This is a new temple compound, unlike so many others, that are ancient, and unlike many of the nearby attractions, which are 2,000 years old, but it's pretty. The main feature is a big wooden Buddha they say has a special connection to healing. A tour of the compound takes about an hour. There's a pretty pond, a tall pagoda, two temples, some side buildings, not far from the ancient canal town of Xi Tang.

We stumbled across Guyaoshi Temple almost by accident, because it was not included in any of the trip information we had gathered before heading to Xitang, in Jiashan County south west of Shanghai.
It is a magnificent temple with what appear to be living quarters for monks, a large central temple complex, and a magnificent nine-storey pagoda.
But the place was absolutely deserted and I suspect it was under renovation, as there were signs of recent restoration of painting.
We were able to get into the temple but unfortunately the pagoda was securely locked, so it was a "no go".
