About
Discover endless opportunity at England's largest forest A visit to Kielder Forest will uncover many surprises. Get lost in the Minotaur Maze, discover the fascinating night sky or walk along the unique Lakeside Way, a 26 mile multi-use path around the lake which can be accessed from the visitor centre at Kielder Castle. Kielder Forest is also home to one of England's largest mountain bike trail networks. Kielder is a great place to see a variety of wildlife. From April to August, live camera footage is shown daily from Northumberland's only breeding osprey population which is now the largest natural colony in the UK with an impressive six nests per season. Although it's England's largest forest, Kielder is not just about trees. At any one time, a quarter of the area of Kielder is open space, including England’s largest area of blanket bog. Kielder is also England’s most important red squirrel reserve, home to the biggest remaining population of red squirrels in the country.

- epembertonNorth Yorkshire, United Kingdom385 contributionsPerfect for dog walkingWe absolutely love Kielder for dog walking, and visit whenever we’re in this part of Northumberland. There are so many trails to choose from, and any which are inaccessible are helpfully listed in the car park. £5 to park all day seems reasonable when there is so much forest to explore and enjoy!Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 25, 2024
- Liz MWhitley Bay, United Kingdom182 contributionsLoved our BBQRight from arriving we found the staff friendly and helpful. The lodges are comfortable, clean and warm with everything that you could possibly need and more. We loved the BBQ, especially as the weather was quite wet. There's nothing nicer than sitting on furs in the little hut with a fantastic BBQ to cook on. Must also mention the restaurant for its excellent food and superb staff.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 22, 2024
- Andrew FRoyal Wootton Bassett, United Kingdom11 contributionsOutstandingly good site. Very friendly staff. Excellent accommodation.Stayed in a lodge for a week and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The accommodation was lovely, excellently equipped and very comfortable. The activities onsite are varied and we really enjoyed the crossbow session (thanks Josh). The gym is well equipped. We treated ourselves to eating in the restaurant most nights, the food was very tasty and good value. Thanks go to the staff, Derek, Brandon, Dionne, Joanne, and chef. Sorry if I missed anyone, but the whole team were very welcoming and friendly. All staff throughout the site were nice and helpful. And this is a very dog friendly site. Our dog George was welcome in most of the site locations, including the restaurant. He had a great time too, with plenty of walks. One minor thing if I may suggest is to keep a log of who has the PS4 games, as the selection available was limited. But out of all similar sites we've visited, this is the best presented lodge we've stayed in. Really enjoyed our holiday and will definitely come back at some point.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 23, 2024
- qdodger9 contributionsMay in Keilder LodgesHad a lovely stay. Met by Jeff on reception lovely chap and really loved his job and appreciates the sunrises! ☀️ Lodge was lovely, clean comfortable and modern. We took dogs, x2 labs and was just enough space for all of us. Pool and day spa was added luxury plus the restaurant on site. We went as an adult group and were not surrounded by kids so perfect trip if you really want an escape. Unspoilt, traffic free. No village within 5 miles each way. The midges began to come out in the last day as weather warmed up a bit. They are fairly persistent so would strongly recommend fly stuff and tablets if bites affect you.Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 31, 2024
- GillyReigate, United Kingdom2 contributionsLovely easy walking including for disabledBeautiful area. Enjoyed the walks round the lakeside path with our two dogs. My husband is disabled and has a tramper and the tracks are perfect for him. Good car parks at either end of the north shore walk. Particular mention to the little Kielder general store by the community run self serve petrol pump (petrol good price but you need a card for chip and pin). Do not be put off by the appearance of the shop right by the garage. The fresh baguettes are truly freshly made, tasty and good value. Very friendly service too.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 3, 2024

Easy - experienced routes for both walking and biking. Several eating options all around the lake. Well worth a visit. No phone reception in most areas of kielder so you can fully switch off.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 20, 2024
- Sarahlee GKingston-upon-Hull, United Kingdom106 contributionsOtterstone spaWeve just spent a week in otterstone spa No 6 which was amazing. The view was stunning and the lodge itself has everything you could need plus ours had recently had both bathrooms renovated which was a nice bonus. The park itself is so quiet and beautiful there are so many walks around the resvoir to take with stunning views. There is a local shop on site which is good but I'd still recommend doing a big shop as there isn't any shops nearby or places to eat really. The pub onsite is OK, the service is really good but the food itself is just alright. Apart from the breakfast we had on check out day as this is the only day that it opens for breakfast which was a shame. We will definitely return though all staff were very friendly and Kielder forest is so lovely and very dark sky's perfect for star gazing.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 15, 2024

After parking in the reasonably priced Kielder Castle Car Park we headed for the Northern shore section of the Lakeside Way. Visited the fine Kielder Viaduct with its interesting history and design features before joining the trail by the water, admiring the wildflowers and the lovely scent from the hawthorn blossoms.
We were very impressed with the art and architecture installations, especially the Janus Chairs which are just under 5 miles from the car park. Silvas Capitalis, a giant timber head, has a wonderful presence, is beautifully constructed and is well worth a visit.

