Leaving Ayodhya at about 9 AM on 17th March by road we reached Allahabad (now known as Prayagraj) and went straight to Anand Bhavan where first Prime Minister of India lived for a long time. In fact now there are 2 large posh buildings spread over an area of about 50 acres, besides a planetarium. The old building now known as Swaraj Bhavan has an interesting history as it was known to have been built in the late nineteenth century by a Muslim landlord and it was named Mahmood Manzil. Later a judge of high court owned it and from him Pt Motilal Nehru, a prominent lawyer during British Raj purchased it at a cost of 14000/- rupees and renamed it Anand Bhavan (an abode of relaxation and peace). In 1930, when Motilal Nehru got involved in freedom movement, he left the old building for party activities and constructed another building with modern amenities for the use of his family and that is now known as Anand Bhavan. Now Anand Bhavan is a museum housing old furniture objects, dresses and personal items besides photographs of that time used by Nehru family. There is a meeting room besides a bed room used by Motilal Nehru. Rooms used by Jawaharlal Nehru, his wife, Kamla Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi are also open for public view. There is also a meeting room which was used by Mahatma Gandhi whenever he used to visit Allahabad. Behind Anand Bhavan is a sprawling double story mansion now known as Swaraj Bhavan and it is known to have been donated to the Govt of India by Indira Gandhi. However, it was closed due to lunch time. I do not think that this place is of much historical importance but it shows how the aristocrats and rich gentry used to live at that time. The Anand Bhavan's main attraction is its well maintained garden and planetarium which is the first building as one enters the campus from the main gate. The tickets for the visit are expensive, 70/- rupees per head and for foreigners the tickets would cost 500/- rupees or about $7.0. Since it was our first visit to Allahabad and Anand Bhavan is associated with two prime ministers of India we just wanted to visit it but feel that tickets should be moderately priced.

This is a must visit place. It is the home of the father JN Nehru who was prime minister of India. It's a beautiful charming estate and the artifacts of the Nehru family are wonderfully preserved. There are also rooms full of old historic photographs which I was in an awe after seeing them....loved visiting this place

The monument is good and worth visiting. But it was raining and there is no shelter near the ticket booth as well as the open walkway from the gate to the main building. So we got drenched and we could not fully enjoy the experience.
At least during rainy season every year, the authorities should put up some tempoarary covering near the gate and ticket booth and also on the open driveway from the gate to the main building - to protect the visitor from rains.

Anand Bhavan was a delight due to its heritage and history. One goes through the house and gets a feel of history at India's early years of independence and before. The building is maintained so well as are the grounds !!
Well worth

For those interested in History, this is a must see place in Prayagraj or Allahabad. The house was built by Motilal Nehru where Jawaharlal Nehru was born. The museum is well maintained and the premises kept very clean. All the rooms with objects are well maintained as if someone is staying there even today. There is a huge lawn with rose garden. The Planetarium is also located in the large and vast premises. Overall wonderful experience.

Its quite green surroundings with lots of collections, memorabilia of Gandhi family. Well themed, designed and maintained. Great to see pics and memorabilia 100 years old. Reminiscent of old times and family legacy is nicely depicted. Worth a visit for relaxed and historical importance.

This is by far one of the most important houses during the Indian Independence movement. Many ideas and movements were born out of this house. The Nehru's lived a life of splendour and that can be seen even now as this house has been converted into a museum. The Swaraj Bhawan located next door built much later is also worth a visit. Definitely worth recommending even if you are not interested in the Indian Independence movement.

Worth watching. Few rare photographs of the Nehru family. The congress working commitee office. Indira Gandhi's wedding photos, room where she stayed. Mahathma Gandhi's stay. Dining articles, fans, lighting of the pre-independence era are all on display. Good books are for sale also.

The rooms are well preserved, giving an idea about the history making process when India gained independence.

It is ancestral house of Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru –the first Prime minister of India, who gave initial boost to India’s progress. Purchased by his father Pt Moti Lal Nehru and then donated by Indira Gandhi to Jawaharlal Lal Nehru trust in1970, which converted it into the present day museum. I had been to Allahabad, many times but visited Anand –Bhawan for the first time. The building is not very big, but it had witnessed many of the greatest movement and planning for Indian freedom struggle, Topmost Indian personalities Like Mahatma Gandhi,Jawahar Lal Nehru, and many others use to congregate here and make plans for Swaraj .So old Anand Bhawan is known as Swaraj Bhawan.
It is located at a distance of about 3.5 Kms from the Allahabad Junction railway station .Its OPENING TIMEINGS are between 9 Am to 5 PM with weekly closing of Monday. On entering you have to pass through security check up. Just in front, is a big piece of stone with inscription on it .In front you’ll see a big and beautiful lawn with two paths around it. We took to right one and reached at the entrance .Building is a two-storied building painted in light grey and cream colours .Purchased Rs.10 ticket for viewing the first floor. Lower floor is free. Today was holiday, so groups of children were there with their escort teachers. In front we saw a place where Mahatma Gandhi ji use to lie down in open space. Then there was a library cum-meeting hall. On proceeding further, we saw personal items used by Pt Motilal Nehru,Jawahar Lal Nehru. Smt Indira Gandhi ji etc. All exhibits were covered by glass panels. Ground floor also has many exhibits used by Nehru family. Then we descended down through steps and went to see the Swaraj- bhawan. Here is a book store with many books regarding Gandhi ji and Nehru family and on some others. From here I purchased two books. Overall experience was very pleasant and informative about India’s freedom struggle. A must visit place of the Allahabad city.
