On the Discovery France Cycle Trip, we cycled to the canoe company. They were very kind and told us to try cycling along the other side of the river, to get a better view of the Castle. As we had lots of extra time. So we did, and had the MOST romantic picnic next to the water , over looking the castle. In fact I found an artist in Amboise that did a painting of the exact spot we had the picnic, so we had to purchase it! It is a bit of workout canoeing alongside with the biking, plus at one area you have to pull the canoe out and put back in a few meters down. But totally doable if you are use to being active.

This was the highlight of our visit to the Loire. If you are reading this review, just go there now and take this canoe trip. You will remember it forever. We were curious so we drove by the Canoe Company to check it out. I haven’t canoed since year 2000. The two staff members were so enthusiastic and helpful. They showed us the clean new Canadian double canoes, the watertight drum (to secure phone and car keys) and told us we could canoe upriver to the chateau in half an hour, though there was no time limit on our rental costing ten Euros each. We were totally convinced. It was superb. The river is slow-moving and quiet with very few others on the river. When we rounded the bend, the view of the chateau was breathtaking. We were able to canoe under the arches and see the chateau from both sides. Our whole trip lasted 90 minutes and every minute was a happy experience.

Was staying with my french friends in Tours. Less than an hour drive from Tours. Hired the Canadian canoes and had a wonderful couple of hours paddling around and under Chenonceau Chateau. Owner spoke fluent English. Had a really fab time. Well worth a visit. Little bistrot nearby. Could spend the whole day canoeing.

We turned up without a booking wanting to do the short one way 6km trip but unfortunately were fully booked that day and next for this (so if you want to do this or any of the other longer trips in summer holidays make sure you book!). However owner (with great English) was very helpful. Suggested we came back at 5pm following day for the 1-2 hrs round trip up to Chenonceau and back. It was really lovely. The light at that time was amazing. 2 canoes for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. Proper kayaks and quite manageable upstream and back. And only 10€ each. Highly recommended.
