I made a two day solo trip to Chopta and after doing Tungnath/Chandrashila trek on first day, I had half a day in spare before starting my journey back. I asked my host if he can drop me to Saari village from Chopta as I had read very good reviews of Deoriatal trek. It took us around 1 hour by car from Chopta to Saari and my host talked to a local shop owner to keep my luggage with them.
I started my trek at around 7 AM and I was the first person to start the trek at that time. Most people stay at Ukhimath or Chopta and do a day trip to Saari for the trek so they start a bit later in the day. The trek is moderate, definitely more difficult than Tungnath/Chandrashila trek. It says 2.5 Kms but I think the overall trek is around 3-3.5 Kms at least. At normal pace it would take around 2 hours to reach the top. I tried to take a couple of shortcuts into the forest but got lost and had to come back. I would advise not to take shortcuts unless you have a local with you.
The view from the top is just mesmerizing. Especially when you are the only one there. You can see the reflection of Chaukhamba mountain in the lake and with all the lush greenery, it looks magical. There is also a small watchtower there which you can climb to get a better view of the mountain ranges in front of view. You can also walk through the tree cover surrounding the lake and can circle the lake on foot.
The entire area is very clean and there is also a guard there which will charge you 150 Rupees per person to enter the lakeside area. Not sure how official is that but there is a board from Uttarakhand Tourism explaining the breakdown of the charges so I think it is legit.
If you are a photography enthusiast then you will find a lot of great shots here. Don't forget to bring your DSLR. You can easily spend 3-4 hours here just to soak in the natural beauty of this place.

Well worth the 2.5 to 3 hours climb/trek on the way up from Sari village. It's not a walk! One would like to linger for hours at the taal and the return down takes about 45 minutes or more. The views are mesmerizing and the lake has all the enigma one expects of the yaksha taal of Mahabharata, that it is presumed to be. A guide is not required but Mr Negi, whom we found at the starting point (shop opposite the entrance to the trek), kept us entertained all through, pointing out all the precious herbs, medicinal plants, wildflowers and the peaks on the way up. The parikrama of the lake can also take 20 minutes.
Tip : If one wishes to see the reflection of the mountain peaks, including Chaukhamba, in the pristine waters, one must reach up by 11. After 12.30 the peaks are almost always covered in clouds, obstructing the reflection.

Deoria Tal in Uttarakhand is a hidden gem with crystal-clear reflections of the Chaukhamba peaks in its serene lake. The easy 2.5 km trek from Sari village is short yet rewarding, offering peaceful nature, lush greenery, and stunning views. It’s perfect for camping, stargazing, and those seeking tranquility away from the crowds.
The calm waters and surrounding forests create an idyllic setting for nature lovers and photographers. A quiet, offbeat destination, Deoria Tal offers a refreshing escape from the hustle of everyday life, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring Uttarakhand's beauty.

A lot to travel before you reach the soul taking place. Better you take some horse (if you can not track for about 2 hrs to reach this place) and have the lightest baggage with you. Just some water and good shoes.
this place takes your breath away. I did not have an opportunity to stay, but if I could, I would have taken the camps for a night. Some amazing pics, and peace.
Reach in the morning time, max by 11/12 and comeback by 4/5 (3 hrs of the track - 1.5 to 2 hrs to heights and 1 hr to come back). Food is available just before and some shops on the route. but do not be dependent :)
A good camera and a good pair of shoes is recommended. It's a little chilly so better be prepared with your jacket.

This is a fantastic place away from all city noise and pollution.
A peaceful, serene and calm place to rejuvenate.
We visited and halted at the campsite here on our Chopta-Chandrashila trek.
April to November would be a great time to visit.

I stayed at Sari village because that's entry point of Deoria Taal. Track of Deoria taal is beautiful but little tough. on the way, there is a shiva temple.. it is so beautiful and peaceful that you feel blessed.
I reached Deoria taal at around 12 Noon. Views are beyond words. you can watch snow clad mountains for hours and never want to come back..
Simply Awesome and Heaven like feeling.

