- Ajith SettyBengaluru, India2,034 contributionsEasy way to visit all monuments !!There are many monuments in Mahabalipuram and here is a easy and better way to visit them. You can start near Krishna's butter ball. Parking is available nearby. Not very spacious one but manageable. The entry ticket is 40/- for Indians and we can visit all the monuments with the same ticket. The list of monuments is as below (all within walking distance ) Krishna's butter ball Trimurti cave Ganesha ratha Arjuna's penance Pandavas Cave Krishna mandpam Other 2 places are located within 1-2 kms from this place. Pancha Rathas Shore Temple All the monuments close at 6pm except for Shore temple which is open till 9 pm.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 19, 2023
- Ria1104Kolkata (Calcutta), India674 contributionsNice Monuments Depicting Pallava ArchitectureThe monuments of Mahabalipuram are truly great examples of Pallava architecture. These monuments were actually curved out of single rocks and that also with ancient equipments. These monuments are located pretty close to one another and are basically walkable. Found many people parking their four wheelers around Pancha Rathas or Shore Temples and covering the other monuments by foot. One can get a single ticket for all the monuments at any of the counters and use it to visit all the monuments for that day.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 28, 2023
- Nagaraju KBBengaluru, India23 contributionsAmazing sculpturesAn amazing place to see sculptures from the Pallava era. I was visiting this place after nearly two decades. Amazing to see the place has been done up so well thanks to the UNESCO heritage tag. Sad part is just outside the monuments we have so many shops and the traffic is nightmare. But the main monuments areas are beautiful and well maintained.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 29, 2023
- SunnyandBusterSeattle, Washington775 contributionsMust see on your travelsAn important stop on any South India travel itinerary. These monolithic granite carvings are extraordinary. You’ll see areas where it appears they were practicing different images and techniques before applying to the main rock which makes them feel more alive to me. Many sections weren’t completed but the artistry is extraordinary. Spread out over several acres it is a great way to spend a day. It is really astonishing to think about the effort applied to carve granite in such detail.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 15, 2024
- MaithiliSaveMumbai, India201 contributionsGood places to visitIt’s worth visiting this place. It is one of the monuments in Mahabalipuram temple area. We visited these monuments while going to Puducherry. It’s on the way from Chennai, Avoid public holidays. It was too crowded when we visited on local festival public holiday. We couldn’t take proper pictures. Do hire a guide to know the history and significance of these monuments. There are government authorized guides available. It will take around 2.5 - 3 hrs to visit all monuments I.e. Panch Rathas, Butter Ball, Shore Temple and Arjun’s Penance. Shire temple view was amazing at Sunset. Entry fee is just Rs40.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 17, 2024

Worthy Stop Between Chennai and Pondicherry. There are several parts of the site, both small, and you'll need a car to get among them unless you really like to walk. Can get hot. Be sure to get a guide -- really helps. These are ancient shrines and cave temples carved out of stone and are truly impressive. A visit takes around 2-3 hours.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 5, 2024

I recommend a guide therefore you can be driven to all 5 sights. Shore temple, 5 ranthas, arjuna penance, beach and the 2 lighthouses. I enjoyed and was amazed by how these were built 1500 yrs ago by the Pallava dynasty and are still intact.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 25, 2024

I have visited this place many times with my family before, because we lived in Chennai. Really beautiful things to see, but I was really disappointed with my last visit!
You have to pay for entering the area now, which is more than okay, but it is NOT okay that the price is x15 more expensive for “others” aka. tourists. The price is 40 rupees for Indians and 600 rupees for “others”, and... remember to bringer your cash because you can’t pay with credit card... very disappointed 😔
Would not recommend... No respect for their tourists

This is an incredible historic area with lots of sites to visit. It's a few hours drive from Chennai but well worth the visit. Only need about half a day here and easy to cover all the areas on foot.
There's lots of icons and deities and temples which are all intricately carved from the rock.
You don't really need a guide - just do a self tour - but a guide at the start can be helpful to explain what the images and icon mean if you don't have an understanding of Hindu Mythology and Indian history,
Take water and food in a rucksack as it gets very hot and you'll be there for a number of hours. There is not much shade so hats and suncream are a must. There are plenty of shops around selling drinks, snacks, gifts and stone or wood carved ornaments.
Must see!

