When it comes to Maotai liquor, you have to talk about Maotai Town, which is famous for making Maotai. Maotai Town has always been a famous town in northern Guizhou Province. It is located on the bank of Chishui River in Renhuai City, surrounded by mountains and in a dangerous situation. Maotai Town is called the sacred place of Chinese liquor, and the liquor industry in the area has flourished. In 1915, Maotai Liquor won the gold medal at the Panama World Expo. In 1935, the Red Army of the Chinese Workers and Farmers crossed the Chishui River in Maotai during their long march. Maotai Town combines ancient salt culture, Long March culture and liquor culture, and is known as "China's No. 1 Liquor producer." It is reported that as early as 135 BC, the ancient Maotai area produced a fruit liquor that Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty found “the sweetest”. That fruit liquor was the predecessor of Maotai as we know it.

In the heart of China's Guizhou Province, Maotai Town, renowned for producing the legendary Maotai liquor, offered a unique blend of cultural heritage and sensory experiences. Strolling through this tranquil town, the air was perfumed with the distinct aroma of fermenting sorghum. Visiting the Maotai distilleries, I witnessed the time-honored process of brewing this famous spirit, a tradition deeply rooted in local history. The warm hospitality of the townsfolk, combined with the chance to sample this esteemed beverage, made my visit both educational and enjoyable. Maotai Town is not just about its iconic liquor; it's a journey into the heart of China's spirited history.

This is a pretty town that is the home of the famous Maotai spirit drink. The whole town seems to be dependent on the factory but it does not detract from the charm.

About an hour or two away by car from Zunyi, where we were staying, you can find MaoTai, the eponymous town that produces the wonderful Bai Jiu. Nice place, great buildings and architecture, and there is a good museum on strong drinks and how these are produced. My dissapointment was equally great to find that the beautiful bar on the top floor was closed! The drive takes you through the beautiful mountain scenery around Zunyi as an added bonus.
