- Merely F22 contributionsCaves, lakes and forgotten temples secluded within magnificent hills.Great sculptures in a set of four caves. Most of the sculptures are intact, the idols and paintings are gone. But the sculptures are very beautiful. Most of them are of Vishnu in his various avatars and one cave is for Jains. Along with this, the Bhutanath temple should also be visited. This is situated on the opposite side of the lake share and can be seen form the caves. It has a relaxing ambience with a small grass lawn on the side.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 30, 2023
- Girish SPune, India10 contributionsOne great experienceThis is one of the main reasons why you would visit Badami. A lot of information is already available, I have only a few tips to offer. Try to plan an early morning visit ( we were at the entrance gate at 6 .15 am) for a peaceful experience. Later, it became quite crowded and a bit inconvenient. The parking at the base of the hill is free, but you need to reach early to find a place. Otherwise, park at the main road and take a tuk tuk to the hills. You can easily walk to the hill as well ( about 10-12 mts). The walk is through the crowded locality. I'm not sure anything can be done about this, but it's a heritage site, so if we can manage to build a cleaner locality, the approach road will be so much better.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 6, 2024

- pawanjit s50 contributionsBadami caves and local transportWe visited Badami, as it had been on the wishlist for a long time. After Hampi we took a cab with Driver Rasool, mobile number +91-9886195468 Rasool drove us to Aihole, Pattadakal, on day 1, and dropped us to Hubli Airport on day 2(Rs 2000, for day1 and Rs 3300 for day 2) He is tireless, generous with his time, very friendly, loves to talk and gave us a good idea of the geography, history and politics of the region He is a very good driver, keeps his car well maintained, and he is safe. I'd say he is safe around single women as well Overall we had a much better experience because of Rasool and his cab. The ASI museum is fantastic as are the caves. The temples at Aihole and Pattadakal are amazing But I feel if one is short on time then Hampi alone is quite satisfyingVisited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 11, 2024

These were built by Chalukyas around 6th century and there are 4 Temples. 1 for Shiva, 2 for Vishnu and 1 Jain. There is a Buddha cave also which is open. The art work on the caves is mesmerizing and very intricate carvings. Neatly done on a single rock. Suggest to have a guide so that you don't miss the details of the carvings. A must visit place.

This site is a must visit for all those interested in history, culture and art. And if one is visiting Badami, highly recommend visiting Aihole and World Heritage Site Pattadakal as well. What makes the whole experience of visiting these sites come alive is a really good guide. One experienced in the area, passionate about history and a great story teller. One such guide is Kotresh with phone number +91-9448440220 and +91- 7829071907. Mr Kotresh was born in Aihole and has spent 19 years as a tourist guide for this region and all the three sites mentioned above. He is also engaged with his village panchayat and various issues and there is almost nothing about this area he does not know - even recommending delicious snacks and food of this region. We discovered the delish Karadante from him.

Badami caves is a must do, when in north Karnataka. The caves though have suffered the passage of time, but is still very interesting. The carvings, the statues etc...imagine being cut into the stone directly. In total there are 4 cave temples, 3 belonging to Hindu Gods and the last one for Bhagwan Mahavir. There is one another cave, which kind of gives a feeling of the kind of accommodation the earliest human may have had. Oh by the way, the caves also provide a super view of the entire Badami area.
Pro tip: Not very decent hotels nearby, but if you proceed about 5-6 kms towards Pataddkkal, there are 2-3 good ones.

The Badami cave temples are group temples that are cut out of sandstone rocks which surrounds the Agastya Lake. Magnificent architecture and sculptures. Badami was the erstwhile capital of Chalukyas dynasty. It is located on the banks of Agastya Theertha (a serene lake ). One can easily spend 4-6 hours doing sight seeing of the badami caves,
archeological museum , Northern Hill Trek to Shiv Temples followed by visit to Bhootnath Temple. The place is well connected from train/bus station by local autos. I would say reserve one day for badami sight seeing and one day for Pattadakal and Aihole. It is suitable for Solo Couple, Family, Bachelors , School/College Excursion group. One can easily reach Badami via Road (Private cars) , Bus and Train from

Stunning sculptures.Needs Climbing lot of steps. Climate was perfect being monsoon. Heard it's normally very hot and need to fight exhaustion due to heat. But it's worth the pain and if you are a history/architecture lover, then this place it a must see place.
With minimum crowd, it took 2 hours to see the whole place. View of Agasthya lake with the Bhoothnath temple and the hillside in the background is breath taking.
Next you can take the path to Bhoothnath temple. Very narrow streets and poor hygienic conditions. Don't try to take your car. If you cannot walk, then take an auto...it's just less than 1.5kms. You will pass thru ASI museum and Badami fort entrance.
On the way back, you can visit Badami fort. Take a guide. I had met one Mr. Raaju(+919986266209). He speaks English and was more a friend than a guide. But remember to wear your shoes and be prepared for 30mins of Climbing.

The Badami cave temples are a complex of three Hindu and one Jain temple from the 6th century. These are rock-cut cave architecture, the earliest of its kind in the Deccan. The beautiful carvings are a sight to see, the best part is they are still very well preserved. They are full of tales on different avatars of Shiva and Vishnu.

These temples are amazing and what wonderful views of the city cut in rock. The climb is vertical on stairs but no railings so if you have balance issues be careful. You got great views and get to see lots of monkeys. The only problem was if you are a foreigner travelling during covid you have difficulty using their electronic payment.

This is a great place to visit to see how the 4 caves have been carved - it is imposing, beautiful and great to take some wonderful lifetime pics. Adequate parking is available. Beware of the monkeys especially near the cave 1 as they are notorius in snatching bags/food items. There is a beautiful lake (agastya lake) next to it - it is very calm, serene and looks great when in pic as well!

Thank you for the very informative blog. Is it possible to start early from Hampi to Badami and return by night? In that case, what are the best places to see in Badami?
Written October 31, 2022
Yes, a day is sufficient for sight seeing in badami. All the sight seeing places are situated close to each other. Once you reach badami caves , leave your vehicle in the parking and cover remaining places by walk.
How much you want to see in badami depends upon your taste in archaeology and ancient history. One can spend quality time in badami caves and badami fort ( fort was not open for tourist in September , dont know about current status) and archaeological museum and finish their tour. Otherwise (based on your interest) you can go for a short trek at northern hills to see Upper/Lower Shivalaya , Bhootnath Temple. You may not get quality refreshment options near badami caves except water bottle , fruits, biscuits ,cold drinks , chips etc. For proper meal you have come to the main town to find some restaurants. Hope this helps.

Are Badami Caves open for visitors now? One site says they are temporarily closed. Am planning to visit in November. Is it better to stay in Hubballi and drive down or are there good hotels near the caves?
Written September 24, 2021
Hi. Planning on visiting Hampi on November 28th. What are the travel options to visit Badami, Pattadakkal and Aihole on the 29th? Are there public buses early in the morning (from Hospet, perhaps)..
If a taxi is the best way, how much would a round trip cost?
TIA :)

thank you.
could you specify the road conditions and the preferred routes given we intend to drive down to badami and hampi from mumbai
Written September 3, 2019
You can reach via Belgaum. The roads are good (not sure after the recent devastating flood). From Badami, the best route to Hampi is via Hospet. Once again it is a state road and would advice a bit of caution since the roads will be ravaged due to the recent heavy rains.
