walk around it in just 7,5km makes this an advice for everybody to make that walk. You will not regret it. Awesome sights and if you wish you can eat or drink something halfway. Even children can do this walk starting from age 3-4.

This lake has a circular walk with fantastic views. The complete walk takes less than 2 hours. If you don’t want to walk too far, you can travel back from the far side of the lake on a pretty boat (8 Euros adult fare). There is also quaint cafe on the far side of the lake “See Wiese”. We stopped there for some tea and cake (also serves gluten free cake!), very tasty.
Great afternoon out.

i base myself normally around the wolfgangsee and visit various lakes from there. we went to altaussee the other day and this is now near the top of my list for beautiful lakes. it is very picturesque and the walk around it is very pleasant. it is 8 kms around so a time of around 2 hours should be allowed. the walk is a mixture of shaded wooded trails and open paths.
despite what is said in the previous review, there is plenty of parking available, even if a little busy the closer you are to the village centre. and i would not class it as touristy.

This lake is a small lake in an area of beautiful lakes. It’s too touristy for its size to be enjoyable and the landscape is not a pretty as nearby alternatives like Traunsee or Hallstatt. There are also limited food and parking options.

There is a large boat in which tourists can be shown around the lake - however this isn't what we did. A friend of ours had arranged with one of his friends, to take us out on the lake in his boat. It was just a small boat, electric motor and one paddle on the side. It was quite a beautiful little vessel but I'm not very boat-minded so couldn't say its specific name.

So on with the review! This is a beautiful lake. On a great day like the day we visited, it looks even more beautiful! However, the real appreciation comes when you're actually in the middle of it. There were 6 of us on the boat, with our friend steering the boat like it was an extension of his body!

The lake is huge. It's massive. It's also very open, making it breathtaking to just sit back, look all around and take it all in. I've attached images to this review, hopefully they'll give another perspective to the lake that hasn't already been shown. It also revealed various species of fish living in the lake.

When we came back to shore, the shallower water is very clear, which just amplifies the beauty. We were dropped off while two friends took the boat back to the boathouse, so we decided to walk round to meet them. There's a lovely little bridge over a stream running into the lake. The stream is crystal clear and full of trout - very interesting to watch.

There is ample parking, a children's play area, very clean public toilets and tennis courts. There were plenty of people going for a swim in the shallower parts of the water.

This is a beautiful lake, in a breathtaking setting, it's too good to miss!

Altaussee is close to the Loser Panoramastrasse and can be combined in one visit. It is really nice to have a walk around Altaussee and there is also possibilty to take a ship ride. You have to pay for the parking there but I could not figure out how it works as i inserted a 2 euro coin at 4PM and it give me a parking ticket that was valind until 9AM next morning. May be have a good look at the description placed on the parking machines there. There was a small playing ground for children and some nice restaurants were at walking distance.

so lovely - worth a look and a swim for sure - I couldn't believe how beautiful and refreshing this lake was - who knew Austria had such beauty hidden in it's mountains!
