Not at all as expected. Don’t look at any pictures before hand and you’ll be reasonably happy with the sparkling water. Do not book through a hotel (mistake) and pay even more for this expensive experience. Save yourself the headache and expense, and book online. Consider driving yourself if going to Fajardo. Lots of places to eat while waiting on your time, and you’d be able to instead of eating a snack bag of chips and drinking a tiny water before putting a mask back on.

It may be better to do this in Vieques or La Parguera, but the overcrowded conditions in a pitch black mangrove canal trying to avoid kayaks from other companies makes this a one and done. Guides were good getting started, on the lagoon and getting back out. Didnt feel like they were with us in the dark, and no where when we got stuck under a tree the first time. They helped us out of a jam the second time, but I think they could have been helping control jams before it happens. Got a good workout paddling and strongly recommend you wear swim clothes you don’t need the next day (water has a sharp odor to it). Take a chance of clothes too. If you have your car, you’ll have a secure place to keep everything instead of below a table where anyone could grab it. They do give you a valuable bag for your phone or keys and stuff in it stayed dry.

I found places in Florida offering the same thing. I’ll update my post if I find a similar experience to this (although mosquitos weren’t that bad here). Certainly have seen better underwater lights night fishing. Can’t upload a photo because it wouldn’t have shown anything.

Had a great experience with the kayak tour offered by Las Tortugas Adventures. Great communication beforehand, on time pick up, good guides to help navigate a narrow waterway and very informative talk once we reached the lagoon. Light snacks and water once trip completed.

My husband and I did this activity on our final night in Puerto Rico and it was a great way to end our trip! The guides were informative, awesome, and kept everyone together while navigating a group of nearly 20 kayakers. The experience was one of the highlights of our trip. We kayak regularly but, for people that don’t kayak, I will list several tips. One, bring bug spray. Two, where your bathing suit with a swim shirt. Swim shirt will protect you from the mosquitoes. Our main guide, Brian, was very informative and welcomed questions regarding the environment. The weather conditions were perfect for us to view the lights. Highly recommend this kayak tour!

The ride to the tour was awful 1 1/2 hrs each way in a vehicle with no springs or shocks and engine trouble. The ride had people exclaiming out loud but not for joy!
The driver did his best to keep the vehicle from stalling, but it was no easy task.
The tour guides were ok but didn't really have much to say. We went to an area that was so crowded on the bay and I am certain that didn't help the fact that the bioluminescence was minimal. (I do understand they are not in control of that)
The kayaking was enjoyable but again overcrowded, boats banging into one another, coming and going through the mangroves.

I can’t review the actual activity, because I did not get to go as a result of Las Tortugas’s poor communication and lack of professionalism.

Our driver moved up the pick up time a few hours before the scheduled activity. He sent us a text message, which I did received later. My phone service was not working on Puerto Rico. The company claims they tried to call, but I did not get a missed call notification so this may or not be true. I’m incredibly disappointed that the company didn’t send an email as our confirmation and reminders had come through email. We received a reminder email with the 6:45pm start time the day before, so we assumed that we had the information we needed.

We booked this tour through our hotel precisely to avoid this type of communication issue. Our tour was scheduled to leave at 6:45pm. The rescheduled time was 6:30pm. We were in lobby at 6:41 and the tour vehicle had already come and gone. They made no effort to call up to our room and apparently were not willing to wait a few minutes. It would have been so easy to just have the front desk call us since this company has a relationship with the hotel.

Changing the pick up time just hours before the activity when I had booked the activity and paid in full over two weeks earlier shows a lack of professionalism or maybe a lack of experience. People plan trips and schedule activities to fit lots of things in. Moving a start time up just doesn’t work on short notice.

A day later, I did get get an email thanking me for going on the tour and asking for a review, so they didn’t lose my email address after all and were capable of sending an email; they just didn’t think to send one.

If you want to take this tour, here is my advice: Don’t get your hopes up, check any possible mode of communication constantly the day of your tour, and be at the pickup site extra early.

My real recommendation: There are many bio bay experiences if you search.

The next time I am in Puerto Rico, I will be booking with a different company.

Tour guides were kind, funny, and helpful. Overall, we enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to others.

However there are a few things to know:

1) Only go during a new moon or around then. We went during a half moon and it was too bight to see anything. The guides strap all the kayaks together and put a big tarp over everyone so it can be dark enough to see. Glad they're able to make it work but definitely not the experience I was hoping for.

2) Don't be fooled by the photos online; these are 100% photoshopped (the guides even admitted it). The glow is more like glitter and far less impressive than the photos. But if you can appreciate it for what it is, it's neat.

3) Book through the company directly, not through a hotel; you'll save a bunch of money.

4) It can get REALLY buggy. Skip this tour if you are very adverse to getting mosquito bites.

This experience was way too overpriced. We paid $125/person to paddle out to a lagoon, only to wave our hands in the water under a tarp while tied up side by side to other kayaks. We thought we’d at least get to paddle around the lagoon to see the bioluminescence, but nope. 5 minutes after they removed the tarp, it was time to head back in. We basically played bumper boats with kayaks from several other touring companies going both ways down the narrow passage. It was very chaotic. The trip through the mangroves out to the lagoon was a fun experience, but the rest of the trip was disappointing.

We went on this trip because the concierge at the courtyard Marriott recommended it.
I was highly disappointed with the experience. It felt like cattle herding. It was a beautiful evening and there were several different tour groups and we were rushed down the mangrove canal. People were running into each other, those leaving the lagoon and those attempting to get in. Once inside, we had to cover ourselves under some tarps to see the luminescence. There really wasn’t much to see. The guides were tired and ready to go home. So we rushed out of the lagoon and back out to the bay and onto the bus and back on the road. It just wasn’t an enjoyable
Experience. And we weren’t allowed time to take any type of pictures either.

Do not recommend this excursion for anyone!

It is absolute chaos and not safe. Other reviews claim it’s just people not being fit, it has nothing to do with fitness. The tour companies seem more focused on making money than safety. There are way too many kayaks and people launched at the same time.

People do not listen to the single file line instructions and are racing and cutting each other off - and ramming into one another. Instructions from the guides are limited and not listened to.

Imagine you are paddling in complete darkness in a tiny canal with huge mangrove trees lining the banks. You are with hundred other kayaks and you can’t see them in front of you or coming in the opposite direction.

We had our oars stuck in mangrove roots because we couldn’t see, almost decapitate us, and a group of kayakers completely tbone us in the opposite direction. Then a guide yelled at us, as if this was our faults.

You barely see anything and spend 5 minutes in the bay after the awful canal experience.

Go read the review from 2015, “Want to have a panic attack” it perfectly sums up the experience, nothing has changed.

Unprofessional and dangerous

We really enjoyed our experience. The guides had a good sense of humor. It was nice that we left a half hour after the other groups as it was less congested. We had low expectations of seeing the bioluminescence but were pleasantly surprised with how bright they were on our trip. Please note it is really hard to photograph the bioluminescence so we recommend just enjoying the trip.
