We visited Mahabalipuram on our trip to Pondicherry. Arjuna's Penance is located on the main road on the way to Pancha Rathas. Amazing carvings created on huge rocks.

The most beautiful monument in Mahabalipuram with gorgeous carvings. You can see it for free from outside. The carvings are huge and beautifully detailed. Do carry a cap and water.

Awesome and magnificent monoliths carved out of huge mountains! When you say Mahabalipuram, it is this sculpture that immediately comes to mind... This is free for travellers to see... Arjuna in skinny stature in deep penance on his single feet, surrounded by the famed elephant sculptures!!! This is the magnum opus of the entire town, to say the least!

Its was built during 6bc. Beautiful cravings of creatures, nature, people, god, goddess and much more. Try to visit the place early in the morning before 12 noon or in the evenings between 4-6 pm due to heat of the sun. Also apply sunscreen. Take snacks and drinks for the way.

This is a great place to amble around. We entered via a side gate so didn't see this until the end. Stunning craftsmanship.

Mahabalipuram's stone temples and reliefs are wonderful. Both nature and man give shape and soul to the landscape and you should not miss them.