Hadn't visited Kielder Water for a few years, so decided to take a ferry trip as the weather was calm and boats were operating. The price seemed expensive, £16 for an adult ticket, and the booking process was a faff given the wifi and connectivity issues in the area. You have to prebook your tickets, but then they only accept cash on the boats for drinks and snacks. It made us long for the days when you just walked on and bought a ticket, much easier! Nevertheless, the Osprey Ferry trip is very enjoyable, relaxing and the perfect length at 90 minutes. Commentary is informative and not intrusive, and it still remains the best way to experience the vast expanse of the lake and forest. Afterwards we drove to Hawkhope Car Park to walk across the dam itself which was very worthwhile. You can also marvel at the damage wreaked on the forest by Storm Arwen last Autumn.

Beautiful views of the water and spotted an osprey catching a fish - but, car parking is £5 per day either coins or card for payment in the reception area of the health centre. Parking payment signs are in short supply and blue badge holder pay (why?). Other signs are in pretty short supply as well as we struggled to find the lakeside path running east (we weren't the only ones and finally spotted pile of signs which had been rooted by by the management. Helpful. Forest Drive is well worth the £3 but only cash is accepted at the machine. The surface is no where near as bad as the warnings suggest but may be very different after heavy rain. Watch out for very small lizzards crossing.

I don't think it was quite as dramatic as the previous chap's experience.
Our kids are 4 & 7. It would probably have been more magical if it were a bit darker and possibly a bit of snow to add to it but the weather is what it is. We had good weather apart from it being gusty until around lunchtime at which point the heavens opened, luckily we had completed most of the timed slots, wouldn't have liked to stand in the rain listening to Mrs cookoo and then traipes up in the mud to see Santa. We paid £180 for a family of 4. The day is basically made up of theatrical performances which I think are probably aimed at kids around 8-10 years old. My 7 year old found them a bit boring and didn't really get what was going on. On a positive note, they both loved the elves workshop, making their wooden Robin, seeing santa and being given a key to his toy emporium and picking their own toy. There is also snow tubing, popcorn and mulled apple juice included in the ticket price.
We normally prepare for day events well, so we did take plenty of food and snacks with us to keep the kids going. They did have wood fired pizza for around £2.30 a slice and a sweat burger type van that did deluxe hot dogs as well. I was factoring this in for the kids but luckily we had enough food to see us through, I think it will have been quite expensive for food for 4, I'd certainly prefer to spend that in a restaurant than from a food truck so glad we didn't have to. The timed events were quite close together and I read that in another review so prepared sandwiches for the kids as there wouldn't have been enough time between activities (which was correct). Although there was a period after seeing santa of around 2 hours before our final activity of the beavers. We decided to call it a day about an hour before, given the fact it was pouring with rain and our 7 year old found all the performers boring, we decided not to bother waiting for a queue in the rain and left. There are a great deal of staff involved in the day, and coupled with the free snow tubing, small popcorn, mulled apple juice and the kids gifts (parents also got a good quality Christmas tree bauble) I certainly don't feel ripped off. (the bird of prey centre is also free for ticket holders but didn't go due to the rain). I still wouldn't go back as I just feel that £180 could be spent better on a Christmas event for the kids. As mentioned, I'm sure it would be more magical if the weather was better but we are in England after all and it could have been far worse for us. If you end up going and it's already pouring with rain, queuing in the rain, watching the stage shows in the rain, I'm sure there isn't much that could be done to prevent utter misery. So all in all, probably would have been better if the kids were a little older and it didn't rain all afternoon. It was an OK experience for us but it wasn't the type of thing that I felt we'd need to do again.

Where on earth do I begin to describe how bad today was as a paying customer?
The only saving grace was how our 6 year old enjoyed some parts of a gruelling 8 hour day. She still said some was weird and boring and she is 6.
First of many questions is why does this day need to be spread over 7 hours? The activities were drawn out and just bizarre in places. We had to keep reminding ourselves we were here for Christmas. Nothing during the day really made you feel it was a Xmas experience - no music, no signs, no displays and barely any staff or characters at all.
The fact all 700 or so kids had to do between each 'activity' is a tiny play park with muddy slides and swings was laughable. We even tried to play crazy golf but decided after 10 mins it was again awful. Just a few holes and no structure to the course or even any signs to promote it was there.
The food was a burger van that sold tiny burgers for £8 and a few chips for £5. Again for a full day experience is that all we could expect a burger van you find in IKEA car park?
The shows with the beavers and the Theatre were genuinely awful. Nothing to do with Xmas and acting almost like someone won a comp to be on a stage and sing about a tree or some lights. Most families looked bored and walked out. The only bonus was it was warm inside and that is honestly the best part of the whole place the fact it offered us warmth every now and then.
The workshop was build something out of wood and then walk 2 more miles to a dark wood to meet Santa.
We couldn't believe how dark the way out was back to car park and almost a vertical hill which nearly ended my 8 month pregnant wife.
If anyone gave today more than 1 star they really are being kind and generous for Xmas spirit because it was one of the worst things I have ever been part of.