Visited Deoria Tal on 21 Jan 2015 and stayed there for 3 days and 2 nights and had a really great time except for couple of things that I will definitely mention at the end of the review.
Deoria Tal is locate in Rudraprayag district of Uttrakhand and can be reached after a 2.3 km uphill trek from the villages of Sari. For those travelling in their own conveyance Sari is an 8-9 km drive from Ukhimath and around 20-25 km from Chopta. For the once travelling in public conveyance there are shared taxies operating from Ukhimath to Mastura, located at distance of around 1.5 km from Sari.
Deoria Tal offers a splendid view of Chopta, Tungnath and Chandrashila peak to the right but the real highlight of the trip is the breathtaking view of mountains like Chaukhamba, Nilkantha, Bandarpunch, Kedar Range, Kalanag to the left.
Apart from splendid view on both sides other prime attraction is the wild life. Deoria Tal is located in the Nanda Devi Biodiversity Park and has an abundance of colourful birds and mammals. During my stay I saw a lot beautiful birds and was able to photograph some of them. Foxes are a common sight around the lake and if a visitor is willing to spend time in the forest adjoining the lake he or she might get lucky and get glimpse of more elusive animals. I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of and photograph a pair of fox like mammals with slim body and furry tails running around on tree tops.
In Sari I stayed at Trilok Tourist Lodge. Owner of the lodge Mr. Bharat Bhatt is a good host and offers cheap, neat and clean accommodation in Sari. He also acts a tourist guide and can be contacted for organising trekking and camping expeditions to Chopta, Tungnath and Chandrashila and many more.
I will also like to thank Shailander, my host at Deoria Tal. For authentic and tasty Gharwali dishes he is the man to bank upon.
Now, the not so bright side of the trip:
1- During my stay I witnessed rampant forest fires around the national park also right under the nose of Uttrakhand forest department. Forests are being intentionally set on fire either by local villagers or forest mafia. I’m sure that these were intentional fires because forest fires are not natural for this part of the year and more importantly unlike pine, the natural vegetation (banj and buras, local names) in this area are not prone to fires in summers let alone in winters.
I would request all the future visitors to take up the issue with concerned authorities (I have already done that) or at least try spread awareness about such reckless acts among locals in case they encounter similar unpleasant sights.
2- There are a lot of idiots who visit this beautiful place just to drink and it is because of the irresponsible acts of these idiots, apathy of the forest department and short sightedness of the locals operating tourist lodges and camps in Deoria Tal forest is littered with plastic bottles, emptied bags of chips and namkeens.
I would like to request all the visitors to be more responsible and ensure that we just leave behind our footsteps and take along with us nothing except photographs and memories.
At the end some useful contacts:

