It's a big and charming cave, worth the visit, although there are some weird toys along the visit. It's private and it belongs to a nice gentleman who put all his time and heart to this place.
The visit is free, however it is recommended to make a donation to help the owner maintaining the cave.

Cova Bastera is free to enter but they appreciate a contribution towards lighting as you leave. There are 124 steps to climb in three stages - my husband managed it with his two recently new hips. Take a jumper due to the temperature change. It is worth a visit - it is part of the history of the town and Vaubaun.

Cova Bastera is part of UNESCO-recognized World Heritage in Villefranche-de-Conflent, and it is free to enter. There are several large caves that adjoin a fortified chamber used in the past for defense of the city. History buffs - and World Heritage chasers such as myself - will find it reasonably interesting and worth half an hour or so. Unfortunately, it pales in comparison to the nearby Grottes des Canalettes. If you go to the latter first, you may be completely unimpressed by what you see in Cova Bastera.

We found Cova Bastera right across the road from Villefranche de Conflent. It said outside and the signs inside that they had dinosaurs exibited (our 4 year old was very excited), but we found none in the caves. The caves are interesting, but the signs inside are only in French. Though, this attraction is free of charge, so we would go again.
Compared to the Les grandes Canalettes (fantastic), were we went first, this was a disappointment.

Nice caves with stalactites and natural pool. Set with lights and a projection. 1 km approximately round trip. Look, it's full of stairs up and down.

Bonjour, peux-t-on se balader avec les chiens dans la grotte (sachant que nous avons sachets à déjections) ?
