- Naushirwan CDubai, United Arab Emirates54 contributionsGreat stay for nature loversThe approach to this place was from near Dalhousie. At the entrance they shall seek a charge of Rs. 250 to visit this place. We had booked this place for a night so these charges were not applicable. We drove up the forest - a 3 km rough drive. Lot of dust rammed up as a vehicle would pass. It is even walkable and that would have been more fun. The Kalatop Forest Rest House is an amazing place to stay. Stayed in a very cozy Log Hut that accomodates 2 persons. The weather being very cold (around 0 degrees C), there was access to continuous hot tea/coffee. The staff serving this place was very helpful and would prepare basic stuff like vegetables, chapati, rice, dal. For non-veg food, you need to inform them in advance for them to make provisions. Overall an excellent stay completely away from buildings and city-life.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 13, 2024
- VegetarianHunterMumbai, India47 contributionsA good choice for one day picnic from Dalhousie (better than Khajjiar)Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary offers a relaxing one day picnic from Dalhousie. If you are staying in Dalhousie and thinking of choosing between Khajjiar (which is further away) and Kalatop, then undoubtedly Kalatop should be your choice. A short 30min drive from Dalhousie, the sanctuary amidst cedar and pine trees can be walked up from the main road (3kms from the toll gate) or drive upto the entrance of the sanctuary. The place offers a few eateries, but better to carry your own lunch/snacks. There is also a good ziplining and adventure/obstacle course offered by Mr. Vipan and his team (Mobile#9882733392). The kids and family enjoyed the activities. We also did a couple of short treks inside the sanctuary. If you are upto it, you can also arrive early in the morning and have a guide trek you down to Khajjiar (10kms) amidst the scenic forest trails. Absolutely worth a visit if you are in Dalhousie.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 29, 2024
- Chetna MLondon, United Kingdom587 contributionsTip Top Kala TopWe visited Kalatop wildlife reserve during our stay in Dalhousie. If you are into nature this place should absolutely be on your list of places to visit. Whether you see birds or wildlife depends on the time of day. For the less mobile you can hire a small car to drive you to the top of the reserve. Hardy trekkers can hire a guide who with a few short cuts will swiftly get you to the top in approximately 40-50 minutes. Your level of fitness will dictate whether you will find the trek hard or easy. I am of an average level of fitness and have to admit I found it hard going but well worth doing especially when you get to the top. Going downhill is easy bit! Whether you opt to take a car to the top or trek up, this reserve is well worth a visit.Visited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 31, 2024

Should close this as we did not see a single bird or animal, road is one tract and dangerous when 2 tourist vehicle come head on !!
Beautiful green trees all round and rocks on one side & deep caverns on other side .
Road is very poor state——Do not visit as it’s waste of time with a very sore bottom

You can go from Dalhousie and you have to walk through dense forest for three kilometers to reach a beautiful destination. This is really heaven on earth. Surrounded by dense Devdar forest and a small cottage to stay. This experience is worth a lot and should not be missed.

First we stopped at the 'Echo Point' where the echo of our voice comes back. The loud voice of the blowing wind was my first experience to hear, it was giving an experience like an engine is moving. We were moving through the dark woods, the Devdar Trees, Satrush Trees, Fur Trees. On the way some places are good for drinking. Then reaching the top at Kalatop was an adventurous experience. Some adventurous activities were available there. It was very cold there.

In short, Nice place to sit and relax. Worth to spend a night stay here. Not worth a day visit enroute Dalhousie or Khajjiar.
Booking the rooms here is a challenging one as I don't see clear reviews on how to book. Online booking could not be done and one has to call and book the rooms via DFO Chamba (Ph- 01899222639). I have tried calling this number many times through Airtel and always I got a response that the destination is busy. Later one day, I called through BSNL and it works. They are ready to take booking only prior 10 days from the date of stay. Once booking is done, double check with them if the booking is confirmed.
They don't charge for the car entry if the rooms are booked and it is Rs.250 for car entry for day tourist who does not stay here. Many reviewers recommend to walk 3km from check post to forest rest house main gate. The main room is near to the main gate which is reserved for Government officials and there are 3 rooms near the canteen(160m from the forest rest house main gate) which is alloted to tourists. Not sure of other rooms in this place. As in hotels, there are no persons to carry luggages and be ready to carry your luggages. Room sizes are small but clean rooms accomodating 2 persons. 3 persons can adjust and stay here
No need to worry about food. Person incharge of canteen will take care of ur food requirements. Must have pakora, maggi and tea here in the evenings. There are small shops located at backside of the rest house which provides basic things like water, bread and is a minute walk.
From evening 5 to morning 10, with not much of tourists, special feel to sit and relax near lawns, beautiful sunset at sunset point and a calm walk.

The Kala top sactuary is a 1.5km walk from where you park your car. Though the road should be drivable, it had and was raining and the driver refused to drive in. The walk turned out to be interesting through winding forest trail, but unfortunately I had to cut it short as a hailstorm came down , and there was no place to take shelter.

A reserved forest area where you need to pay a certain amount as a tax to enter this place. A dense forest area with the devdar trees and in this area you would also find wild animals in the night time. Preferred visiting time is the day time. There is a guest house of Forest department within this sanctuary area which can be got reserved from Wild life wing Chamba.

Introduction: High altitude forest area, pristine destination, natural splendours that are available in abundance here, Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is located mid-way on your journey to Khajjiar Lake. There is an entry fee of around 250INR for car/taxi/jeep. Track to the rest house would take your breath away, not safe in rainy season as there is just one road for both ways. Though, people prefer trekking 3KM, some prefer to visit via car. You would find tea shop and a splendid view from the balcony, there is a small village located and the picturesque view of the mud house will take you back in time. There is an activity area also including zip-lining & rappelling. There is a 12KM trekking path also from Kalatop to Khajjiar if you are daring enough, better start early morning if you are planning to, to avoid the night.
Personal Note: If you are planning the day, I would suggest you to visit Kalatop in the morning and then Dainkund Peak, followed with Panchpula and then back to Dalhousie and the market there. Or else visit this place early morning and then trek to Khajjiar and then plan for Dainkund and Panchpula other day. Avoid this in rainy season.
Nearby Places: Well, nearby places would be Dainkund Peak, Khajjiar Lake and Panchpula.
Time: Better spend more than an hour here because it’s so relaxing here and trekking and reaching the rest house would be worth it, trust me, giving you the wildlife experience.
For any queries, you can post the question below; I would love to assist you. Also, if you found my review helpful, don’t forget to give a helpful vote.

If u r a nature lover than Kalatop is the place... One can spend 2-3 hrs in the lap of mother nature (quite nd calm).. Sound of the breeze is soothing and melodious.. Though it is a wild life sanctuary but I doubt if there r any wild animals ... There r quite a few places like this in Himachal and it is at par with them.
Visted in June..

How & from where I can book kalatop frh to stay there ? Is there any online booking option available ?
Written October 5, 2018
Call at +91 189 922 2639 or +91 189 922 7503. It's the number of DFO Chamba fur Kalatop FRH booking.
Maybe you will be required to call 3/4 times before you can reach them for your booking.

Hi,
can you tell us how did you book room at the rest house at Kalatop?
Written July 5, 2018
Wow the idea of spending a night in the midst of the jungles at Kalatop definitely thrills me, but be aware that the facilities might not be very good. Yes you need to call the district forest office, Chamba for booking the bunglows at Kalatop. Alternatively, you can stay at Khajjiar or Dalhousie and make a visit to Kalatop for a few hours.
