Windy road, but stunning views and lovely Hindu temple.
Long windy roads, worth the drive, be careful of later than October as weather cold and we were at 3,500 ft, sometimes hard to breath. Beautiful Hindu temple . . able to visit. . . scenery magnificent. Places to stop en route for drinks and snacks

    Peaceful and Divine
We visited Hatu Peak in June 2024, the View from the Hatu Peak is mesmerizing and you will get a 360 degree view of the mountains here.. The Hatu Mata Temple is very Serene, Divine and you can feel the Peace inside the Temple. The road to the Hatu Mata Temple is very Narrow so try to hire local taxi or local driver from the Narkanda Main Market.

Road to Hatu Peak begins from Narkanda and is a steep tortuous climb of 6 kilometres from around 8000 ft to 11500 ft. Not only that its a single lane road without any railing around the ledge. Road is broken at several places. Few patches in between have a wide road which allows vehicles coming from opposite direction to cross. Many local or egoistic drivers make the ride tougher. However, few drivers are co-operative and realise the fact that one will end up in a log jam if ego is not buried.

On the top there is a plenty of place to park. Hatu Mata temple is serene quiet and area around offers picturesque view of the valleys around and serene snow capped peaks of Himalayas far away. However, there is no outlet for water or snacks. It seems local administration is not interested in developing tourism in this area. One deserted old broken down HPMC store is there covered with cowdung and 1-2 cows grazing in the area.

However its worth going once in lifetime.

Tip-1. Dont go if you have a brand new car as few scratches are definitely bound to be there on this narrow stretch of road. 2. Carry your own water and eatables. 3. Dont litter around and make the area dirty. 4. Avoid going after 3 pm. Better to go between 6 am and 12 noon and return between 2 to 4 pm.

Hatu Mata Temple is the main attraction of Narkanda apart from Apple Gardens.
Situated about 12000 ft above sea level, this beautiful temple is located among cool mountain region.
Whatever we came to know from the priest of the temple is that the region was under Tibet in the past.
Gradually it came under Gorkha rule then Nepal then British & lastly to India.
The architecture of the temple clearly confirmed his version. It is not like other Hindu temple. Made of Deodar tree wood with intricate art. Top of the temple has one Dragon face. Unlike Hindu temple, photography is permitted here.
This is the highest place in Narkanda, very large area.
Road to Hatu Mata Temple from the main road is very very dangerous & bad. It is so narrow that two cars cannot pass easily. One has to go back until little space is found. There is no fencing. Deep gorge one side, even expert drivers also scared. Sometimes road is not metalled. All 7 kms from main road should be made good by the government. For the time being, alternately cars can be released from both ends.
Huge number of devotees with big size cars are moving in this road. Anytime accident can happen.

Its a popular tourist spot for viewing the Himalayas particularly from the 3,300m high Hatu Peak.
But it is observed that tour organizers are reluctant to take tourists to this place. They say, its a narrow road, very small cars can go, its muddy, slippery, and so many reasons...
You are new to the place, you generally surrender to what they tell, if you force them to take you, they will create hell lot of problems to make your trip miserable. Most tour operators use this modus operandi.

Hatu was in my list when i planned for Narkanda.

This is close to 6 to 8 kms from Narkanda town.
Road is narrow but car can go if you are confident and have experience of driving the narrow road.

Other option is to hire local taxi may charge 50 to 100 Rs per person and it depends on taxi availability and your negotiation skills.

If you are interested for trekking then you can take that if your health always and you can do steep climb.

On the top once you reach you can visit hatu temple , bheem chula and awesome 360 view of Himalaya snow covered mountains.
I was not that lucky to get mountains view as it was foggy.
Best season to visit when there is snow there known for skiing and other such activities.

Awsome place, beautiful view with a few paid excursion activities but if you are carrying your kids, please don't plan a visit.
If you are accompanying your kids, please don't drive at the stretch. I drove a duster till that point and believe me it was really scary, especially downhill. Road is narrow, there are only 2-3 points where another car can pass through, else one has to reverse a long, narrow and scary stretch.
But, if you are a Real Driver, and not scared of such drives, then its another big experiencing track for you.
Though We could not reach the peak, as it was a 3 km trek on glassy ice road, with our 2 year old kid, we decide to return to the parking area and enjoyed the view and activities with Tea and Maggi, there only.

Overall, a good experience, our kid also enjoyed playing in the snow there. :)

We visited Hatu Peak with a Driver from HP and with many years of driving experience and we saw most of the cars having very narrow escapes as the road is very narrow and it has been thrown open for cars coming in both directions. The Himachal Pradesh Government must immediately act on this issue as it is very very dangerous and risky and we saw so many cars on the edge when there were cars coming from both sides. Wonder why did they open it for cars when it was suitable for Trekkers.
Hatu Peak is beautiful but full of cars and minivans and the smell of burning of clutch and break as cars come from both sides all the time. Do climb up the peak and leave your cars behind if you wish to avoid any risks. We were so scared that we wanted to just reach back to the base of the mountain safely

Shimla trip without visiting Hatu Peak is incomplete. Although little away from Shimla 60 km, its must visit site for travelers who love nature and its beauty. You can have clear view of Himalya range.
All covered with snow in winter, it gives beautiful view of mountain tops.

Location: 7 km from Narkanda
Opening Hours: No fixed hours. But not advisable after dark
Travelling Mode: Car not bigger than Innova.
Local cab charges ₹800 to both way with 1 hour waiting
Description:  It is the highest place about 11152 feet above sea level. The area is surrounded with conifer trees like cordles, maple, pine trees. At the highest point there is a wooden temple of Kalimata, known popularly as Hatu Mata Temple. There is a walking trail for the trekkers as well. You can get unobstructed views panoramic view of Pir Panjal, Dahauladhar ranges. We visited the place in December on a bright shining day. We got a clear panoramic view of the range. The temple was in very serene and calm environment and we visited Kalimata.
A must visit of you are visiting Narkanda or Thanedar.

The trek is long 7kms. There is a road that leads directly to Hatu Mata mandir, so technically its not a trek. You can hire a taxi and visit the temple within 2 hrs. However, we chose to trek all the way upto the temple. There are lots of cars and taxis on the toad that makes walking difficult. We took some off road routes that made it look like a trek. However the views from top are amazing. Not to be missed.
