Wuyuan, located at the border of Anhui and Jiangxi Provinces, is touted as having the most beautiful villages in China. A visit to Wuyuan would be incomplete without visiting Likeng, one of the ancient villages with old heritage homes and a waterway running right smack through it. Mid-March is also a good time for a visit as the landscape is covered with carpets of yellow flowers. We were told that they are flowers from the rapeseed plants used for making oil. They are indeed a breathtaking site as miles and miles rolled by!

Wuyuan, on the boundary of three provinces in Jiangxi’s northeastern corner, is a beautiful county in China dotted with strange caves, deep secluded rocks and numerous historical sites. It is praised as “the most beautiful of Chinese village” by the oversea photographers. It is also the home to the old architecture. It is also the homeland of Zhuxi, the famous scholar of Confucianism. There are some highlights including old trees, plank bridges and old residences. The grotesque trees are scattered around Wuyuan area. The plank bridges are a characteristic in Wuyuan, among which Rainbow Bridge is one of most famous. This wooden bridge was built in Song Dynasty with 140 meters in height and 7 meters in width.

Wuyuan is a great destination, and not often visited by foreigners. Its fairly inaccessible unless you go with friends by car. Lots of old villages that are charming and well preserved. The natural scenery matches the local culture - both terrific. Might be a good stopover between Jingdezhen and Huangshan. The winding one lane roads can be slightly terrifying, but that goes with the territory. Lots of waterfalls, clean rivers, and wide mountain valleys.

we bought the combination ticket of the Wuyuan attractions (210 RBM), and because we have a car, we could visit almost all of them except three that are out of the ways. Among all these attractions, only the Jiangling (江岭), Jiangwan (江湾),and wolonggu ( 卧龙谷) were worth it. we did not go to Wengongshan (文公山)or Yuangyanghu (鸳鸯湖). The rest are either completely comercialized, or not worth the trouble. Feel the combination tickets are completely without merit. one is better off just pay the exorbitant single ticket prices and forget of the other attractions. The bright side is that the local hotels in Qinghua Village are relatively cheap and good. I would not recommend anyone to visit Wuyuan. you are better off just visiting one of the old towns near Shanghai, like Tongli (同里),or nanxun(南浔)。 or the free ones like zhujiajiao (朱家角)。I don't like Zhouzhuan (周庄)nor xitang (西塘)。 enough old towns for me! you don't want to pay 100 RMB to just visit an old village.

Playing dragen lantern is a tradition activity in Wuyuan. It's usually 100 meters long. One people is in charge of one part.

The village of HuangLin marks its name on WuYuan tourism map for its villagers dehydrating their food by sunning them on the roof top during Autumn. In the past, villagers in this hill top were basically living by themselves without interference from the outside world.

I can’t recommend the best season to visit this place but I would think the best time to visit this place is in the early morning, you could catch the villagers bringing out all the crops like red peppers, corns, melons, vegetables, etc and sunning on their roof. The actions are worth lots of shutter clicks. Although no villagers leave there anymore (thanks to tourism), they are still doing this for what this place is well known for, the architecture adding on the crop dehydration makes HuangLin a very photogenic place. There is a corner where you can also see old masters working on wood craft works. As the village is established on the mountain, there a many angle of views for your photo shootout.
I don’t think there is any big restaurants here, so remember to bring yourself some quick bites. Half a day is good enough for this place, I visited this place on two separate days, in the early morning and late afternoon, both are good for photoshoot, but my vote goes to the morning visit
There are two ways to reach the village, by the cable car and driving up. In Mar 2014, the road driving up/down are close to complete. On weekends, the line for cable car ride could take hours, so good luck. The 3rd way which I am not sure whether it is open to public is by foot, you can see the path while you are on the cable car ride… I won’t advice you to try unless you are those die hard trekkers.
Beside the architectures, there many hectares of rape seeds flowers during Spring season, late March to early April. Do submerge yourself in the wonderful sea of golden yellowish flowers. Exploring this area will add a couple of more angles to your album
