Set in a back alley away from the main street this is an oasis of quiet. Loved looking at the memorials, especially the two battlefield crosses from WWI. Some nice religious furnishings too. There was a useful guide leaflet for sale and the church is open during the day.

How many churches had Thomas Woolsey (later cardinal) as their vicar? How many churches were partially blown up in an 'accident' during the English Civil War and re-built in 6 years following a national appeal?
A beautiful, prayerful building set amid the North Devon rolling countryside in an historic market town.

Loads of history here, dating back to the 1600s, one of the final battles of the English Civil War when the Cavalier defenders were on their last stand here. Ammunition and Gunpowder were stored in the Church and suddenly a massive explosion following an act of treachery and the church was destroyed. It was of course rebuilt over the following years but there is a mass grave in the gardens for the defenders who met their end here.. Beautiful building, an acoustic gem and many concerts have been held here. I have had the pleasure of singing here at a remembrance service with the Torrington Cavaliers, a unique charity organisation who raise large amounts for local good causes. Magical atmosphere!

St Michael's is a lovely church almost hidden in the centre of Great Torrington, it is sizeable and well maintained, with a small amount investigation you can an unearth all sorts of interesting history including its use as a prison. To learn more about it 1646 Centre 300 yds away has most of the should I say "more recent" historical facts on display. Well worth a bit of time to visit
