Our favorite beach for the summer, we were here more than half a dozen times. We came here the first time and laid the towels out on the sand but every other time, we rented chairs and umbrellas for the day from O Amarelo/Yellow Beach. Very convenient as it is just a short train ride from Cais do Sodre to the Santo Amaro stop and then just a few blocks walk down the hill to the beach through the tunnel under the main road. This is a large beach with great sand for hanging out or playing some beach sports on days where it is a bit quieter. There are not a lot of restaurants on the boardwalk here but there are plenty of licensed concession vendors walking around with snacks and drinks. Outdoor showers to rinse off and public restrooms are near the main entrance of this very large beach. Some areas of the shoreline are a little rockier than others but not so bad that you cannot go barefoot with a little care. If you are not familiar with the beaches in Portugal around this area---get ready....the water is NOT warm even in the hottest part of the summer. What the locals will do is get hot in the sun and then go to the cold water to stand for a few minutes (typically up to the thighs) and then back to the sun. And repeat hourly.

This is a really large clean beach about five minutes from the station. A pleasant walk through Oeiras valley to reach as an alternative

Can be somewhat crowded, but it is relatively large and enables a good beach experience.
Clear (and cold) waters with some wind in the afternoon

If you get by train, then this is the nearest beach worthy of Lisbon. It takes 5 minutes to walk from the station. There is a cafe and a McDonald's nearby.

The Santo Amaro beach is well located and easily reached from different locations. We usually go there using the Passeio Maritime which connects Carcavelos and Paco de Arcos. At the beach itself you find all you need to pas a nice day at the water.

It does not have many choices of chairs and sunshine, the only one that has is full of restrictions type: you can not drink or eat anything that has not been bought at the restaurant, you can not sit in the chairs more than 2 people (bad when you have family) etc... A big list of things you can't do under the sun. It just makes you lose customers.
Beautiful beach but without structure.
Wheelchairs are a good thing.
