Interesting way to travel!
Nov 2020
Yubu Island is separate from Iriomote Island by a narrow, shallow strait. Water buffalo pull carts across the strait carrying visitors over to the island for a visit. The water buffalo are amazing creatures, quite strong. The cart driver provides a short serenade with a sanshin (it seems everyone in Okinawa knows how to play the sanshin, maybe like the ukulele in Haraii...). The carts are perhaps a bit more crowded than they need to be and passengers sit on benches facing toward the middle of the cart, making the crossing a sensory experience more than a visual one. Still, a very interesting way to travel.

Beautiful Island and landscape across Iriomote
Jul 2019 • Family
Yubu Island is quite famous for day excursion from Ishigaki though we stayed at Iriomote itself and had an interesting trip here. You can buy the tickets at entrance and take the buffalo ride to/back from the island. Their are about 50 buffaloes presently on the Islan, interesting thing is all come from same line and their family tree is pasted in the souvenir shop. The man riding the buffalo cart plays Japanese guitar and sings folk songs which I think is the highlight of the trip. Their is a beach on other end of the island, though it's not for snorkeling or swimming. Fresh pineapple are available in abundance and loved the milk ice cream which is available at entrance.

Interesting trip to a tiny island across from Iriomote Island
May 2019 • Couples
We thought the buffalo cart ride was really fun. The driver of the cart told stories of this particular buffalo which include his/her name and age. Once we got to Yubujima, we got to see the family tree and genealogy of the buffalos. It's worth visiting and trying this buffalo cart tour!

Quite unique
Apr 2019 • Couples
The buffaloes were working overtime to ferry the horde of tourists across a 400m stretch of shallow water. I like the ride, reminds me of the dirty buffalo water carts in Singapore chinatown back in the old days but in a more controlled environment. Some of the buffaloes are so young and small but the handlers know better to have a small cargo load for them. The whole ride took 20mins. We spent 20+mins walking around Yubu Island which is very small and artificial to start with. As with animals, the buffaloes are not consistent - the first Buffalo we took decided to take a dump during the ride. The second Buffalo was so tired, we were overtaken by 3 other carts and it went right to the end of the beach!

Poor Buffaloes

I reluctantly took this cart to Yubujima even though you can walk across easily...some good photo opts but you end up looking through water buffalo souvenirs more than any actual sights...

Tourist trap that's worth the experience
Oct 2016 • Friends
This is probably the most famous water buffalo cart tour available in the Okinawan islands as you cross in a low enough tide from one island to another. The water buffalo pulls a cart that is better described as a covered wagon. There is a guide/buffalo handler. The guide also has to be on bathroom duty for the buffalo and there may be several bathroom breaks. The guide will also play sanshin and sing. Unlike Taketomi's water buffalo cart, the handlers for Yubu-jima hide the fact that the buffalo have to use the bathroom. Whenever the buffalo stops, he will flip a small piece of wood that I don't know how to describe better, thus blocking the riders' view. Not sure why as it's perfectly natural. Once you arrive on Yubu-jima, it's the tourist trap. You get lei-d, there's a sad little butterfly area, a restaurant/shop, and you can walk around. Spending time at the beach is nice but there's really not that much to occupy your time. Then you return back and can say you've done it.

Something to do once
Nov 2016 • Couples
Taking the short water buffalo cart ide from Iriomote across the way to Yubu Island is maybe something to do once. It's certainly a different experience. On the way to the Yubu, there was a lot of exposed sand and very little water. A little over an hour later, the water had risen about 1/2 meter. The cart driver played the local stringed instrument and sang on the return.
