- AsheeshBhatHyderabad, India144 contributionsAvoid this place till the roads are repaired. The current detour is 55km longer with narrow and treacherous roads. It took 9 hours each way to cover 175 km. We were lucky. Others have taken 12-14 hours after getting stuck in traffic jams. Also, i strongly recommend staying here for 2 nights to really enjoy lachung. Travel agents recommend 1 night. But that's just very tiring. The trip from lachung to yumthang and zero point is 6 hours itself. And at that height it takes time to acclimatize. Even walking 10 steps will leave you breathless.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 2, 2024
- gauravs09Bengaluru, India498 contributionsFrom Lachung to Zero point is a good ride as it is scenic and you are literally on top of the world ; 16,000 feet !! Well managed by the army but can get crowded so leave early and reach early. Easy to rent boots / gloves and jackets on the way. You will almost see where Teesta river originates. Zero point itself will not get crowded but cars and pollution of Diesel vehicles can bother if you reach at peak time with most people. So best is to reach early.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 9, 2024
- ShantanooKolkata (Calcutta), India84 contributionsYume Samdong, also known as Zero Point, is a mesmerizing snow-covered valley located in North Sikkim, India, approximately 26 kilometers northeast of Yumthang Valley and accessible only with a special permit. Here's a more detailed look at Yume Samdong: Location: Situated along the Lachung River, Yume Samdong is 20 kilometers beyond Yumthang Valley. Accessibility: A special permit is required for entry, and only domestic/Indian tourists are allowed. It's a 2-hour drive from Lachung to Zero Point.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 22, 2025
- MIHIRDAKWALAAhmedabad, India104 contributionsZero point Sikkim stands at an altitude of 15,300 feet above mean sea level and is the last outpost of civilization. The road ends here!!! I have visited with 9 year old daughter and 70 years aged parents without any problems. Also witnessed snow fall .The drive from Yumthang Valley to Zero Point is through the curving mountainous amidst the rugged piece of land of geographic region and could be a lifetime experience. - Escape05714012284Bengaluru, India11 contributionsThis is a real paradise on the earth. And a must visit. Rented gum boots from a shop near to yumtang valley, this gives a good grip, when you venture out to snow. Luckily we experienced a light snow fall. Breath taking views of the mountains around. Maggi and hot tea there. Perfect place to get away from usual city chores.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 10, 2024

Zero point is an over hyped spot . If one has experience snow already then no point in wasting time and money on visiting this place. Snow is not very clean and deep. One has to cross slushy area and a stream to walk almost 200 meters to get snow . Elderly and children find it very difficult and many a times people come back in their vehicle only without getting down , weather is again a factor , very often it rains and snows , then it becomes impossible to get down from vehicle and enjoy .

It's a very very beautiful place and has a heavenly experience. Very wide area So even if there are a lot of people, it doesn't look crowded.. you can play and walk over in the snow. May face trouble breathing in that place, and it's very cold there, so please carry proper warm clothes, gloves mufflers etc. And don't go empty stomach... always carry water, and carry some dark chocolate, Better to visit the pace in the first half itself. On the way back you can visit Yumthang Valley and spend 1-2 hour over there.

No words can describe nature, the beauty and the feel of being @ top of snow.
One piece of advice...... One who has trouble of asthama or lungs issue should avoid unless he/she want an adventure.
Carry camphor tablets, smell them frequently and be much much hydrated. These will help as the place is with very less oxygen level.

It depends on the month of visit. In June first week, there was very little snow and not much to do. Few pics along the meandering river and you are done. Oxygen levels are ok and not faced any issue.

You first reach Yumthang valley from Lachung, but suggest to go to Zero Point first. Zero point is located at altitude of 14500 ft and oxygen is less. It is a plateau covered with snow. Altitude related sickness can be caused hence precautions need to be taken. Smelling Karpur (used for aarti/prayer), Chewing Adrak helps. Local also sells Pop-corn to mitigate altitude related sickness.

Last motorable road of India but dont expect anything much...
Great if you want to spend some time playing in the in snow and have some nice pics from picturesque backgrounds. No activities here.
Also at a higher altitude so cant exert much..so be prepared when coming with small children and senior citizens or ones with heart and blood pressure issues.

Distance & Time (approx.):

Lachung to Yumthang ~25 km (1.5 hr)
Yumthang to Zero Point ~ 25 km (1.5 hr)
Preferred Mode: Through Travel Agents ( For self-drive contact to travel agent for Inner Line Permits of persons and vehicle)
Present rate by travel agents for package tour (from Gangtok to Yumthang):
Reserved Taxi (2 Persons) ~ 8000 rupees
Reserved Taxi (4 Persons) ~ 9500 rupees
Shared Taxi (10 seats) ~ 1100 rupees per head
( The above charges includes transportation, accommodation and food etc. Extra charges for Yumthang to Zero Point is 2500 rupees per vehicle)
Overnight stay at Lachung. Lachung is a small city in north Sikkim, surrounded by high-rise mountains.
We started our journey from Lachung at 6:30 am. We were thrilled to find snow covered area before Yumthang. We stopped at Yumthang (~12000 Ft) for our Breakfast. Don’t expect anything more than bread, omlette, momo and tea at Yumthang. At 8:00 we started our journey from Yumthang to Zero Point (~15500 ft). Road abruptly ends at Zero Point. It was fully covered with thick layer of fresh snow. You can find snow here throughout the year. We were lucky to experience a fresh spell snow fall at Zero Point. But the chilly wind at sub-zero temperature was unbearable. Then the weather started to get worse. So we started our return trip. On that particular day, we experienced snowfall throughout our return journey from Zero Point and down to Lachung (~8000 ft). It was an experience of a lifetime…..

The Spectacular View of Zero Point, full with natural beauty and snow covered mountains. I have not seen such a beautiful place, though I have traveled many places including Europe. However Zero Point is more beautiful than some of the European places. There are different types of herbs and flowers can be found there. We thought of staying there for about an hour, however could not stand more than 30 minutes. The trip was really excellent with spectacular views. It was really great place and at such high altitude certainly few precautions needed to be taken, else the enjoyment turns into nightmare.
Therefore it is advised that all the travelers few things mentioned below, as suggested by the local people, to fight with the height/deficiency of oxygen related problems.
1. Please carry camphor, in case of breathless situation, inhale the camphor, which will help in breath easily.
2. Never be in empty stomach, if travelling in empty stomach, might feel giddiness and suffer from nausea.
3. Chew boiled black chickpea. this helps in keep the stomach full and supply of protein to the body much needed.
Since we were the first time visitor, we have learnt the above mentioned points by experiencing the situation. I will suggest all the travelers to follow the above mentioned points and be safe and enjoy the snow covered mountains.
