Chamba Central park is your first in town view as you Arrive in Chamba. Chamba is likely not on the Western travel list of hill towns. It is advertised for its many historic temples which on my first first visit were certainly under visited. We did stay at the "White House" near the park and a good central location for walking. Clean, Basic and a good little roof top restaurant.
Chamba appears to be an Indian destination. I am not sure the town itself is worth the effort needed to get there, but the effort to get there is a spectacular drive over the mountains and through amazing countryside that just puts Chamba at the end. But, Chamba is mainly a shoppers stop at the end of a beautiful and difficult road. The park on this visit was hopefully at the end of an event. It was extremely littered and its a field of used grass... Nothing to write home about .
The historic temples are great but really under visited and for all their hype not really the reason people seem to go there. It is possible, given the Indians enjoyment of festivals, that this changes... but as for Chamba, go for the drive there, not for the experience of Chamba, unless you like to shop chamba is pretty a drive by on the way to something else.

Its called Manjri garden. It overlooks River Ravi. It has small space for kids to play also.
You can spend half an hour to 1 hour there if you are in Chamba.

The 'Chowgan' as it is called, is the entire town descends in the evening.. the young & old alike. A visit to Chamba is not complete without a walk in the beautiful lawns of the Chowgan in the evening, with the sound of countless children making merry and soft breeze wafting through your hair!

Chamba is a very congested and small dirty city. With all respect to people who find it worth visiting, i would have been better off avoiding it. I wonder why this park is even mentioned in the list of attractions! It has absolutely nothing to see, for a tourist!!
We just drove past it, as the location and view were not worth giving it a shot!

The place serve as play ground for all hockey cricket and football. It is a social meeting ground in he evening. it used to be one single ground( from one end to other) to start with. Now it has been divided in to three ground. All th major events takes place in this ground,
Famous Minjar fair to ( mark the seeding of the Maize crop) in The first week of August is held here, It is one of its kind fair in Himachal . You have cultural program during the week with games. At the end of the chaughan is Bhuri singh Museum ( the oldest Museum ) named after the Rajah of Chamba and civil hospital called Shayam Singh hospital, You stand in the center of the ground and can see the magnificent Rajmahal above you.
The ground is closed during the winter for the Maintenance and the grass to grow. At the corner there is stage for the artist to perform.
Have been living here for long and has seen this place trasform the place to present state. In the center there is large gate addressed as Gandhi gate besides the post office
where once upon a time a old man used sell Chhole ( Kabuli Chana) in leaves plates and that used to be treat after a foot ball or hockey game.

This is the famous Chowgan of Chamba, a sprawling ground in the city centre.
The important heritage buildings such as Chamba Court , police station all surrounds the Chowgan. The erstwhile palace of Chamba royal family also overlooks the ground.
Its an important place in the life of Chamba people, as they meet each other during the evening , relax and enjoy soaking the cool breeze.
The morning is the time when fitness freaks jog around the ground, and cricket enthusiasts shine their skills.
A visit to chamba is incomplete if you do not visit Chowgan

How far is Chamba from Pathankot Rly stn? How long does it take by taxi? Will the stay here be more peaceful than Dalhousie? Staying at Chamba, is it possible to cover Dalhousie in one day and come back?
