Built to the exact dimensions of ancient cities, this place is incredible! Lots of filming crew around so expect to see some movie stars. anyone can film their movies here for free but they have to film it in front of the paying crowd.... Loved every minute of it

The visit to Heng Dian Studios was an all girls trip for my 80 year old mum and me.
We were so glad that we got China Highlights Tour company to plan the trip for us.
They did a really efficient job from the airport pickup at Shanghai to the high speed train to Yiwu. From there we were met by our very own guide, the wonderful Tina.
More on Tina and our driver in another review.
Heng Dian is massive.
We only covered part of it in the course of one afternoon and the next morning.
Be enthralled by the imposing entrance and first sight of the Chin (Jin) palace.
You can play dress up and be an emperor or empress and get your photos taken.
The Ming and Ching palace is also worth a visit and you can see a show that chronicles this period in history.
If you're into Chinese dramas, you'll get a thrill recognising some of the places here such as the non descript title of the auxillary corridor where many battles have been staged or where the hero meets the heroine. Sigh....
Anyway, if you do have the time, make room for this place in your itinerary.
It's a two hour drive from Hangzhou.

Hengdian World Studios is a great combination of a few attractions with different themes, including a night theme park. These attractions include the Qing and Ming Palace, Guangzhou and Hong Kong Street, Imperial Palace of Qin, Along the River during Qingming Festival, Residence of the Ming and QIng Dynasty, Huaxia Cultural Garden, Rocky Grottos and Dazhi Temple as well as Dream Valley. All attractions have different entrance fees but you can get a combination of different attractions for a special price. Do bear in mind that children and elders (above 60 years old) have 30% discount and apply to foreigner as well.

I managed to visit only Ming and QIng Palace, Qin Dynasty and Guangzhou and Hong Kong Street and this require at least 2 days in Hengdian. Overall, the attractions were good and interesting.

However, the only turn off are the touts all around the town. For first time visitor to these attractions, please get enough informations from the internet. Or these touts will come and asked you to buy the entrance tickets from them. No harm as they are selling the tickets same as the entrance counter but you will definitely get a cheaper rate for a combination ticket.

Also, these attractions are very big so it will involves a lot of walking. You can rent a bicycle at the entrance but I would recommende this for Qing and Ming Palace. I did not rent one though, but walking the whole QIng and Ming Palace will takes 3-4 hours including sightseeing.

Plan your trip well and I am sure you will enjoy your stay in Hengdian!

This is an interesting combination of a working movie studio and an amusement park. I saw three different shows day the day I visited, the first was acrobatic, the second was based on a story of 8 historic prostitutes (or so I was later told), and the third was a wild night-time outdoor spectacle with water fountains, strobe lights, a volcanic eruption and a variety of objects that floated through the air. The extensive replica of the Qin imperial area is quite amazing. All of the sets have a very authentic feel to them. Unlike Hollywood movie studios, the sets are actual buildings, not just facades. I did see filming going on in one area and saw actors on a break in another area. This is located well off the beaten path, and the closest train station is in Yiwu, Zhejiang, so it is recommended for the truly dedicated movie buff.

Went to Hengdian from Shanghai via train to Yiwu, which is 1.5hrs away. After that, the taxi takes another hour to reach Hengdian. The rail was comfortable with the mid-tier ticket. We stayed at a hotel near the Qin palace so it was just a short walk there, around the various attractions there is a free shuttle bus but there is a n additional line over what was on their website so it was abit confusing. Fortunately, the bus driver always hollered if he sees anyone at the bus-stop looking lost (like us).

Qin palace is nice but I find the real forbidden palace much better than the copy in Hengdian. It is huge and hot when we go, so we opt for a bicycle/tricycle right away upon arrival at the Forbidden palace. The horse show stunts is a must see at the Forbidden palace, its really good. I didnt like the bao yu shan hong (storm show) at the amusement park in the evening. Lots of snazzy light with a real simulated flood but without much storyline. The afternoon show at Forbidden palace about the history of modern china is real good too, much like a stage play. Qingming shanghe tu (qing picture place) was a disappointment and I rather visit a real water village like Zhou Zhuang or Zhu Jia Jiao near Shanghai.

We didnt visit the HK retro place so cant comment. The Hengdian town is cute with young aspiring performers singing and doing skateboard stunts on their own accord. But that is about it.

We spent 2 nights there and I think it is quite sufficient unless you want to cover all the sets. Food options are limited, mostly local fare with KFC and starbucks at specific places. I think it is worth a go for a short stay if you are already living in China and provided you do understand some mandarin. It is really a very local hangout.

The whole place in nutshell: stage for many Chinese movies, great place to selfies and scenery, not so crowded.

Longer version - keep reading.

Many movie scenery that are still today use to shoot new movies. Some of the location like Ming and Ging dynasty villages were very great to walk around and take photos in nice background.

One can rent a costume of Han, Tang or Ging dynasty (men and women) and walk in the set posing like in ancient China. Had my doubts at first but it ended up being fun.

They have 7 different sets and fun-park with machines and dolphin show.

For 178 RMB, this is a reasonable cost to experience where the many of the famous Chinese Hollywood Movies are made. There are props, buildings like the Forbidden City, play stages, and staged acts re-enactments throughout the scheduled day. Definitely a place to visit if you are into the Chinese films. You can easily spend the whole day here of course. There are costume fittings you can take part in for a fee but it makes a great souvenir. Even see backstage makeup rooms too. Food, drinks and souvenirs are available everywhere. Of course its more expensive but we have budgeted for it and wanted to be lighter in our travels rather than be bogged down with water and snacks of our own.
As it does get hot here under the sun, go seek shelter at the plays scheduled for air conditioned environment, covered walkways and pathways, eating areas, exhibition areas. If you need to be outside for photos, every so often, they will have cooling mists of water come out to cool you off so take advantage of those too.
