When we want to go the beach, this is where we head.
The reason? This is simply the best one can conveniently reach from Barcelona.
Just hop on the commuter train (R1) towards Mataro, Calella, Blanes etc and relax 20-30 minutes. Get off the train at Ocata, and you're already on the beach.
• It has slightly coarse sant (i.e. not too fine). That's perfect for me!
• There's lots of space: appr. 2500 meters long and 200-250 meters wide!
• You can't rent any umbrellas, nor recliners. Bring a piece of cloth. (Or buy from one of the guys who are constantly waling the beach, offering those.)
• There are just a few playground items, which tend to be situated relatively far from the sea shore.
• There are lifeguards on duty 10-19hrs daily (2015)
• Normally, the water is perfectly clear. Depending on wind direction, there may be some small debris in the water. (Pieces of paper, etc.)
• There are several beach bars (chiringuitos) on the beach, as well as showers and WC:s.
• There's a small naturist area about 20 minutes walk further along the beach from the station. But less sand and more rocks.
Stations in Barcelona with R1:
Hospitalet, Barcelona Sants, Pl Catalunya, Arc de Triumf, Clot-Arago, Sant Adria
NOTE: Ocata is in the second tariff zone. You should use a T-10 travel card for 2 (TWO!) zones. (If you don't, you may end up in trouble when your ticked is being validated upon exit from the destination station!)
Useful tip:
Before heading here, check whether the lifeguards have posted red, yellow or green flag. Visit the site of the Spanish Red Cross to find this info:
http://www.cruzroja.es/appjv/consultaplayas/consultaInicio.do
Enter “Ocata” in the field Playa and hit “Buscar” (search), in the result list hit the button “Ver” (View). (Today it's the yellow flag - probably slightly large waves, so I'll go for a walk instead.)

Ocata Playa (beach) is a fantastic, sandy beach about 20 minutes by train from downtown Barcelona. The water was perfectly clear and the perfect temperature in mid August.
There are only 2 reasons why I hesitated to give the beach 5 stars:
1- it was a bit more crowded than I had hoped. It is a very wide and very long beach so there was still plenty of room to spread out but not close to the water's edge.
2- the waves / current break within 10 feet of the shore and might be a bit strong for a family with young children. We have a four year old that has been going to the ocean since she could walk but I had to keep a hand on her at Ocata.
We still had a fantastic time but I like to do a full disclosure when reviewing something like a beach.

Take the R5 train from Barcelona and get off at Ocata. The beach is steps from the platform. Lots of restaurants on the beach and nearby on the Main Street. The beach was busy but not near as crowded as in the city. Water was nice for swimming except for occasional floating debris but you'll find that anywhere. Tip, it can get really hot, bring a beach umbrella because there's no shade!

We took a train out to Ocata Beach on Sunday from Barcelona. Despite getting on the wrong train we checked out Premia del Mar first and decided that Ocata beach was the better of the two. Very peaceful in comparison to the beaches in the vicinity of Barcelonetta and Port Olimpic The added bonus was that there was a non-TripAdvisor listed restaurant El Restaurant at Club Nautica El Masnou which served a delicious paella as a very reasonable price.

Single, with friends, in family with kids. Some bars, drink, soft drinks, tapas, terrasse, shower possibilities. Restaurants on the harbour premises, free walk access. Restaurants in the main street near the townhall, too. Not to many pkay possibilities for young kids. You enter in the water quickly. Enjoy the day, protect you against the sun in sommer. Take your own umbrella with you.

Ocata beach is located approximately 10 miles north of Barcelona and is easily accessed by train. The beach has far fewer people than at Barceloneta, and there are fewer interruptions from beach vendors. We traveled as a couple but met up with family, so there were 3 generations of us there. The beach is busy at times immediately by the sea, but behind that there is always plenty of space. We played football and volleyball, and generally had fun without worrying that we were being a nuisance to others. We used the beach adjacent to the train station where there are two beach bars serving food and drink at reasonable prices. There are plenty of other eateries and shops along the sea front, which is separated from the beach by the coast road and railway. Don't let this put you off as there are crossings and underpasses. We stayed in Masnou so the decision was easy for us, but when if you're staying in Barcelona the trip is well worth it.

According to other recommendations the beach is quite big, the sand of a good quality, a lot of small places to eat and drink around and possibilities for sport activities like football and volleyball. Unfortunately the water was quite dirty today (thursday, 18th of july). Besides leafs and wood in all sizes, which is fine in water, there were actually two dead rats and pieces of excrements floating when we went in the water once (not again after that experience). Overall there was a really bad smell at the small dried out rivers leading from the city to the sea, maybe the sewers were emptied in the night...

Wide and soft sand beach that seems to go on forever. There are playgrounds and soccer goals setup throughout as well, making it even more fun for the family. We stayed in an apartment here and took the train into Barcelona for day trips. 30 minute train ride from Ocata station. Beach was a wonderful way to start the day with the kids as Spain was still waking up. Lots of sea glass on this beach too.

We stayed in El Masnou in August with our kids and really loved this beach - clean clear water, beautiful sand, no rocks in the water, and great beach bars for lunch or dinner. Lively enough for a bit of atmosphere but not crowded at all.

We stayed in the centre of Barcelona however found that this beach was the best around. Just under 30 minutes of train journey from Catalunya station, it's in zone two so be sure you have the right travel ticket! Towards Ocata beach, try finding a seat by the right side (thats the coast side) so that you see the beautiful views of Spain. You'll need to catch the R1 to Blanes (coming every hour).
Very clean beach and not all too crowded, great location in terms of transport (Ocata station is right outside the beach).

Does anyone know if theirs parking at Ocata station? And if so do we need to pay? We’re staying by El Mansau but that station is closed for a while so we’ve been told to us Ocata, we’ll have a car for our trip so thinking we’ll park at the station if it’s possible

You can take the R metro train to Ocata station from central Barcelona, the station is right on the beach.
