Following the Furkapass you pull in at the stop by the Belvedere Hotel. There is a gift shop & cafe. To enter the glacial field & walk down to the lake & into the glacial cave you have to pay 9CHF. There is a rubble path that goes down to the glacial lake with info points on the way. You get close to the glacial stones & views up the Rhone glacier. The ice/glacial cave is covered with tarpaulin to prevent melt, so doesn't look real. The tunnel through the glacier is short but you get to see all the colours in the glacier. Worth it ? Not sure !!
On a hot day the cool environment was great.

They way up to the rhone glacier was amazing, especially for those who love to drive.
The panorama and the glacier itself were amazing. We were quite surprised while paying the entry tickets since one had to pay 1 franc more per person if you pay by card! What made me angry was the fact that the old woman didnt even tell me that they charge you an extra ( which would have been totally fine).

Came here as we were driving the Furka pass. Paid to visit the glacier and went in the melting ice cave. I thought it was pretty cool to do although it is a tourist trap. Stars dropped for still charging for toilets even after paying entry. Charging for toilets is a scam we did not pay and managed to find free toilets elsewhere.

I wouldn't know how magnificent the glacier is, because I wasn't able to see it, for the large shop and fencing in the way. I was talked to very rudely by a staff member of the ice grotto when we arrived 10 minutes past their closing time. The woman berated me for not coming earlier in the day, I explained that we had NO idea that the viewing area was completely private, or that the only way to view/access the glacier was through their shop. Even when I told her we drove 2 hrs to see it, I was told they opened the next day at 8am and that I should have known better. I have no problems paying to see it, but there should be a way for people to access a viewing area from a different location, or put coins into a turnstile for after hours. It's summer! It's light out till 9pm!

We parked at Bellavista. Apparently, you can only see the glacier up close if you go through the souvenir shop and pay CHF 7 per person. Other options: take a look from afar (but then you can barely see the glacier/snow itself, at least in summer) or hike from the hotel to the glacier (30' hike).
I don't understand why tourists should pay that much just to have look! I find it outrageous that the owner of the souvenirshop is building a wall around the shop to force people to pay if they want to see the glacier (unless they are willing/able to hike 2x 30 minutes)!

This was my second visit in 30 years, it was a great disappointment having seen the glacier in its heyday, then able to walk under the blue ice and look up at the cliff wall of ice. Now it has receded a couple of K up the valley, is a polluted black colour, and the "ice cave" is just a outcrop of dripping ice covered in canvas sheeting. My recommendation is to choose another glacier to visit, however the rest of the valley scenery is good.

In the year 2003, we were looking to escape the great heat wave so we drove through the Alps looking for fresh air and we came across to this area so decided to spent the night at the Belvedere hotel (the one at the corner, closed); Mr. Carlen (who checked us in) explained about the works in the glacier, we visited and I remember apart the tunnels a twisted ice column, wine barrels, I was impressed… the ice grotto entrance was just a few steps exactly around the corner of the souvenir shop… over the next 3 years we visited though we noticed no significant changes… then we did not drive through the Furka Pass for over 10 years because this is usually a detour for where we go… after all these years we decided to visit again the summer of 2017… All the news and documentaries about retreating glaciers and this is one vivid example… the position where was located the first ice grotto visited (2003-2006) now is nothing but naked rock and a lake with water that falls copiously (these waters goes to Lake Geneva then all the way to south France) It was a huge but huge mass of solid ice… not interested to fingerpoint who is responsible of this, just will say if in the area, visit this nature wonder before it disappears completely. I still enjoyed this visit but with quite sad feelings…

P.S. There is a scene in the film Goldfinger that shows where the glacier was in the 60’s

The drive up to the glacier is hair raising in that the road is very windy and has a steep ascent, but the views on the way up are amazing so if you can handle the heights it's well worth the drive. The glacier itself has receded astronomically from when I was last there and it was a bit shocking to see, but still a very beautiful area. Going inside the glacier is also a once in a lifetime experience as you are surrounded by the huge glacier. The path down is slippery and not for those with wheelchairs or have mobility problems.

Interesting to go inside the Rhone glacier into the ice cave however its not worth the 15 Euros/person. A typically tourist trap with great scenery outside the cave.

I still remember the day! I was maybe ten years old, my sister was eight (it was around 2000/2001 then, maybe 2002), it was July or August. As any inhabitant of the northern half of Canton Ticino, me and my family wanted to go in Vallemaggia and take a bath in the river (it was really really hot, something like 32 °C). When we arrived, the riverside was full of turists and there was no place for us to stay. We were pretty sad, but then my father said "well, I know another place we can go to escape the heat", and we went to the Rhone glacier (two hours by car from Locarno, a lot of alpine sceneries that I always loved as a child). As soon as I went INSIDE the glacier, I thought I was in another world, I can't even describe how I felt back then. It was summer, so the glacier itself was obviously kind of small, but big enough to be appreciated. We ended the day drinking hot chocolate, this is one of the fondest memories of my childhood.
I'd like to return one day, but I think children appreciate this kind of things a lot more, I mean, walking inside a frozen mountain during summer, how cool is that (no pun intended)? I recommend this to anyone, it's an outstanding experience and my favorite place in my country, but families are the most likely to like this place for me, it's great for kids!
