It's an ancient cave complex. Some say it's from mahabharata times. Some carvings of Buddha in meditating posture are on the walls, bit similar to ajanta

Not allowed to climb the place, only see from the ground.
The place is clean and well maintained.

Ancient artificial caves featuring carvings & inscriptions. The entry is free, the place has well maintained garden outside the cave. We hired a local guide @ Rs. 100 who explained the history of Swarn Bhandar, which is very interesting. It is said that the caves hold huge treasury of King Bimbisar, which can only be opened by secret words, which is written in Sankh Lipi. It is said that British Govt had tried to open the caves with landmines but failed to do so. The place is small, however well managed, neat and clean. A visit is recommended to this manmade cave to witness the history. Paid parking facility is available.

The legend goes that whosoever is able to read a strange inscription on the wall will be able to open the door guarding the treasure behind it. There isn't much to see here other than that. There is a person who acts as the guide and also the keeper, he does weave a slightly interesting story. So that isn't too bad.

This is an interesting monument - in that the name is misleading.
The first thing the guide (who also acts as the guard here) told us was that the name swarna bhandar (gold storage area) is not correct but because this was never used to store gold and that the name is just a myth created by over excited locals.

he then gives a pretty informed tour of the caverns but really doesnt add to much local info.
We stopped here only because it was on our way to another location but if you dont have time, you can miss it. Nothing really to see here.

Swarna Bhandar is an ancient site located in the town of Rajgir. Literally this place is also known as Bimbisara Bhandar or Sonbhandar. It is believed that the treasury of King Bimbisara is present in this cave

Can you imagine walls which are 5 to 7 feet wide. A huge campus of books at one time reduced to ashes, now the remains are in the form of brick walls telling its story. A piece of history needs to be visited to understand its massiveness.

Swarn bhandar or Son bhandar, as it is popularly known, used to be a treasure trove during the ancient times. Numerous invaders including the british tried to break open it but in vain. Taking a guide will cost around 50 INR but he will explain the intricacies of the monument.
