The Ancient city of Langzhong has one of the biggest areas of old towns in China and probably all over the world. Very well preserved, the wooden buildings are home to shops selling traditional products like Vinegar, silk worms snacks and so much more , and real home for the old Langzhong inhabitants. A daily flood of tourists animates the old City since morning till late night. A few museums , among which the Fengshui Museum are not to be forgotten when visit.

Unlike many other artificial "ancient towns" that were built with cement in recent years, the old houses and courtyards in Langzhong are original. As a major tourist attraction in Sichuan, it has not been ruined by commercialization. You can still see local residents living their daily life there. You can even saw two schools and a kindergarten hidden among the old houses.

The waterfront boulevard was rebuilt in recent years. If you have time, walk from the tourist center northbound along the water. On the other side of Jialing river, the scenery is just magnificent.

If the weather happens to be drizzling and rainy, don't be frustrated. It would be a perfect time to wander along those narrow streets and alleys. With other tourists hidden in their hotels, you will own the quiet town to yourself, and enjoy the surreal feeling of travelling back to time.

Langzhong is one of the few places in western China where you can see a real old town without overt commercialism. It feels natural and the people are so friendly. There some wonderful old wooden traditional courtyard-style family hotels but unfortunately they are not on TripAdvisor's hotel list. I recommend the He Jia family hotel if you can speak a little Chinese. It's in Xiaxin St and is very cheap and very clean. Was great to be in a genuinely old house, not a reproduction.

This is a very nice old town. It's a lot smaller than Lijiang but definitely less touristy. It's good to visit soon before large throngs of international (and local) tourist groups invade the place.

We stayed 2 nights within the old town which gave us more than sufficient time to comb through the town at a leisurely pace. However, one night will suffice if you are an efficient traveler. There are loads of courtyard inns within the old town. We visited most of them and they do vary quite a fair bit in standard and price. It's not necessary to book your accommodation in advance unless your stay clashes with the Chinese golden week or public holiday.

There are small teahouses/cafes/food outlets scattered throughout the old town. We ate all our meals within the old town. Do try their specialties - beef noodles, beef/lamb hotpot and glutinous rice with pork.

Most attractions have admission fees. Purchase the combined ticket if you intend to visit them. We enjoyed the visit to Langzhong Examination House most.

If you are traveling from Chengdu, I would suggest that you take the direct bus to Langzhong from the northern bus station at Chengdu. Journey time is about 3.5 hours and buses depart every hourly. This may be overall faster than traveling from Chengdu to Nanchong (1hr 40 mins by fastest train), followed by Nanchong to Langzhong (1hr 20 mins by bus) because you will lose time during the train-bus transit. Moreover, you may not be able to purchase the earliest time slot for the fastest train. We couldn't and had to take the bus from Nanchong back to Chengdu (2.5 hrs). From the bus station at Langzhong, you will need to take a cab (10-15 mins/10-15 yuan) to the old town.

I really liked this city and am grateful to our hosts for taking us to Langzhong. Although surrounded by a large modern city, the ancient center is wonderfully maintained and, as someone else said, not commercialized, at least not too much yet.

I think, of all the old cities I have visited in China, this one comes closest to answering what a city would have been like a hundred years ago. Or a thousand. There are winding, narrow streets with some great old homes and palaces interspersed, a wonderful tall pagoda you can ascend, and the House of Examinations where students came to pass their examinations and be admitted into the royal courts.

We stayed in a beautiful hotel - I wish I knew the name - that had been a wealthy merchant's house and was over 1000 years old. They have a theater in one of the courtyards that does shadow shows - wonderful to see and at the end, they let us come up and perform the puppets. (Its not far from the Pagoda.) And, directly across the river is also a beautiful set of temples and palaces, in gardens well worth seeing.

We did not see many - or any - Western tourists but we may have been there at an off season. I would expect American and European tours are very familiar with this gracious old city. Otherwise, as in most of China, you need a guide or someone who speaks Chinese with you. But well worth visiting.

You can go there by public bus in few hours (they say 3, I say 5) from Chengdu and it is a pleasent trip through the lush sichuanese countriside. Once there, begin your trip in the feng shuei museum, which has a 3d model of the city and the sourrououndings spot and let you understand why it is where it is Then go around freely in the old alleys which are still in the original Ming shape. In the evening, you ca see a uppet show or liten the songs from the river boat. Hurry up, because they are building the airport and the "untouched2 feeling that has the city no, I am afraid will soon disappear.

A small town with ancient buildings. If you have known the book of Three Kingdoms, you would like to visit the place where was the final place of ZhangFei. There are much more stories related to the three kingdoms. It’s easy to get to Langzhong from ChengDu. You can plan a day trip from ChengDu by taking the train at 7:48 am, arriving LangZhong at 10:30 am, then take a bus from the train station to the entrance of the ancient town. After 6 hours, you can get on the train at 4:45 pm and back to ChengDu around 7:08 pm. There are many restaurants in the town, but food is spicy. People in the town are friendly. ZhangFei Beef is the most famous dish in the town.

Langzhong Old City sits on a big river bend and has a large area of old streets and tiled roofed 'old buildings', and a few visitable temples and sites. The charm of this quiet tourist town is that it is not too developed and has an unhurried pace on the streets and lanes of the large protected area. The car free zone is large and full of Chinese tourist shops, eating houses and beautiful old courtyard hotels. There are many options for accomodation in attractive and interesting historical buildings in the old precinct, but there is little to no English spoken, and taxis only to the edges of the 'Old City'. Good place for a laid back couple of days exploring a real slice of China among friendly people and with great food whilst watching sunsets over the river and sea of tiled roofs

After left it for two years, I was back this April. I am glad to see this developing ancient town becoming more organized, more interesting and more convenient for tourists. We can take train from Chengdu to here. It only takes two hours. There are more greens in the town. I visited Teng Wang temple for cherry blossom festival , and had many nice local food near Yuchi square . Even just walking along the river bank is a wonderful thing. Walking around is a good way to feel the local people ' lives and local lifestyle. It is not just attractions and is about a genuine lifestyle here, as local people more care about enjoy their life than worry about earning money from tourism.

Langzhong Ancient Town is one of Four Great Towns of China, toghter with Lijiang ancient town, Pingyao ancient town and Huizhou ancient two. But when I traveled there, I found that there were no many crowd tourists there. Many tourist sites in the town, such as Zhangfei Temple, Academy Administrative Office, Confucious' Temple, Geomancy Pavilion, Sichuan Examination Hall and so on.