We'd heard years ago that this was the peak Christmas magical event in the North East. Tickets used to be like gold dust and it used to get rave reviews. Having managed to get some for 2023, and dropping over £200 in the process, we were left distinctly underwhelmed, and thinking that either people were massively exaggerated how good it was in the past, or there had been a precipitous drop in quality over the years.
The day is centred around four set-piece events which you get fixed timeslots for. One of them is the Elves Workshop / Santa visit, which IS well put together a decent length. The other three events are theatrical performances. And to be honest, they're a bit samey. You're essentially just sitting down on some hay to watch a small group of people act. The one on 'bio abundance' seemed a bit "much" for a magical Christmas experience aimed at small kids. I would have expected a bit more variety with the fixed events, and some interactivity. Things like sleigh rides? Ice skating?
Outside of the planned events, there wasn't a huge amount to do. A snow tube slide, some food stalls, a reindeer pen, and that's about it. If, like us, you visit Kielder in the summer, you know all about the Birds of Prey centre and playpark, so passing them off as winter wonderland features is a bit cheeky. With a three hour wait between two of our events, we walked around the site a few times, then found somewhere inside to sit down out of the rain. Kids got, understandably, bored. Appreciate they're limited by the site, but it just felt there could have been a lot more scope to spread things out and allow people to explore? Illuminated forest trails? Treasure hunts?
Everything else felt like filler around the Santa visit. And while that IS the primary part of the day, when you pay £40+ per head, you expect a LOT more. Having visited the Christmas Adventure at Stockeld Park last year, which was half the price but had WAY more to do, the Kielder winter wonderland is frankly a rip-off in comparison.

There is absolutely no information provided online on Kielder Forest walking routes so we headed to the 'Castle' to look at some information boards on routes to take and information on which paths are open. Note: even this information is not correct!! and we started on a walk only to get half an hour in and then for the path to be closed?! There wasn't much else to see at the 'Castle' either, so for us it was hardly worthwhile visiting Kielder Forest at the moment.
Kielder Water and Forest Park is still devastated by Storm Arwen (back in November 2021) and sooo many paths are still closed in May 2021, that we just cannot recommend a visit. It seemed as if every route we tried to take was closed.
Kielder Salmon Centre was closed when we walked there, no information prior to us just turning up at the building. In fact the lack of information anywhere was really appalling. Kielder Forest you really need to do better!!
The only parts of our visit to Kielder Water & Forest Park that we enjoyed was our visit to the Bird of Prey Centre (which only takes 90minutes to 2 hours as very small site) and our night at the Observatory (which we still enjoyed even though had complete cloud cover so we saw absolutely no stars at all!)

Visited whilst researching a trip to the observatory but this is a little gem.
We visited before the main tourist season so was quiet but weather was great - can imagine when there are more activities on offer this would be a great place to visit. Certainly a pretty and relaxing view from the oversized bench.
Enjoyed lunch in the restaurant on site and the staff in the shop were very friendly although the birds definitely did not like the bird seed we bought there.

We thought kielder was a great place for a winter get a way. On arrival we where served two glasses of presecco which is a good start to most people's holiday. A detailed map took us straight to our cabin , which was very well maintained and had all the essentials for a relaxing stay. The hot tub on the deck area was used on a daily basis even when it was snowing. There's plenty of wildlife here we saw deer and rabbits frequently passing by. There's a bar and eatery on site overlooking the water . Whilst it was the middle of winter there was still a programme of activities to try out and an indoor pool to enjoy. A well established path goes around the water and is ideal for walks and cycling around.Definitely be back again !

I done the osprey blue trail and then the lakeside trail. Most impressed with the cycle path around the lake, Lovely surface to ride on. Steep in a few short places and it’s a long way around but I do a lot o cycling. A mountain bike is not essential for the lakeside trail. it’s a well cared for path. One of best I’ve been on. I used a gravel bike but a hybrid, touring bike, etc will be fine but not suitable for a road bike. Very quiet and peaceful. Only downside is from the Castle car park the main lakeside trail could be better signposted, had trouble finding it as first visit to Kielder. Osprey trail not suitable for small children but older kids with MTBs will be fine.

Where is the best area to visit with dogs near the water and are the dogs able to go for a swim

Hi
I am looking at running around kielder starting at 6am. Can you park at bakethin car park for free?
Thanks
Written January 2, 2020
Hi sorry for the delay, I can advise we charge £5 to park but this covers you for the full day well as all the parking areas around Kielder
Written February 27, 2020
Is it possible to cycle all the way around Kielder water on a road bike or would the North Shore section require an mountain bike/hybrid?
Martin
Written April 7, 2019
All the way round is c.26 miles.if you are fit then any bike will do it.the 'footpath' is compacted lime stone but is relatively smooth. A mountain bike is the best option with out doubt. My son ( at 29 years with a girlfriend completed it with plenty of stops and a picnic.go for it.

i wouldn't have thought they would have a christmas tree
if you are thinking of a group of you going for christmas, i would suggest you look at the larger houses in the area , and visit keilder as and when you want to visit. the lodges are not as big as you might expect , in hindsight i wish we had done that for 6 adults ,
