The entire nearby area is very beautiful, including the famous Topliz lake where crates of fake international currency printed by the Reich to weaken the economies of various countries were found. In the nearby Grundlsee lake, the remains of a prototype rocket to be sent to New York, Germany's secret weapon, were found. The film Monument Men was filmed here in the Steinberg salt mines because thousands of paintings and statues were buried inside, which the Germans wanted to blow up because they were now unable to transport them elsewhere. The Allies were close to Salzburg. The miners mocked the SS by replacing the bombs with other identical shapes locked in crates. When the timer gave the order to explode, nothing happened but the Germans were now on the run. The environment is welcoming, well kept and the explanations cover every question. Not to be missed especially for young people.

It's a bit of a challenging drive up narrow winding roads but worth the effort. It was a rainy day so this was a good inside adventure. We used our Salzkammergut cards for a discount - $25eu for the two of us. We received devices with earphone for Tour guide in English as we were the only English speaking members of the large (70) group. Lots of young children as well as oldsters like us. Tour begins with 750 meter hike up gentle incline at a pretty good pace so be prepared for a bit of effort. Also, dress warmly as even with the provided jackets and trousers it's pretty chilly in the mine. This 90 minute tour is well done and the performance at the end is beautiful. The slides are fun!

After hearing some-one else say, no, I'm not going there, I only use sea salt, we went there anyhow to learn the tale of the origins of the salt-mines in the ancient mountains of Austria. Graphic explanations, multimedia shows, miners slides and gaining a real appreciation of the toils of the historic miners who allegedly mined salt here seven thousand years ago! A very capable bilingual guide took us in 300 metres into the mountain and then about 250 metres below the surface. We saw a salt lake in the mountain and slide down the slides from one level to the next, just as the miners used to.

We were contemplating between which one to visit, this or Hallstatt. We decided to go to this one instead yesterday as it is less expensive & seems less touristy. We drove there from Ebensee using Google map & it took about an hour through a remote area that led us to wonder if we were on the right track.
We went for the last tour at 3pm & were the only one there. Luckily the guide spoke English. My little ones were almost 4 & 5. We quickly don on the clothes given to us & followed the guide into the tunnel. It's a walk of 700m in & 700 m out which is doable for us. My little girl can hike for 3 hrs. Shortly into the fast-paced walk, we had to stop to re-tie my girl's pants which dropped. Our guide told us to hurry up & explained that there is a next tour. We know that to be untrue. So, my husband carried my 14kg girl all the way & we followed the guide (who just kept on walking quickly without turning back to check on us) in a fast pace.
There were 4 stations where the guide would stop & briefly explain the workings of the mine. After a brief video, we were taken to the slide which doesn't look as Long as the one in the poster. My 5-yr old boy was so excited that he went on his own first. It was an exciting ride! There was another longer slide & was equally fun. We were then seated on a lake to watch a video before walking back out.
The whole tour took exactly 1 hour including donning on the clothes given which is shorter than the 90 mins that people usually advised so I guess ours was indeed fast & we realised why later. The guide was rushing to go back because by the time we came out, his car was gone.
It would have been a much more pleasant tour if the guide were to show more interest & if we were not rushed. Everything felt very transactional: go in, walk quickly behind the guide, stop, listen, sit down, watch, walk out. Nevertheless, it was an interesting experience for us to learn about salt mining which we intend to research more on & especially the slide!

Like a previous reviewer, I was on the last tour of the day, and the guide had not been told that I was an English speaker. Asking at the desk if the tours were bilingual, I was told yes, and so did not receive an audio guide, even though I was the only English speaker in the group. Unfortunately, due to the guide having an extremely strong accent and the inconsiderate native speakers who resumed talking while he was attempting to speak to me in English, I could understand less than a quarter of the words. The English version is also heavily abbreviated compared to the German. Aside from this there is little to actually see in the mine, and the 'multi media' presentation and show at the end are, at best, primitive. It might possibly be a place to go to avoid the rain, but my advice would be to get wet and save 18 EUR.

Most tourists do a short almost "Disney-like" trip down the mine. But once a week or so they run a 4-hour archaeological trip for a limited number of people which gives you a much more comprehensive view of what has happened here over the immense time period of around 5000 years.

We learned tgat there are 3 such sakt mines in salzburg area, and we chose this one as it was closer to where we stayed. It is a nice experiences, but nothing spectacular.
The whole scene of dressing at the white overalls and stepping deep into the salt mine is nice ... We liked the wooden slides taking you from level to level and also liked the whole WW2 story about keeping the artistical treasurers by the nazis inside the mine.
All at all, worth a visit but nit breathtaking ..

We arrived in good time for the next tour. Tours begin typically every hour on the hour.
Once we had our tickets, we could enjoy the surrounding scenery. There's a great view looking at Mount Loser. The tour begins with getting dressed up as a miner. The walking is along flat paths. A highlight is seeing where the Nazis stored stolen artwork.
Our guide was a local student made the tour in German and English most competently.

We are in our 70’s and still were amazed by this experience. We even did the really long slide at 32.8 kms per hour. We had a fabulous guide who explained how the salt mines have been operating from the Bronze Age to the present day. Who would have believed that! And the mine itself was really well set up with short films explaining how the salt deposits got there in the first place and how the miners through the ages have mined the salt and how important it has been as a trading commodity. We are so glad we did this tour. And the town itself is stunningly beautiful. A day well spent.

Hallstatt is better to reduce walking,
Altaussee is better if you are happy to walk, and special interest in the Nazi era.