Mahaballpuram now known as Mammalapuram is a small town situated about 350 kms from Bengaluru-a drive of 6 and half hours and 55 kms from chennai , a drive of one and half hours . Located on East coast road it has Unesco Heritage monuments of the Pallava dynasty of the 8th century. Best time to vist is Dec to Feb as it gets very hot in summers.
This beach town had a port in the past remnants of which remain the Lighthouse on top of a hill. The 3 main monuments located within 5 kms radius are 1. Shore temple 2. Arjuna Penance complex 3. Five Rathas. You need a vehicle to access these 3 different monuments-auto or taxi. Parking fee for vehicle is Rs 60 for a Taxi and entry fee is 40 per adult which can be used to see all 3 monument complexes. The Shore temple is the most famous. The main deity here is Shiva linga. Beach can be seen but not accessed from here. The Arjuna penance on 2 rock boulders depicts descent of ganges. Behind this monument lies the Famous Krishna"s butterball rock, Ganesha ratha, Varaha cave temple. On climbing some steps you get an arial view of Lighthouse. The Five rathas have a lot of histroy. Overall a worthwhile visit

Mahabalipuram is on the way to pondi from chennai. There are set of temples made of old & huge rocks and there is single entry ticket for all the temples. Do not buy another ticket as same one ticket is allowed in all temples & caves. It will take around 3-4 hrs to visit this place. If you like & keep interest in old architecture & history on sides of beach please visit else you can skip it. There is one attraction krishna butter ball one big rock is resting on short incline that is very strange and amazing to see.

Interesting and very old but - as usual with Indian treasures - badly looked after and you are never sure if the guide is ripping you off or not. It is old and fascinating with some amazing carvings and caves but pretty badly explained given its history and significance. The irritating problems are not difficult to sort out and make it a really special place. Interesting and worth a visit but the trip down in private hire (2,500), parking (75), entry tickets for 2 (1,200), guide (500) - lunch ...... it’s an expensive day out!

A group of five friends decided to visit this historical place, which gained prominence after photos of two world leaders were splashed all over the media.
However, our experience was just a mediocre monument, showcasing Hindu religious gods and goddesses. The structures were made out of bound of tourists. The structures from inside are too small for large crowds. Therefore, one can only take photos from outside. Sea waves take it's toll on the structure. Govt needs to renovate the pond in the front.
This site is good for history or archaeology students.

The group of monuments in Mahabalipuram is obviously well maintained ( given it's Unesco heritage tag ) & it is a tourist spot on the ECR that deserves a visit.
The best in the group is the Shore temple - it is a beautiful piece of art & obviously very very historic, though not gigantic in proportion but still very impressive.
We found the pancha-rathas slightly underwhelming & not worth the same attention - however there is an ancient lighthouse ( in fact there is a recently constructed one as well ) that should be visited.
A nice excursion from Chennai / stop over en route to Pondy.

There was nothing that made me feel special in whole of Mahabalipuram.
Mahabalipuram as a tourist destination is a collection of some ( may be 4 or 5 ) carved temples and carved rocks which will look new only if you haven't seen ANY OF the ancient sculptures like below (architecture, stone carvings etc). Mahabalipuram is less than 10% of these below.
Hampi, Belur, Halebeedu, Chitradurga, Melukote, Sharavana Belagola, Nanjanagoodu, Tirupathi, Kalahasthi etc.

It deserves and has a UNESCO World Heritage designation. Built around 600 CE, the most amazing part is that many of the structures are monolithic or built from one piece of stone. That's why it has survived the ravages of time well that and being buried for a long time in hiding. A must see for the area.

One parking ticket and one entry ticket for all the places in Mahabalipuram.
Amazing to know that all the monuments seen are just carved out of stones.
The seashore temple stands grand next to the sea attracting every tourist.
Panch rath ( 5 temples snd a huge elephant) all made out of a huge single stone excites one and all.
Arjun Tapas, 3 monkeys and the precariously positioned butter ball are all beautiful.
If you need a guide, you have to negotiate well for the charges.
A visit worth less than a couple of hours of drive from Chennai

I have also experienced the same (March 2023). Felt strange to pay fee to someone standing on the road to enter nothing! I wonder, is it a legitimate collection?

No. You may have to buy 2-3 tickets for different monuments. But at 1 spot there is a combo ticket- 5 rathas.
Yes in south India - Full dress for females- chudidar, slacks suits, saris skirts are required.
Perfect time is 8-9 am to 12 am ... so that its not hot and the sun is not at its peak.. many accomodations are there ranging from 1800 to 3500 rs

Try and make it to the top of the lighthouse... obviously not a monument... view is excellent.
The small museum/display near the lighthouse make sure the interactive displays are working before payng

What is the perfect time to reach Mahabalipuram? Is a day enough to see the places?
Written January 11, 2017
A day would be enough to see all the monuments and also relax for a while. Avoid visiting places there in the afternoon as it can be pretty hot. You can drive in the morning such that you reach by lunch time, get into a nice sea view hotel for lunch, visit the monuments, spend sometime on the beach and head back. Great place to spend evenings on the beach there.
