Amazing sand and warm water
Dec 2020 • Solo
I came on an overcast day in December and I was still able to swim. Not many people so I had the beach to myself. The sand is soft. But don’t leave any food exposed or those pesky crows will help themselves to it!

Beautiful beach marred by litter and a sugar factory
Dec 2019 • Family

Nishihama beach and star gazing were the main reasons for our planned overnight stay at Hateruma in early December. But on that day, the ferries were cancelled due to bad weather. So we did a day trip a couple of days later instead. You can easily walk for about 10-15 minutes from the ferry terminal at Hateruma to the beach. The multiple shades of blue, green and turquoise of the ocean and sky were breathtaking. At the breakwaters, you could be about 50m out and the waters are still shallow and clear. We dipped in the water, which was actually not that cold if you submerge deeper. There is a simple public toilet and shower where you can rinse off. (On hindsight we might have walked too far away to the breakwaters and missed seeing the corals and fishes nearer the toilets.) All in all, the beach is beautiful during good weather. But there was a fair amount of litter swept in at the shore and a beach clean up is needed. The rest of the island does not seem to have a garbage disposal system and would also do well with a clean up. A sugar factory right next to the beach also mars the beautiful nature.

Apart from Nishi beach, the island is really very quiet (there were more goats than humans), and in the vicinity of the beach and ferry terminal, we did not see any restaurants or cafes that were open when we were there. So best to bring your own food and beverages. Half of us got quite sea-sick on the 90-minutes ferry, so be prepared for that. (There are toilets on the ferry but you cannot access the open decks.) Ferries leave Ishigaki at 8.00, 11.50 & 14.30 hrs. The operators of the ferry would not accept any advance bookings and you need to check in half an hour before the ferry time to see if it is operating.

We enjoyed ourselves but given the time, money (7220Y / pax for a return ferry from Ishigaki), good weather, flexibility in schedule, endurance against seasickness needed to access Nishi beach, we are unlikely to return.

A great beach
May 2019
This beach on Hateruma island has great colors. It stretches for about two kilometers, and is never crowded. There are no facilities for aeting or drinking, and very few places to find shade. However, it is spectacular.

Not worth the trip
Feb 2019 • Family
The beach is near a sugar factory just walking distance from the port and quite a long way from Ishigaki and nothing around (only a lovely lady selling beers). Although the colour of the water was amazing I would just say it might not be worth the trip if you only have a couple of days to spend around the islands.

This beach is simply outstanding in every single way. Breathtaking beauty, incredible colors, warm water, fine sand, everything here is heavenly.

From Ishigaki it will cost around 7000 yen for the round trip via fast ferry so, while the ride is quite enjoyable in itself, coming here as a day trip is quite expensive. I can tell that this beach is the most beautiful that I have seen in Yaeyama, beating the ones in Taketomi and Ishigaki, but if short on budget you might want to go to one of those to save some money.

The beach is easily reachable from the Hateruma port by a 15 to 20 minutes walk. Be careful that the ferries from Ishigaki and back are few. So plan ahead your schedule.

Beautiful!!!!

It was the most beautiful ocean I had ever seen. It is a little far from Okinawa island and we had to use plane to go, but it is worthwhile to visit there. It had been chosen "japan's most beautiful sea'" In addition to that, at night the stars were very nice. I went with my family, and I lost track ot time.

Absolutely beautiful, full with fish even in shallow water
May 2017 • Couples
Best beach I have been to in Okinawa so far.
White sand, clear water like in many other places but what was surpsising is the amount and variety of fish you could see even a few meters in.
Facilities are minimal though. Hot and humid shower room, filled with sand is the only option to change clothes. Going from the beach to the village is an exhasuting climb if you are with a bike.

breathtaking beach. snorkeling was great, water was perfect and coral reef was pretty close to shore so you don't have to swim far to see marine life. short bike ride from the ferry. watch out for the birds and shut your bags tight because they will rummage through your stuff... i accidentally left my backpack open and they ripped up a bag of chips. rarrrr
