It lie on the axis of the Naviglio Grande and from its tower the navigation along the canal toward Milan could be controlled .
In the 15th century it was one of the preferred places of residence of the dukes and duchesses of Milan.

The Visconti Castle is one of the most important monuments of the city. Built at the end of the 13th century on the remains of a pre-existing fortress, it was the residence of the dukes of Milan, first the Viscontis and then the Sforzas. The history of the castle tells that it was traditionally given to the wives of dukes as a wedding gift, almost all the Lords of Milan were born here. With the end of the Sforza dynasty, the castle lost importance and was reduced to a fortress. Over the years it has suffered numerous destructions, it only retains the remains of a tower and elegant mullioned windows. It is accessed by a masonry bridge with two arches, the structure is simple, the pointed arches that delimit the internal courtyard are very beautiful. In 1862 the Municipality purchased it, it houses the Municipal Library and other offices, and is home to temporary exhibitions and exhibitions set up in the basement. On the day of our visit, entry was free and there was a very interesting painting exhibition "THE COLORS OF MY LIFE". Don't miss to visit it.