Oct 2015 • Family
We were 2 families (4 adults 4 children) in 2 cars, SX4 and Zen Estillo. Started one day before Dussehra on 21 October 2015. Started from Noida at 6:30am. Reached Roorkeee in breeze 2.5 hrs. After that took a stop of 1.5 hrs in Haridwar (bathe and food). Reached Rishikesh by 12:30pm. There was lot traffic between Roorkee and Haridwar and then between Haridwar and Rishikesh. The road till Muzzarnagar is toll road and 4 lane. However after that 4 laning is till being done. But for practical purposes the road is still 2 lanes only. After Rshikesh, the traffic was less and we reached Srinagar by 4:30pm without break in between. Stayed at GMVN TRH. Not a good option to stay. Maintenance is poor. In the evening enjoyed the banks of river Alaknanda. It has been developed now.
The next we started from Srinagar at 8:10 am after breakfast. Filled the car with petrol from nearby HP petrol pump. From there we took the following route to reach Sari (Saari) Village. Srinagar->Rudraprayag->Kund->Ukhimath->Saari. Took us 4 hours. The road was good and the riven Mandakani stay all throughout with us till Kund. At some places the road was being repaired and it is mostly narrow but driveable. Once you reach Augustmuni (Agustmuni) and just after crossing the main central market, you get the first views of the top of Chaukhamba just visible behind the near by hills. That first view of snow-covered peaks of Chaukhamba peeking from behind the nearby hills is really mesmerizing. The feeling you get when for the first time you see your dream mountain in front of your eyes is unforgetfull and spell bounding. This feeling you will not get even from Deoriya Tal from where Chaukhamba is just 30kms as the crow flies. After Augustmuni Chaukhamba disappears but you start seeing mount Kedar all throughout the route till Kund. From Kund we continue right towards Ukhimath. The left route towards the bridge over Mandakani goes to Kedarnath. This road from Kund to Saari is a link between Kedarnath and Badrinath. It meets Chamoli/Gopeshwar on the Badrinath route through Chopta. After 8 KMs from Ukhimath, we take a left U turn up towards Saari Village and leave this road going to Chopta.
We reach Saari/Sari village by 12:10 am. We were met there by our guide and camp organizer Surendra Singh Negi. We parked our cars on the roadside for the night. It is pretty safe. Surendra Singh Negi was kind enough to take some to carry luggage and act as porter also. In Saari you can take some refreshments in the restaurants or Dhabas. And also arrrange for mules or porters. There are no shops or dhabas enroute to Deoriya Tal. So carry water bottles. However at the end of the trek there are a few dhabas by the villagers. For the trek you do not need a guide since it is paved all the way upto Deoriya Tal. But it is steep 2.3 kms (as stated on the board at the entrance of the trek). However I think it is 3 kms trek. It is steep and mid way there are benches for taking rest with beautiful view of the valley below towards Saari. Surendra left with our bags to make arrangements for lunch in his dhaba at Deoriya Tal. His shack is 100 mtrs before the trek end. We need to take a right path through the forest to reach his shack. There is arrangement of staying at night there also and he has built a Indian toilet also there. It took us 3 hrs to reach his shack. We had 4 children of ages 7 and 8 yrs and we rested at many places on the way. And we are not trekkers. The trek was tough since it is steep but taking sufficient rest at various places, we still managed to do it in 3 hrs. The phone signals (airtel and idea) will come and go during the trek. But theey will work at the enterance of the Tal. But not at the Tal itself. Surendra Singh Negi came to meet us where the trek cuts right towards his shack and guided us. You get a beautiful view of Chaukhamba from his dhaba which overlooks the lake through the dense forest. We had a lunch (rice and dal). Then it was downhill all the way to Deoriya Tal. It was evening and the sun was about to set. The mountains were white in the sunlight and soon started to turn red as the sun started to set. It as slightly brezy and the lake did not reflect the mountains due to breeze. Surendra had setup 2 tents for us (Quechua, 3 xl). It was enough for a family of 4 to sleep. These tents had sleeping mats and 4 sleeping bags.
Earlier in the afternoon at Saari Village, Surendra told us that it wont be cold at night. So we left a few jackets of our children in the car. But sleeping bas were 20 degree C bags. But it was cold at night at 4-6 degrees C! But we slept comfortably in the tents. We were carrying our own torches and solar lanterns.
We enjoyed the views of the sunset over Chaukhamba and Kedar. At night Surendra Singh Negi arranged for a bon fire and dinner at the camping site itself. There were about 20 others tents that night. The moon 3/4 shining and the sky was clear and mountains started to glow in the silvery light of the moon. A few people joined us at the bon fire. We stayed awake for a few more hour but by 9:30pm were in our tents sleeping.
Next morning we wake at 5:30am. It was still dark and sky was lit by billions of stars and moon had set and dawn started breaking by 6:00am. The mountains started to shine white in the early sunlight. Soon they started to turn yellow/red as the sunlight started touching them at the peaks. The reflection of the mountains in the peaceful lake was spellbounding.
After enjoying the sights we went to Surendra's dhaba at around 10:00am. Refreshed ourselves there and had a breakfast of paranthas.
We need to do nature's calls (Toilet) in the nature around surrounding forest at the lake. However you can go towards the entrance of the Tal where there are a few dhabas. There is one dhaba from Umeid Singh. He has toilet and charges Rs. 50 per person. We had Surendra's shack for it.
We started for the downhill trek and reached Sari/Saari village in about 1 hr 45 mins. From there we went to Dugalbitta to stay for nights at Alpine Adventure Camp.

