Beautiful, challenging climb. I recently did an 8 day climb through Rwenzori Trekking. It was tough, exhilarating and rewarding. Having done Kilimanjaro previously, I can safely say that Kilimanjaro is child’s play compared to the Rwenzoris. Rwenzori Trekking were super efficient and well organized.

We used Rwenzori Trekking Services, booking through Gane and Marshall. The organisation was faultless and everything ran like clockwork. I first dreamt of reaching the snowy peaks as a child, having seen the summits from Fort Portal and peering upwards through the car window winding around the northern flanks on route to Bundibugiyo. In 1985 I had the chance to get as far as Mutinda rock shelter as part of a 5-day Trek ascending the Nyamwamba and descending the Nyamugasani river valleys. Having climbed Kilimanjaro and Elgon in recent years I had an idea that this would be more strenuous. But I also knew it would be pretty spectacular. I expressed to my climbing buddy from the other trips that “this is the one!” - and so it proved. It is the most incredible mountain range I have been in. I am not a technical climber but there were some technical bits. These were perfectly and safely managed by the guides. Technical climbers could find some new routes and the rock is nice and grippy. It is not yet a rock climbers Mecca but it should be! The weather around Mutinda (3500m) seemed consistently drizzling but above 4000m it was dry and we summitted Mount Baker and then Mount Stanley with clear skies. Acclimatisation to the altitude is important and we were above 4000m for four days before climbing Mt Stanley. We were still breathless.
The vegetation zones are more defined than on Kilimanjaro, Kenya or Elgon and more luxuriant, taller and other worldly. This alone is a reason that this mountain range is a must do and should be on the usual published bucket lists. Saw a Rwenzori Turaco (another lifetime ambition of mine). The mountain ridges are jagged and steep and incredibly beautiful. The view of the peaks from Hunwick’s camp was wonderful. The air had that clarity of high altitude and there was complete silence. Unlike Kilimanjaro with its thousands of People we met only three other small groups. The Trek was every bit as organised as the Kilimanjaro climb and I suspect the mountaineering skills of the guides more developed.
We prepared by fellwalking in the Lake District where we live. Climbing the Rwenzori is not something to contemplate at short notice unless already pretty fit. The rewards in terms of the beauty of the climb, the interesting vegetation and the sense of achievement were for me worth every bit of the breathless experienced during the ascents or the preparation in the weeks / months leading up to the Trek.

Beautiful countryside all the way up. From hot and steamy at the start to frigid glaciers at the top. Friendly guides, tough porters. Prepare for very cold weather, including snow. Lots of mud along the trail, sometimes creating some hard going. The giant lobelia was incredible. Clouds and snow near the top thwarted out summit attempt, but really can't be too disappointed with several days of great hiking, beautiful views and met some really special people.

The 3rd highest but the best climb of the big 3 in Africa. Start in jungle work to a swamp then ice climb to the margarita summit. Mt Stanley is made up if a few but the tallest is margherita and Speke in 2nd

This was one of the greatest experiences of my whole life! I felt so safe the entire time, even when summiting the mountain at 5109 meters. My favorite part of the trip had to be my guides - RobertBasajja and Yosam. I highly recommend requesting them when doing this trip. They made sure I was always warm, happy, safe and always laughing. They taught me about culture and constantly checked in on me to make sure I was feeling okay and took it personally to make sure I was healthy and having fun the whole time.
The food was delicious and the accommodation was very comfortable in the most beautiful areas of the mountain. Rwenzori Trekking services was extremely professional and everyone involved makes sure you feel safe and happy. The porters were so helpful and kind too. I couldn't say enough great things about this experience - I wish I could do it a hundred more times!!

In December we did a 7 day hike to the summit of Margherita Peak, the third highest peak in Africa at 5100m.
Our trek was supposed to last 8 days but since my bag arrived a day late we had to do day 1-3 in 2 days. It caused a bit of altitude headache but we were fine after that. I recommend doing the hike in 8 days.
Rwenzori Trekking Services (RTS) was great. We got in touch before the holiday paid online and all our questions were answered promptly. They sent us a packing list and what we didn’t have we borrowed from them. (Sleeping bags). They also provide you with rubber wellies for the boggy sections, crampons, a harness and an ice axe for the glacier on summit day.
We had no previous experience with ice climbing but this was not a problem. They taught us the day before summit day and we got to practice putting on the crampons and attaching the jumar on the rope.
The hiking is tough! Way harder than Kilimanjaro. The trail is either steep, rocky and rooty or flat and boggy. But the flora and fauna and the views are amazing so it’s well worth it.
Our guide Edison was excellent and, as well as being very patient and knowledgeable about climbing skills and the natural environment of the Rwenzoris, he also told us a lot about his language and culture.
We had a group of porters who carried our luggage and food. Everyday when we arrived at camp (simple huts with mattresses) our bags were already there and a stove was on in the dining hut to warm ourselves by and to dry our clothes.
We had a choice of breakfast options; eggs, toast, porridge and pancakes. Lunch was usually made as a packed lunch, sometimes a sandwich with an apple and juice, other times potato salad.
The dinners were huge! Usually rice, pasta or potatoes with a mixture of vegetables in a sauce. The non-vegetarians really enjoyed the spaghetti Bolognese.
At the end of our trek we were asked to give feedback (both positive and negative) we also completed a feedback form. It seems that RTS has been listening to all the feedback they have received over the years because we could hardly think of any improvements.
It is always hard to know what to tip the porters and the guide but we discussed this with other hikers on the trail and agreed on the following; $5 per day per porter and $10 per day for our guide. We handed the total (in Shilling) to the head porter as he knew which porters had been on our trip for 3 days and which ones had been there for seven.
I would definitely recommend hiking with Rwenzori Trekking Services (RTS) as they manage and maintain their own trails very well and the camps are clean (much cleaner than the two camps we passed that are managed by RMS.
