Great site, best experienced with a guide

Ingapirca is the largest site of Inca ruins in Ecuador. Easily accessible from Cuenca. I suggest a guide as the interpretation tables on site only give you a very basic overview.

These were my first Inca ruins so I can’t compare. It is a small site but worth the experience.

Take the hike into the village to see Inca Face and other artefacts discovered.

We had a great time, especially because we stayed in the possada nearby and could walk to the ruins. It was very interesting and special, because the ruins of the Canar people were older and the Inca's had build over them and used them. The most special builing is the oval form building, unique in South America.

Fascinating archaeological site

Located about 2 hours north of Cuenca, Ecuador, Ingapirca is a gem. This was an Inca outpost, or waystation that includes a Temple of the Sun. It was built on the location of a Canari complex. The Canari people predated the Inca in this area, and continue to thrive there today.

The site is compact and well documented. The $2 entrance fee provides you with a guided tour. In fact, visitors don’t enter without a guide. First stop on the tour is the small, well organized museum which explains burials and displays locally found artifacts.

It was closed and we could just see it from far

We could not find the information in the internet that the site is closed due to corona. So we extra stayed in El Tambo for one night to visit Ingapirca. The good thing was that we saw the ruins from outside the site and we could walk around a little.

Get the feel of what Inca life was before !

Tough the double bus ride from Cuenca via Azogues to Ingapirca is long and tiring, yet extremely budget friendly, please I beg you , do not skip on this.

The entrance to the complex was only 2 USD pp. and came with a very knowledgeable guide. This is the largest Inca site in Ecuador, with gorgeous views. You've got to feel this place. Pictures won't do.

The bus back to Cuenca is a direct one.

Incapurca closed without notice. Who's in charge of this information? Where's the management of the site? When a tourist has a few days to see Ecuador's wonders, don't waste precious time on the drive to a closed Attraction.

If you enjoy the history of the Incas, seeing the ruins located in Ecuador is worth your time. No, it's not Machu Picchu, but it is fantastic in its own right. We chose a tour guide, Herman Flores, that we had for a Cuenca walking tour and a tour of Gualacea and Chorteleg on a previous visit, as he is well-versed in the history of his native Cuenca and many other tourist sites.

Upon arrival, the sun went away and the ruins were shrouded in fog, which added to the mystery of the place. We were greeted by llamas at the start of the tour. We visited all parts of the complex and enjoyed Herman's historical review. At the conclusion of the visit to the temple, he took us on a short walk to see the face of an Inca embedded in rock at the foot of a trail.

The trip was worthwhile and a pleasure to visit. Don't miss out! There is a charge for the entry to the complex.

A worthy excursion from Cuenca for the day.

Bus leaves at 09.00 from Terminal Terrestre, Cuenca to Ingapirca returning at 13.30 for $7. It is a busy bus with people getting on and off all the way so best to avoid seat no’s 3 & 4 near the door.
Archeological site entry a very reasonable $2 and a tour guide in English was included. Our guide was very knowledgeable and interested in his subject.
A short walk away is the natural rock carving of an Indian face on a cliff side well worth the extra effort.

Ingapirca Ruins are worth a visit

We opted to not take a tour but took a bus from the Terestierre Terminal. The bus leaves about 9 am and a round trip ticket is $7. The bus starts the return journey about 1:30. The entranc fee is $2 and includes a guide. It is very interesting and the history is complex. The ruins are superb. The scenery is beautiful. There are many women wearing traditional clothing. At the park entrance is a little museum and several touristy type shops and a few places to eat. We brought our own snacks and ate while waiting for the return bus because we weren't sure how easy it would be to find a place to eat.