Deoria Taal also known as Devaria' or ‘Deoriya’ is lake located in on the Ukhimath-Chopta road in Uttarakhand. It is at 2,438 m (7,999 ft). The place is gaining lot of popularity offlate in all kinds of vistors due to easy approachable roads and far from city life. It also considered on route in many treks.

From Ukhimath, one can trek to Deoria Taal (7 km approx) else can Self drive or take local taxi/vehicle to drop to Sari Village. From Sari village, one need to walk on foot to Deoria tall which is approx 3 km. Though distance is small, the trek is created by putting uneven stones of varying sizes and ascend is extremely steep. It take almost 1.5-3 hrs to reach Deoria Taal depending upon Individual fitness level and offer good amount of fatigue.
Experience/location
Deoria Taal is located at 8000 feet and gives you excellent view of snow laden Himalaya peeks (in Winter at least in time I visited). There is almost no pollution and plenty of pure oxygen to make your lung realize what poison they are breathing in Indian cities. Lake is much smaller in size as compare to pictures and offer various hues depending upon time and angle of view. It is still maintained as per Indian standards but certainly not poster child for swatch bharat. Water is muddy and green when you view it in Sunlight but offer extremely blue hues when watch against sunlight and offer excellent shadows of mountain, trees etc which is photographers paradise and opportunity for amateurs to improve their skills as well. There are plenty of photographic opportunity for selfies and others. There is man made tower where you can hop on to get best view of Himalayas peaks. Overall, very serene place with less human intervention and on path of various treks routes.
Points to note/Tips
1. There is no electricity in region (YES in 2018) so prepare for experience without cripping and better to bring your torches for night out (if you plan one) and extra power banks for mobile charging.
2. The mobile connection is also very scarce so plan accordingly though one can find few points where calls can be made to near and dears one but no internet connection so no insta or snapshot live stories or Facebook bragging or WhatsApp :). On positive side, this will help you in your digital detox as well.
3. There is only one decent hotel with name Magpie (Offer rooms and various facilities but half an km from taal) and all others are either make shift tents (using Aluminum sheets and around taal) or mostly Decathlon ones which is installed on need basis on taal itself but will have no bathroom facilities (Experience wholesome nature main fresh honge experience). Choose as per your need.
4. The entry fee is Rs 150/- per head for Indians and Rs 500/- for Foreigners. One can put his own tent in taal area but with fees which need to be paid to forest department (their office lies adjacent to taal). Extra charge for using Camera (DSLR).
5. The place is surrounded by forest but as per locals, there is very-2 less chances of encounter with wild animals so relatively safe.
6. I visited in 25th Dec time frame when Chopta was surrounded with good amount of Snow but Deoria taal has None.
7. The basic items like soda/cold drinks/chips etc are available in make shift shops but will be charged 150-200% of MRP so plan accordingly.
8. All vehicles parked in Sari village (If you plan overnight stay in taal area). So, put all luggage in vehicle and only bring essentials to Deoria taal. As described earlier, trek route is tortures for amateurs and old so better keep you luggage light and planned in advance will help.
9. The last alcohol shop is 25 km before Chopta and there is none in Chopta/Sari village/deoria taal so again plan accordingly.
10. Winter temp ranges around -2 to 6-10 deg depends on days and condition but cold by all standards so bring warm clothing especially if you plan to stay in make shift tent.

Written June 6, 2019
We are planning to visit around May end / June 1st week. Kids are aged between 5 and 10. Is it fine and safe to stay in the tents? Any precautions or things to know before we pack?
Thanks a ton ! :)

I had stayed in Magpie camp tents in Chopta (DuggalBitha), and they were good enough. They had attached bathroom, good beds and bedding. Do carry the non-meal eatable for the kids, as they may be difficult to get at times. Also, carry required medicines as well.
You can see/follow Chopta videos on the DesiWnderers youtube channel to get a visual idea.
