Cruise and Hotel around Disko Bay

Greenland is an amazing country to visit. An old traveller saying expresses "when you have travelled many countries there is always Greenland left". Well, it is big and it is fantastic. Unfortunately also expensive! Because my daughter was working as a medical doctor in Greenland for three month I had the opportunity to stay in Greenland for 45 days and saw the icebergs, the wales, the glaciers, the seals, hiked in the silent nature, tried the dog-sledge, got the fresh air and experienced the people and culture of Greenland. I can highly recommend it!

The last week of trip I had book with Disko Line "Cruise and Hotel" for my wife and myself. It started in Ilulissat and ended in Ilulissat after a visit to the Disko Island and to the glaciers at Ice Camp Eqi north of Ilulissat. The duration of the trip was in all 7 nights and 8 days.

The words "Cruise and Hotel" sounds nice, but more precise it is transportation and hotel. We started the tour staying at the Arctic Hotel in Ilulissat. When we arrived there was no welcome or information about the trip we were now starting, no guide, not even a welcome introduction. We had to ask and find out about how to get from the hotel the next day to travel to Disko Island! The hotel was not concerned!

I had an e-mail confirmation of picking up by the hotel upon arrival, but no driver. I had to call the hotel. The hotel wanted to give us two single rooms despite we had a confirmed double room. We finally got it and the room was fine and the food and service afterwards were also satisfactory and I can recommend Arctic Hotel. But not a good beginning!

The "cruise" was the ordinary boat of Disko Line between the towns. That was fine, but not service of any kind, not even a helping hand with luggage. To get the luggage on and off the Disko Line boat was very difficult and very inconvenient. When I complained to a member of the staff on the boat the answer was "this is not Europe, this is Greenland". I am not sure exactly what the staff meant, but for sure he provided no service and was not interested in tourism. The windows of the passenger cabin were very dirty and bad for the lookout during all the trips.

Since the **trip to Disko Island** was with the ordinary Disko Line boat between Ilussiat, Qeqertarsuaq and Aasiaat there was no close sailing to the mouth of the Ilulissat ice fjord with the majestic icebergs, which I had expected. The trip was fine. Upon arrival in Disko Island we were several guests, but there was only one car for transportation to the Disko Hotel, so transfer took long time. It was raining and there was no shed on the harbour, so we got wet. Well, no reason to hurry to the hotel for the room was not ready! The hotel was otherwise fin.

Qeqertarsuaq is a charming small town surrounded by sea and mountains. We went up to Lyngsmarkbræen. It is a 8 km long and a 900 m high accent on the mountains from Qeqertarsuaq. It takes about 3 hours to reach the hut on the top. The walk is of middle level of difficulty with a great view over the town and the bay. On top you can have lunch in the blue hut and try out going by dog-sledge on the glacier. A nice, but overcharged experience.

We went back to Ilulissat and continued with Disko Line to Ice Camp Eqi.
To reach **Ice camp Eqi** from Ilulissat takes about 7 hours by boat through a sea full of icebergs! We were served a very good Greenland lunch with shrimp during the trip. Ice camp Eqi consists of small huts with a view to the Eqi glacier - a living glacier. The huts are comfortable, the view very good and the food fin. The young staff was helpful, friendly and informative. The nature around the huts is mountains where diffirent hikes are possible. Some are, hovewer, slightly difficult with crossing af small rivers and walking up the hill. Ice camp Eqi is a great place to visit and experience Greenland.

We had a fantastic trip but with improvements on the point I have mentioned it would have been even better!

If you consider to go to Ilulissat, you should take your time to go Disko Island. We took a boat (Disko Line is the company) from Ilulissat to Godhavn. It is worth going there. You will see tons of Ice bergs on the trip, and there is a high chance that you will se whales as well. Disko Island itself is a volcanic Island (the youngest in Greenland), has wonderful mountains. Some of the nature is breathtaking. Higly recommended!

Phantastic island and worth spending some time. Excellent fishing place for cod. There are only 2 villages on the island, one is Qequertarsuaq and worth a visit. There are several nice walking tours

What a fantastic place! It is the most magnificent area to whale watch. There were so many whales on the bay in July. The weather was very warm, around 15-16 degrees and the sun never set, so you could see whales at anytime during the 24 hours. walking around you can see really big icebergs in the bay and on the beach ( although you will need a midge net in the summer, on the beach), but not elsewhere. It is a wonderfully compact little village and people are very friendly and stop to speak to you

I was surprised at the alpine terrain. Was expecting more of the coastal with icebergs - which it does have in spades. Highly recommend walking the coastal routes and watching the icebergs turn and the humpback whales feed and play. Glorious few hours watching this on Disko.

The hike to the lookout point south of town is a challenge but managed and I'm 73. The hike to the north had a lot of meltponds and packed snow. Couldn't get to the waterfall. Watch out for sledge dogs if you walk out to the black sand beach.

A quaint little town to wander around. We climbed a staircase to get a better overall view and discovered a little cafe at the top - only noticeable because of the large flags outside. The Innuit lady inside recited poetry and sang in her own language then gave a rough translation. Very moving. She hated the long nights of winter. Supermarkets were open even on Sunday.

As a base for experienced hikers to make multi-day trips, or for nature lovers, this area really delivered.

We were part of a 21 person 'guided' trip to the snow 800m above the village, where we ate and rode dog sleds together. The weather can change very fast here so be prepared - take wet/warm gear plus sun screen!

Stunning experience on the snow above the clouds X
