Our group of 8 started our tour in Zhangye, through Dunhuang, Turpan, Urumqi and ended in Kashgar- that's 1,600 miles! Hard imagine how the merchants traveled this ancient route walking and on camel backs! Our three guides, Orlando, Momin and Abdul, all spoke fluent English and were friendly and accommodating and made us feel safe throughout the trip. Orlando even sang with us karaoke style in the van! The guides were knowledgeable in their respective regions and generous in sharing their Uighur history and culture with us. We learned a lot! Lodgings were on par and meals were plentiful. If you like lamb, you'll be in for a treat! I most enjoyed the Jiaohe Ancient City ruins in Turpan, the beautiful scenery along the KKH, Urumqi and Kashgar's night markets and city walks. Tidbits that Momin and Abdul shared during these walks were both entertaining and educational. IMHO, good tour guides can be the difference between a so-so trip and an amazing trip. And This Trip Was Amazing! One tip though: Always have your own toilet paper on outings..for the bathrooms, squat style, will not have "a square to spare". Ali joined us for our last meal in Kashgar and asked the group how he could improve on the tour. I was impressed that even though he's been doing this tour for many years, he still strived to make the experience even better for his customers. In Summary, I highly recommend Ali and his team to anyone who's thinking about exploring this part of the world. You won't regret it.

We just came back from our amazing 12-day custom tour arranged by Ali and his wonderful team! After lot of research on TA, I got two quotes for a custom tour from two highly rated tour groups and ultimately selected Ali as his quote fitted our budget more. Then for almost the next 9 months, I had a lot of email communication with Ali finetuning our itinerary, hotel requests, re-quotes etc as our group size started to increase etc. Throughout, he was always very responsive and patient and when he got very busy, his partner Lily would step in and she was equally responsive. (As partners, Lily handles more of the Gansu region of the trip while Ali manages the Xinjiang side.) Since we were going to a somewhat “sensitive” region, although all of us had gone to China before, this time around to get the visas, it was a more laborious process; however, Ali and Lily provided all the necessary documentation in a timely manner. Once in China, it was best to text the staff/guides via weChat for more immediate needs. Our 12-day Silk Road route took us from Gansu: Zhangye, Jiayuguan, Dunhuang then to Xinjiang: Turpan, Urumqi, Kashgar, Tashkurgan, Shipton’s Arch. Our guides were all very professional, accommodating and flexible to requested changes in our itinerary. Along the way, there were security checkpoints in hotels, various destinations and roads/highways, but our guides helped us to efficiently navigate through those. The eight of us were a group of 50/60 + yr olds and our guides were good at gauging our pace as we sometimes peetered out a bit through all the transport via planes, trains and vans/shuttles. Then they would shift activities in the itinerary to accommodate our energy levels. They were also mindful of food preferences we had. We appreciated Orlando while in Gansu who was especially helpful in making sure our camel riding groups were able to stay together and in capturing all our group experiences. In Turpan and Urumqi, we loved being guided by the ever jovial Mominjohn, who created many memorable local experiences for us from enjoying hami melons in the fields to dancing in the town square bazaar. And in Kashgar, we really appreciated being guided by the ever knowledgeable Abdul. We learned so much from him of the local customs and history while enjoying good eats like samsa, sipping delicious fresh squeezed pomegranate juice, and sampling different fragrant teas. It was a pleasure to meet Ali on our last nite by having dinner together. Also special kudos to our drivers in the Xinjiang area, as those rides were particularly long and the roads not always the best. We always felt safe and their vans were clean and in good condition. All in all, we would not hesitate in recommending Ali and his team for a truly culturally rich adventure. From the start, he instills trust and confidence that your trip will be handled smoothly and that you will be well taken care of by his team once on tour.

I dealt with Ali and Lily to arrange for a customized 18-day silk road family tour. Most of the time I talked to Ali. Both of them can communicate well in English. Ali is a very honest and helpful person. We didnt manage to finish the entire trip due to accident but we enjoyed the first half of our journey very much. He always tried his best to fulfil our requirements and he offered assistance without any hesitance when we needed him though he was not physically with us. It was a great eye opening to explore Xinjiang, with nice scenery, fruitful culture, prescious history and great people in Xinjiang who are always being caring, friendly, honest and kind. You will fall in love with this place. If I had to comment on some minor improvement, it would the tour guide in Kashgar and Heavenly Lake. Dont get me wrong, both were still good. The tour guide in Kashgar was caring and she explained a lot, though she was in hurry mood a few time. And the tour guide in Heavenly Lake was too young and not detailed enough, she was very responsible though. Overall, I would definitely recommend China Silk Road Tours to my friends. I will engage them again if I am going to revisit silk road in future.

Itinerary: excellent Service: excellent Food: excellent Experience: excellent Recommend? yes! Here is my experience on this 11-day Silk Road tour. Before our trip, I was somewhat concerned about the security and being retained in China from the information of current events in the Silk Road regions my family and I found in the media. My decision to go ahead was absolutely the right one. This trip was very safe and nothing short of a great life-time experience--thanks to the great itinerary of Ali and the excellent accommodation from his team (Lilia, Orlando, Momin and Abdul)! Our tour started in ZhangYe and ended Kashgar. My group flew in Shanghai to stay a couple days. Then flew to LanZhou to take a high-speed train to ZhangYe. Booking the train tickets in advance (via trip.com) and having them delivered to the hotel in Shanghai was a time saver. Pre-installing WeChat and having a China SIM card (which can be purchased in Shanghai) enabled us to communicate with each other and Ali’s team anytime/anywhere. When we were in Urumqi and Kashgar areas, there were many checkpoints and metal detectors, but they were quite quick and painless. Some kids were playing and biking in their neighborhood without adults. We felt very safe. The food was great and the sceneries were breath taking. It’s hard to pick a favorite place/activity because there were so many to chose from. My favorites were walking in Urumqi and Kashar local markets and the day trip to the Shipton’s Arch. Thank you Ali and the Xinjiang Silk Road Tours team!

We went on a 11-day tour from Zhangye to Kashgar perfectly organized by SilkRoad tours. We visited Zhangye, Jiayuguan, Dunhuang, Turpan, Urumqi, Tashkorgan, and Kashgar. Congratulations to Ali and his team for bringing us to the various sights at the right time, and the best spot for the best views. We appreciated the personal attention we received by the team. We really enjoyed visiting China's ancient silk road!
